A mathematical model was costructed ad aalyzed by Pematle [J. Theoret. Probab. 2 (1989) 37 49] who showed that the mixig time with respect to variatio distace is at least of order 2 ad at most of order 2 log. I this paper we use a extesio of a lemma of Wilso [A. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) ] to establish a lower boud of order 2 log, thereby showig that 2 log is ideed the correct order of the mixig time. It is our hope that the extesio of Wilso s lemma will prove useful also i other situatios; it is demostrated how it may be used to give a simplified proof of the Θ( 3 log ) lower boud of Wilso [Electro. Comm. Probab. 8 (2003) 77 85] for the Rudvalis shuffle. 1. Itroductio. The distributio of ay aperiodic irreducible Markov chai approaches the uique statioary distributio as the umber of steps icreases, but how may steps are eeded to get sufficietly close? This questio has attracted much attetio over the last two decades or so. Oe importat reaso for this is that computer developmet has allowed the developmet of powerful Markov chai Mote Carlo techiques for simulatio. Particular iterest has bee paid to the case whe the state space is the symmetric group i which case oe ofte refers to the Markov chai as a card shufflig chai. A great variety of differet card shufflig chais have bee studied. Amog these are may simplified versios of real shuffles like the top to radom shuffle, the trasposig eighbors shuffle ad the radom traspositios shuffle, but also models for shuffles that people actually use for shufflig a deck of cards; the riffle shuffle ad the overhad shuffle. The riffle shuffle (or the Gilbert Shao Reeds shuffle) is a model for the most frequetly used shufflig method. 2 2 J. JONASSON for a deck of cards is give by 3 2 log 2. Later Bayer ad Diacois [2] i a celebrated paper exteded this to a very sharp result which, amog other thigs, established that oe eeds about seve shuffles to mix a ordiary deck with 52 cards. The overhad shuffle, the topic of the preset paper, is the shufflig techique where you gradually trasfer the deck from, say, your right had to you left had by slidig off small packets from the top of the deck. Pematle [5] itroduced ad aalyzed a probabilistic model for the overhad shuffle ad established upper ad lower bouds of order 2 log ad 2, respectively, for the mixig time o a deck of cards. Here we will establish a lower boud of order 2 log, thereby provig Pematle s upper boud to be essetially tight. The mai tool of our aalysis is a techique itroduced by Wilso [7] where oe cleverly uses a eigevalue close to 1 ad a correspodig eigevector of the trasitio matrix of the motio of a sigle card i order to fid a useful eigevector of the whole chai. This eigevector exhibits a certai cotractio property ad the radom variable obtaied by evaluatig it at the state at time t ca ofte be proved to be close to its expectatio with high probability. I [7] this techique is used to prove a order 3 log lower boud for the trasposig eighbors shuffle ad i [6] a versio for a lifted Markov chai is used to establish a lower boud of the same order for the Rudvalis shuffle. Mossel, Peres ad Siclair [4] use the techique to prove a log lower boud for the so called cyclic to radom shuffle. I Sectio 2 we review some basic defiitios ad describe