With breathtaking courage, they went after what everyone said they couldn't reach, defying danger, tragedy and death. Join author Laurie Notaro in a presentation of her book, Crossing the Horizon, that documents the true story of Elsie Mackay, Mabel Boll and Ruth Elder a founding member of The Ninety- Nines and their quest to prove that women were just as brave as men in the face of magnificent challenge. Join the Chapter at Aspen Flying Club for a presentation by author Laurie Notaro who will be discussing her new book, Crossing the Horizon. Thank you, Terri Bazacos, for hosting this year's picnic. The weather was perfect and food was so yummy! Members and guests attending were Vanita & Frank Gallo, Terri Bazacos, Vaughn Dowell, Jan Lonsdale, Debbie Bullock, Margot Plummer, Anita Hessin, Babette Andre, Nancy Reinhardt, Lynn Merrill, June Stewart, Gretchen Jahn & Karl Sutterfield and Terri's parents, Dennis & Phyllis Gerfen. Jan Lonsdale, Terri Bazacos and Debbie Bullock The High Plains Chapter participated in the Grand Junction First Annual Aviation Day Event on August 19 th. Judy Allerheiligen reported that it was a huge success, partly due to suggestions from Emily Salley and Amanda Carbonari from our Girls Scout program. Judy used material we suggested for air traffic control, using LiveATC and FlightAware. The adults (and other presenters) were just as impressed as the students. If someone needs to add a last minute entry after August 31, please call Airports: Meadowlake (KFLY American Aviation FBO on NE corner of airport), Limon (KLIC), Centennial (KAPA Denver Jet Center). You must pick up a card at these airports between 9 and A Ninety-Nine will be there to sell/ issue you a card. Note: CHANGE FROM LAST YEAR!! You do NOT have to land at every airport. We hope you do - for the valuable cross-country experience - but if you don t, you may receive the remaining cards to complete your hand at the terminus, Front Range. Terminus: Front Range Airport (KFTG). Marshallers will help with parking in front of terminal. Lunch will be available for purchase in the Aviator Bar and Grill located in the terminal, and is open until 2:30. Prizes will be awarded at 2:30 upstairs in the terminal. You MUST arrive by 2:00. Start: You may start at any of four airports and can go in any order, but end at KFTG by 12:30. Must be at other airports between 9 and 12:30. You can purchase as many hands (cards and score sheets) at any airport for $20 as you like. Cards: One card per hand is drawn at each airport, with the exception of KFTG, where you will draw more cards. A Ninety-Nine will validate card and put it onto your score sheet. If card is a duplicate, you can draw another. You will have 7 cards at the terminus to make your best 5-card hand. Competition: Remember, this is NOT a RACE. Please take your time and be safe. If weather is marginal at one of the airports we may not use it. Call by 8 AM if weather is dicey and you will be given instructions. Scoring: Standard Five Card Draw. No Jokers or Wild cards. Points will be assessed not only for hands, but card values within hands. Your hands will be put onto a score sheet for tallying upon arriving at the terminus. Prizes: Winner will take $100. Additional income goes to the Colorado Scholarship Fund. Also NUMEROUS great prizes to choose from, enough for everyone to get something you get to choose one in order of your score. There will be a pretty cool BOOBY prize too, for whomever comes in last. At each stop: A Ninety-Nine who is there will have: Score sheets Change for purchase of score sheets. Cash only PLEASE. Shoe with cards Stapler and colored markers Chapter Scholarship recipient Caitlin Walton passed her Private Pilot checkride! She was training in Diamond DA-20s in Colorado Springs, when the whole DA-20 fleet was destroyed in a hail storm. So she switched to C172s and trained for about a week before passing her checkride.
