3 Bridge Tips By Ken Rexford MORE ON SPLINTER BIDS Ruth is busy dealing with the difficult warm weather in Florida, so I am filling in for her this month. Last month, Ruth introduced the idea of Splinter Bids in response to a One Heart or One Spade opening. This month, we will discuss a second type of Splinter Bid, this time by Opener after Responder bids One Heart or One Spade. There are five auctions that allow for a Splinter Bid after Responder bids One Heart or One Spade: 1 P 1 1 P 1 1 P 1 1 P 1 1 P 1 In all five of these sequences, Opener can make a Splinter Bid, as well. The Splinter Bid in all of these auctions is a jump that forces the four-level in a new suit, showing game-forcing values, a stiff or void in the suit of the jump, and a four-card fit for Responder's major. A three-card fit is acceptable if partner's bid showed a five-card suit. Also, keep in mind that Opener has already bid and therefore shown a suit, is now showing an unbalanced hand, and therefore surely has confirmed that his minor (if he opened a minor) is a real suit. There are ten Splinter auctions possible with this start. Let's walk through them. 1 P 1 3 Opener could clearly have forced game naturally with a Two Spades rebid. Three Spades, instead, shows a stiff or void in spades, four hearts, and about HCP. An example hand: 9 A Q 9 2 A 7 3 A Q J 3 2 Opener can also make a Splinter Bid in the other minor: 1 P 1 4 Opener could have forced naturally with a Two Diamonds rebid. Three Diamonds, whatever the meaning, would surely cover any weird hands. Thus, Four Diamonds, an unnecessary double-jump reverse, shows a stiff or void in spades, four hearts, and about HCP. An example hand: A K Q 9 A Q K Q 3 2 The Splinter Bids after a One Club opening and a One Spade response are easy to remember, as well, because they are both at the four-level and are both double-jump-reverses: Lima DBC Newsletter, February 2014 Page 3
4 1 P P 1 4 When Opener makes a double jump shift, as with after One Diamond openings, these are also Splinters: 1 P P P P 1 4 Finally, after One Heart and a One Spade response: 1 P P 1 4 In all situations, again, Opener shows a hand with enough strength to force game opposite a minimum, with a stiff or void in the indicated suit. Theory, Part VIII By Ken Rexford The Other 2/1 GF Sequence? There are three mainstream methods (if you include our area) for responding to a One Club opening. The classic approach is simple up-the-line. A locally popular approach is the Montreal Relay. Many of you who play 2/1 Game Force may not realize it, but the classic 2/1 GF system also applies after a One Club opening with its own methods. This sequence introduces the concept of "Walsh." "Walsh" is an approach where Responder, after a One Club opening, does not bid "up the line" but instead bypasses a diamond suit, even if it is longer than the major, to immediately bid four-card majors. This is done unless Responder has opening strength, in which case Responder will bid a 5+ diamond suit before a four-card major, planning to reverse into the major later (which will be game forcing). Thus, with: A Q A Responder, if playing Walsh, will respond One Spade to a One Club opening, bypassing the diamond suit. However, with: A Q A K 9 Responder, who has opening strength, would first bid One Diamond, planning later to bid Two Spades to show the four-card spade suit, longer diamonds, and gameforcing values. So far, this seems simple. Bid the major first unless you have longer diamonds and game-forcing values. There is more, however. First, let us analyze the auctions where Responder starts with One Diamond. The auction is One Club, Pass, One Diamond. Opener now need not bid four-card majors himself, unless there is a reason. If there is a four-four fit, Responder will show the major himself. So, with the average balanced hand, Opener will rebid One No Trump, even if he has both four-card majors. This, in a way, has a somewhat backwards version of the benefit of Montreal Relay. With Montreal Relay, Lima DBC Newsletter, February 2014 Page 4
5 Responder's One Diamond denies a five-card major. If Opener has no four-card major and rebids 1NT, Responder's major holdings are not revealed to the defense. With Walsh, if Responder lacks a four-card major, Opener will not reveal his own four-card majors if balanced, which accomplishes somewhat of the same goal. However, the buried information lasts longer, as Opener will become Declarer, while with Montreal Relay Responder's major holdings will be apparent after the lead. This fact does not mean that Opener never bids a fourcard major, however. Opener will rebid a four-card major if he has an unbalanced hand, usually meaning long clubs. Thus, while with: A Q K 9 7 A Opener would rebid 1NT after One Club and a One Diamond response (trusting partner to rebid Two Spades if he has the game-forcing hand with spades and longer diamonds). However, with: A Q K 9 7 A Opener would rebid One Spade. That call shows four spades, which is of somewhat incidental benefit unless Responder has a game-forcing hand. However, it also shows real clubs, which might help us get to a superior Two Clubs contract or a Five Clubs contract. Strangely, because the primary emphasis to the One Spade rebid is on "real clubs," Opener can occasionally take liberties with the reliability of the spade suit, especially if declaring in a Moysian spade fit is a reasonable risk. Consider, for example: A Q 4 7 K A With this hand, a One Spade rebid has a slight risk of ending up in a 4-3 spade fit, but that end contract, if it happens, is not necessarily a bad thing. The benefit to the lie in spades is that the unbalanced nature of the hand is described, as is the true nature of the "real clubs" shown. If Opener bids a major, Responder can complete the pattern, often raising the major as a game-forcing bid. For example, if Opener rebids One Spade, Responder can simply raise to Two Spades to set trumps and force game, leaving a lot of space to explore slam. might start with One Spade, hear 1NT as a rebid, and then want to play in a longer diamond suit that he buried. For example, what if Responder has either: or Q A A Q A With the first hand, Responder wants to play a diamond partial. With the second, the same, but Responder is not opposed to partner thinking about game. So, what does he do? For those who play checkback (ideally two-way), there is a solution. With the hands that just want to invite 3NT, bid Checkback. This does not promise a fifth card in the major you bid. If partner happens to rebid your major, or the other major, then bid 2NT to invite 3NT. If partner has neither, he usually bids Two Diamonds (if Two Clubs was the checkback bid), after which you bid 2NT. If Two Diamonds is your only "checkback" bid, partner will rebid 2NT with a minimum and no major to show but would bid above 2NT with any hand that would accept an invite and that lacks a major to introduce over checkback. This frees up 2NT as artificial. I prefer to use 2NT as a weak relay, sort of like good-bad 2NT. The structure, then: One Club One of a Major 1NT? 2NT is a weak relay Three Clubs invitational with a club fit Three Diamonds invitational with long diamonds After the 2NT relay, Opener almost always bid Three Clubs, which Responder can pass (to play) or correct to Three Diamonds (also to play). Not all 2/1 GF players use the Walsh treatment. So, do not forget to ask partner what she does in this sequence. Walsh bidding has another strange twist often recognized. With non-game-force hands, Responder Lima DBC Newsletter, February 2014 Page 5