Pematle s model for the overhad shuffle ad Wilso s techique. I Sectio 3 we state ad prove the promised lower boud for the overhad shuffle. I order to do this, we will have to exted Wilso s techique slightly ad use a vector that is ot really but oly very close to a eigevector of the trasitio matrix. We hope that this extesio turs out to be useful i other situatios as well. I Sectio 4 we demostrate how it ca be used to give a simplified proof of Wilso s [6] Ω( 3 log) lower boud for the Rudvalis shuffle. 2. Prelimiaries Basic defiitios. The stadard way of measurig the distace betwee two probability measures µ ad ν o a fiite set S is by the total variatio orm defied by µ ν = 1 2 s S µ(s) ν(s) = max(µ(a) ν(a)). A S Let {X t } t=0, = 1,2,3,..., be a sequece of aperiodic irreducible Markov chais o state spaces S ad with statioary distributios π. Assume that
OVERHAND SHUFFLE 3 S i a atural way. A sequece {f()} =1 is said to be a upper boud for the mixig time of the sequece of Markov chais if ad a lower boud if lim P(X f() ) π = 0 lim P(X f() ) πm = 1. Whe, for ay a > 0, (1 a)f() is a lower boud ad (1 + a)f() is a upper boud, oe says that f() is a cutoff or a threshold for the mixig time. I card shufflig situatios, as i the preset paper, S = S, the set of permutatios of cards, ad usually π is U = U, the uiform distributio o S The overhad shuffle. Pematle s model for the overhad shuffle is parameterized by a probability p (0, 1). The trasitio rule is the followig: Each of the 1 slots betwee adjacet cards is, idepedetly of the other slots, declared a cutpoit with probability p. This divides i a atural way the deck ito subsequeces, or packets, of cards. Reverse each of these packets without chagig its positio relative to the other packets. (This is ot what really happes whe doig a overhad shuffle; what we get is rather the reversed deck compared to what oe would have got from the overhad shuffle. This of course does ot matter for the mixig time.) For this Markov chai, Pematle obtaied a O( 2 log) upper boud by costructig a couplig for which he was able to demostrate that oe ca fid a costat C < such that each card is with high probability matched withi C 2 log steps. Ituitively, oe ca uderstad this by observig that a particular card makes a radom walk which is essetially symmetric [at least whe the card is ot at O(1) distace from the eds of the deck] with step size variace of costat order. Therefore, oe should be able to match the typical card withi O( 2 ) steps ad all cards withi O( 2 log) steps. Studyig the radom walks of sigle cards also quickly yields a Ω( 2 ) lower boud sice before this time too may of the cards are too close to their startig positios Wilso s techique. The key to the techique is the followig lemma from [7]. Later o, a extesio of the lemma will be eeded together with correspodig adjustmets of its proof. We prove the origial lemma here i order to make the later proof of the extesio easier to digest; doig both at oce may hide the essetial ideas behid techical details. Lemma 2.1 (The lower boud lemma). Let {X t } t=0 be a aperiodic irreducible Markov chai with state space S ad statioary distributio π.
