It became apparent in each case that one opponent is guarding the king behind you in a suit in which you have the AQ because that opponent is discarding winners in his/her long suit. Hand #1 West J North A976 J9 KJ4 AQ73 South KQ53 Q5 AQ8 J1064 East 10 AK K95 Iopened 1NT (15-17) with the North hand. East has a legitimate overcall by Mel s Rules a 7 loser hand with 9 cards in his two longest suits but he elected to pass. Ken, following Grant Baze s Rule With HCP, play notrump rather than your 4-4 major fit because it will make as many tricks and score better at match points disdained Stayman and just bid 3NT. I was extremely fortunate to get a 4th-best heart lead. Some people with the East hand would lead a top heart first, to look at Dummy, since they have a possible entry with the K. (Leading 4th-best is usually best with no outside entry because you want to preserve communication with your partner in case s/he wins a trick.) I played low from Dummy. If East has led from the AK, it does not matter what I do, but in case West has the K10x(x) or K9x(x), I want to encourage West to play the 10 or 9, not the K. If I play the Q and West has the K, s/he will always play the K. Playing low gives West a chance to go wrong. West had only the 10, so I won my J and played a low spade to the K. When the 10 fell from East, I continued with the Q, and then finessed West out of his J. East threw away diamonds on the third, fourth, and fifth rounds of spades. I then cashed the top three diamonds, ending on Dummy. East reluctantly parted with one club and then with two hearts (the 3 and 2). It is clear East is guarding the K, so I played the Q. He got his A, K, and 8, and then had to lead from K9 into my AQ. Making 4. Ironically, with our 29 HCP and the 4-1 spade break, there is theoretically no makeable game N/S. However, 4 takes Double Dummy defense to beat it. After taking two top hearts, East will probably switch to a diamond. Declarer cannot pull all for spades because East has hearts to run. After playing the K and Q, Declarer can take the club finesse. A canny East can duck the first club and take the second club at which point East gives partner a club ruff for down 1.

He showed four spades, so I signed off in 3NT. (The points do not add up for 6NT.) The lead was a fourth-best heart. Holding A10 Ken made the correct play of low from Dummy, and East was forced to play his singleton K. Ken correctly reasoned that since West had long hearts, the spade length was more likely to be with East. So, he played his J (in case West was someone who always covers an honor with an honor ) and overtook with Dummy s K. Then he played the 9 from Dummy and let it ride. West showed out, discarding a club. Ken played two more rounds of spades and West discarded a couple of diamonds. Now Ken played four rounds of clubs. West now started discarding hearts the 3, 6, and then 8. Again, it is crystal clear that West is guarding the K. So, Ken cashed the Q and led Dummy s 4 to West s J. Poor West now had to lead from his K10 into Ken s AQ. Ken then announced to me that he had just made the Maritha Play since I had done the same operation on the hand before. (My partners love keeping me entertained.)