4 J. JONASSON Assume that Φ:S R ad γ (0, 1 2 ) are such that E[Φ(X t+1 ) X t ] = (1 γ)φ(x t ). (I.e., 1 γ is a eigevalue for the trasitio matrix ad Φ is a correspodig eigevector.) Suppose that R max s S E[(Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t )) 2 X t = s], put ˆΦ = maxs S Φ(s) ad let the chai start from a state s 0 such that Φ(s 0 ) = ˆΦ. Fix ε > 0 ad put The for t T, T = log ˆΦ (1/2)log(4R/(γε)). log(1 γ) P(X t ) π 1 ε. The lemma may be adopted to situatios with complex-valued eigevalues ad eigevectors as well, but we will ot eed that here; the overhad shuffle clearly defies a reversible Markov chai. Proof of Lemma 3.2. By iductio, EΦ(X t ) = (1 γ) t Φ(s 0 ) ad, cosequetly, EΦ(X ) = 0. Put Φ = Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t ). The E[Φ(X t+1 ) 2 X t ] = (1 2γ)Φ(X t ) 2 + E[( Φ) 2 X t ] (1 2γ)Φ(X t ) 2 + R. Usig iductio ad that γ 1/2, we get Thus, sice γ 1/2, E[Φ(X t ) 2 ] (1 2γ) t Φ(s 0 ) 2 + R 2γ. VarΦ(X t ) Φ(s 0 ) 2 ((1 2γ) t (1 γ) 2t ) + R 2γ R 2γ. By Chebyshev s iequality, ( P Φ(X t ) EΦ(X t ) ) R ε γε 2 ad by lettig t, it also follows that ( ) R P Φ(X ) ε γε 2. Now if t is such that EΦ(X t ) 2 R/(γε), the we get that P(Φ(X t ) R/(γε)) ε/2 ad so P(X t ) P(X ) 1 ε,
OVERHAND SHUFFLE 5 as desired. It remais to determie for which t we have EΦ(X t ) = (1 γ) t ˆΦ 2 R/(γε). Some simple algebraic maipulatios show that this is the case whe t T. There is more to usig the lower boud lemma tha just the lemma itself: I order to derive good lower bouds, oe eeds to fid a eigevalue sufficietly close to 1 ad a useful correspodig eigevector. It is ot at all obvious how to do that. I [7], ad also i [6] ad [4], oe may fid some useful hits o how this may be doe. 3. Lower boud for the overhad shuffle. Let X t deote the state of the deck at time t ad let Z t = Zt i deote the positio of card i at time t. For simplicity, we shall do the the case p = 1/2 ad leave the straightforward geeralizatio to the reader. To further simplify our calculatios, we will to begi with assumig a circular deck covetio, that is, regardig the top card ad the bottom card as beig ext to each other. This meas that the top packet ad the bottom packet may be treated as a sigle packet (if the slot betwee that top ad the bottom card happes to be a cutpoit). The ay sigle card performs a symmetric radom walk where the probability that the card moves k steps to the right (modulo ) at a sigle shuffle is 1 3 (1 2 ) k, k Z. (A egative k, of course, meas that the card moves to the left. The give step size distributios, ot etirely correct because of the remote possibility that, at a give shuffle, there are o cutpoits at all or oly oe cutpoit. However, the probability that this ever happes i the time scale we are iterested i is so small that we do ot eed to care about this. If we wat to make the formula completely correct, we may just redefie the shuffle o this evet i a suitable way.) We start with the circular deck covetio sice it produces a much cleaer proof tha the real overhad shuffle. At the ed of this sectio the circular covetio will be removed via a slight extesio of the lower boud lemma. To fid a eigevector for the {Z t }-chai, we use the cosie fuctio [ote that cos(2πk/) is well defied o Z ]: [ E cos 2πZ ] t+1 X t = 1 3 cos 2πZ t k=1 = 1 ( cos 2πZ ) ( t k=1 ( 1 2 k cos 2π(Z t k) ) cos(2πk/) 2 k + cos 2π(Z ) t + k) = (1 γ)cos 2πZ t, where γ = (1 + o(1))8π 2 2, which follows from the fact that, for k = o(), oe has cos(2πk/) = 1 2π 2 k O(k 4 4 ), ad that k=1 k 2 2 k = 6.
6 J. JONASSON The secod equality follows from the stadard trigoometric formula for the cosie of a sum. Now put m = /2 ad Φ(X t ) = m i=1 cos 2πZi t. The Φ is a eigevector correspodig to the eigevalue 1 γ for the trasitio matrix of the whole deck, ad ˆΦ = C for C = Θ(1). I order to use the lower boud lemma, we eed to boud E[(Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t )) 2 X t ]. Write Y i = cos 2πZi t+1 cos 2πZi t. The [( m ) E[(Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t )) 2 2 ] Xt m m X t ] = E Y i = E[Y i Y j X t ]. i=1 i=1 j=1 Let A deote the evet that o two cutpoits of the (t + 1)st shuffle are more tha 10log steps apart. It is easily verified that P(A) = 1 o( 5 ). Cosider a give pair (i,j) of cards that at time t are more tha 20log apart. Ideally, if card i ad card j were ifiitely far apart at time t, the Y i ad Y j would have bee idepedet. Put Y i ad Y j for such idealized idepedet radom variables. By the defiitio of A, we ca couple Y i ad Y j with Y i ad Y j i such a way that Y i = Y i ad Y j = Y j o A. (Such a couplig ca be made by couplig the cutpoits for the two cases i a atural way.) Thus, E[Y i Y j X t ] = E[Y i Y j I A X t ] + o( 5 ) = E[Y i X t]e[y j X t] + o( 5 ) = E[Y i X t ]E[Y j X t ] + o( 5 ). By mimickig the above calculatios, it follows that E[Y i X t ] = O( 2 ) ad so Usig this, it follows that E[Y i Y j X t ] = O( 4 ). E[(Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t )) 2 X t ] m = E[Y i Y j X t ] + O( 2 ) i=1 j : Zt i Zj t 20log = m i=1 j : Z i t Zj t 20log Cov(Y i,y j X t ) + O( 2 ) 20V log,
where OVERHAND SHUFFLE 7 V = max s S Var(Y i X t = s) max s S E[Y 2 i X t = s] = 8 3 k=1 for large eough. Hece, si 2 2πk/ 2 k E[(Φ(X t+1 ) Φ(X t )) 2 X t ] log ad we may apply the lower boud lemma with R = log. I order to have ε 0, let ε = (log) 1. The lower boud lemma ow yields the lower boud T = (1 + o(1)) 2 8π 2 (log(c) 1 = (1 + o(1)) 16π 2 2 log. ) (log )2 log 8π 2 Fially, for geeral p, the aalogous calculatios usig that k=1 j 2 (1 p) j = (2 p)(1 p)/p 3 give the followig: Theorem 3.1. A lower boud for the overhad shuffle with circular deck covetio ad with parameter p (0,1) is give by p 2 (2 p) 8π 2 (1 p 2 ) 2 log. Next we remove the circular deck covetio. We will agai cocetrate o the case p = 1/2. The vector Φ above is ow o loger really a eigevector for {X t }, but oly very close to oe; i particular, the cards ear the eds of the deck do ot behave well. However, the feelig is that the small error we make if we still assume that Φ is a eigevector should ot be large eough to upset thigs too much. This is made precise by the followig extesio of the lower boud lemma: Lemma 3.2 (The exteded lower boud lemma). Let the settig be as i the lower boud lemma with the exceptio that Φ is ot a eigevector for the trasitio matrix, but there is a positive umber ρ such that (1 γ)φ(x t ) ρ E[Φ(X t+1 ) X t ] (1 γ)φ(x t ) + ρ a.s. The, for t T, P(X T ) π 1 ε, where T = log ˆΦ log(2ρ/γ + 4(R + 6ρˆΦ)/(γε)). log(1 γ)
8 J. JONASSON Proof. The proof is basically a repetitio of the proof of the lower boud lemma, with the proper adjustmets: By iductio, we get (1 γ) t Φ(s 0 ) ρ γ EΦ(X t) (1 γ) t Φ(s 0 ) + ρ γ, that is, for some α [ 1,1], ad by lettig t, we also get We have By iductio, Thus, EΦ(X t ) = (1 γ) t Φ(s 0 ) αρ γ ρ γ EΦ(X ) ρ γ. E[Φ(X t ) 2 X t ] Φ(X t ) 2 + 2Φ(X t )E[ Φ X t ] + R (1 2γ)Φ(X t ) 2 + 2ρ Φ(X t ) + R (1 2γ)Φ(X t ) 2 + 2ρˆΦ + R. E[Φ(X t ) 2 ] (1 2γ) t Φ(s 0 ) 2 + R + 2ρˆΦ. 2γ VarΦ(X t ) (1 2γ) t Φ(s 0 ) 2 + R + 2ρˆΦ 2γ R + 2ρˆΦ 2γ By Chebyshev s iequality, ( P + 2 α ρˆφ(1 γ) t γ Φ(X t ) EΦ(X t ) ( (1 γ) t Φ(s 0 ) αρ γ R + 6ρˆΦ. 2γ ) R + 6ρˆΦ ε γε 2 ad by lettig t, usig that EΦ(X ) ρ/γ, P ( Φ(X ) ργ ) + R + 6ρˆΦ ε γε 2. Thus, P(X t ) π 1 ε whe t is such that EΦ(X t ) ρ/γ + 2 (R + 6ρˆΦ)/(γε). Sice EΦ(X t ) (1 γ) tˆφ ρ/γ, this holds whe t T. ) 2
OVERHAND SHUFFLE 9 I our case γ = Θ( 2 ), R = O( 1 log) (the above argumets apply equally well to the preset settig without the circular deck covetio) ad ˆΦ = O(). Hece, oce it has bee show that ρ = O( 2+δ ) for ay δ > 0, the we get the same lower boud that we got with the circular deck covetio. I fact, with some care it ca be show that ρ = O( 2 ), but thigs get cosiderably easier if we settle for provig that ρ = O( 2 (log) 3 ). As above, the probability that i a give shuffle the positio of the first cutpoit is larger tha 10log or that the positio of the last cutpoit is less tha 10log is o( 5 ). Therefore, whe X t is such that a give card is i a positio Z t = k with 10log < k < 10log, the movemet of that card ca be coupled with the movemet of a card uder the circular deck covetio so that the two movemets coicide with probability 1 o( 5 ). Thus, [ E cos 2πZ t+1 ] X t = (1 γ)cos 2πZ t + o( 5 ). Now assume that k 10log (the case k 10log is treated i the same way). The cos 2πk ( (log ) 2) = 1 O 2. Sice P( Z t+1 Z t 2log 2 ) 2, we get [ E cos 2πZ ] t+1 X t (1 1 ) 2 cos 2π(k + 2log 2 ) 1 2 ( (log ) 2) = 1 O Sice 2 = (1 γ)cos 2πZ ( t (log ) 2) + O 2. /2 Φ(X t ) = cos 2πZi t, it follows o summatio that ( (log) 2 ) E[Φ(X t+1 ) X t ] = (1 γ)φ(x t ) + 20log O + 2 o( 5 ) i=1 ( (log ) 3) = (1 γ)φ(x t ) + O ad so ρ = O((log ) 3 2 ) as desired. Agai, the case with a geeral p (0,1) is completely aalogous ad we arrive at the followig: 2 2
10 J. JONASSON Theorem 3.3. A lower boud for the overhad shuffle with parameter p (0,1) is give by p 2 (2 p) 8π 2 (1 p 2 ) 2 log. 4. The Rudvalis shuffle. The (iverse) Rudvalis shuffle is described by the followig trasitio rule: With probability 1/2, move the bottom card to the top of the deck ad with probability 1/2, move the card ext to the bottom card to the top of the deck. The model was proposed by Aruas Rudvalis as a shuffle with very slow covergece to uiformity. I [3] it was show that the Rudvalis shuffle mixes i O( 3 log) steps. For a log time the best kow lower boud was Ω( 3 ), util Wilso [6] recetly foud a Ω( 3 log) boud ad thereby established the mixig time as Θ( 3 log). Applyig the lower boud lemma directly to the Rudvalis shuffle is difficult, the reaso beig that the otrivial eigevalues of the chai described by the motio of a sigle card are complex ad deviate from 1 by Ω( 1 ). Wilso gets aroud this problem by liftig the Rudvalis chai to a larger state space by lettig time be a part of this larger state space. He the exteds the lower boud lemma i a way that lets him make coclusios about the mixig time of the Rudvalis chai from the behavior of the lifted chai. Here we shall reprove Wilso s lower boud by applyig our exteded lower boud lemma above to the -step trasitio matrix of the Rudvalis shuffle. More precisely, let X t as before deote the state of the deck at time t ad Zt i the positio of card i at time t. The with γ = (1 + o(1))4π2 2 ad Φ(X t ) = /2 i=1 cos(2πzt/), i the pair (1 γ,φ(x t )) is sufficietly close to a eigevalue/eigevector pair for the chai {X s } s=1 for the exteded lower boud lemma to be ivoked. Due to the fact that we are cotet with fidig a vector which is ot really but oly close eough to a eigevector, we are able to avoid some techical difficulties. For example, we will ot eed to lift the chai ad we will ot have to deal with ay complex algebra whatsoever. Let p k,j deote the probability that a card startig from positio k fids itself i positio j after steps of the Rudvalis shuffle. If k / { 1,}, the the first k 1 steps determiistically take the card to positio 1. From there it takes the card a geometric(1/2) umber G, say, of steps for the card to move to positio 1. After that, provided it happes before all the steps have bee take, the remaiig k +1 G steps determiistically shift the card to positio k + 2 G. We get p k, = ( 1 2 )k+1
ad for j = 1,2,...,k + 1, OVERHAND SHUFFLE 11 p k,j = ( 1 2 )k+2 j. A special treatmet alog the same lies of the case k { 1,} gives ad for j = 2,3,..., 1, p k, = p k,1 = (1 2 ) p k,j = ( 1 2 )+1 j. The aalysis is ow very similar to that of the overhad shuffle above. Suppose X s is such that Z t = Zt i = k for a give card i. Whe k {, 1} or k 10log, cos(2πk/) = 1 O((log ) 2 2 ). Sice P( Z (s+1) Z s 2log 2 ) 2, [ E cos 2πZ (s+1) ] ( (log) 2 ) X s = 1 O 2 ( (log) 2 + O = (1 γ)cos 2πZ s Now assume that k { 10log,..., 2}. The [ E cos 2πZ ] (s+1) X s = = 1 j= k ( 1 j= k 1 2π(k + j) cos j 2 k+2 + o( 5 ). ) 1 2πj cos cos 2πk ( 1 22 j j= k 2 ). ) 1 2πj si si 2πk 22 j The first of the three terms equals (1 γ) cos(2πk/). For the secod term, 1 j= k 1 2πj k si 22 j = 1 2πj si 22+j j= 1 = k j= 1 = 2π ( ) 1 2πj 2 2+j + O( 3 ) j= 1 j 2 2+j + O( 3 ) = O( 3 ), where the last equality follows from the fact that the last sum is 0, which ca, for example, be see by otig that the sum coicides with 2 plus
12 J. JONASSON the expectatio of a geometric(1/2) radom variable. O summig the three terms ad the over the cards 1,2,..., /2, we get ( (log) 3) E[Φ(X (s+1) ) X s ] = (1 γ)φ(x s ) + O. I order to apply the exteded lower boud lemma, we eed to boud E[(Φ(X (s+1) ) Φ(X s )) 2 X s ]. Put The, with m = /2, Ut i = cos 2π(Zi t t). m Φ(X (s+1) ) Φ(X s ) = (U(s+1) i Ui s ) i=1 = m (s+1) i=1 t=s+1 2 (U i t Ui t 1 ) (s+1) m = (Ut i Ut 1). i t=s+1 i=1 Sice the terms for differet t s are cocered with differet shuffles, these are idepedet. Also, sice all cards but at most two are at each shuffle shifted oe step dow the deck, at most two terms of the ier sum ca chage, ad if so, the chage is bouded by 2/. Takig these facts ito accout, we get 4 Var(Φ(X (s+1) ) Φ(X s ) X s ) m 2 2. Addig this to ( ( (E[Φ(X (s+1) ) Φ(X s ) X t ]) 2 (log ) 3)) 2 = γφ(x s ) + O = O( 2 ), we get 2 E[(Φ(X (s+1) ) Φ(X s )) 2 X s ] = O( 1 ). We may thus apply the exteded lower boud lemma with γ = (1+o(1))4π 2 2, R = O( 1 ) ad ρ = O((log) 3 2 ). Doig so, we arrive at the lower boud 1 8π 2 log for {X 2 s } s=1. For the Rudvalis shuffle, this gives the lower boud as desired. 1 8π 23 log,
