3 Mandrago A Game by Johan Beyens, for 2 to 4 players ages 6 and up. Introduction A great sorrow is inflicted upon the residents of the kingdom, their beloved princess has fallen deadly ill. Only a potion, brewed from the legendary root of the Mandrago, can save her. The king offers a great reward to the adventurer that can present him this mysterious potion, but time is of the essence! Several heroes leave fortwith for the forest, to collect the freshest roots as soon as possible and be the first to return to the king. During their journey through the forest, the heroes also encounter allies, that join them and aid them during their quest. Goal Players score points with the Mandrago Roots and Allies they collect. The game ends when a player scores a certain amount of points at the start of his turn. The number of points needed to win, depends on the number of players : 2 players: 15 points 3 players: 13 points 4 players: 11 points Furthermore, if a player succeeds to start his turn with Mandrago Roots of all six colors in his collection, he also wins the game. Components This game contains : Rulebook 40 tiles (18 Mandrago Roots, 6 Goblins, 6 Faeries, 2 Wizards, 2 Knights, 2 Witches, 2 Dragons, 2 Satyrs) 5 Eye Tokens 4 Combat Tokens Knight Combat Token Dragon Combat Token Eye Token

4 Game Setup Shuffle all the tiles and place them randomly in 5 rows of 8 tiles. Make sure the tiles are orderly placed, but leave some space between them so players can easily pick them up. All tiles are placed face-down. The area that these tiles make up, is called The Forest. Put the 5 Eye Tokens and 4 Combat Tokens next to The Forest, in reach for all players. Game Sequence The youngest player gets to play first. After that, the player to his left gets to play his turn, and so on, continuing clockwise. In your turn, you must take 4 actions in the following order : 1) Count the number of points you collected and tell the other players your score. 2) Collect a tile from The Forest : Take 1 tile from The Forest and add it to your Collection in front of you. All players must be able to clearly see the tile you picked, and the ones already in your Collection. 3) Scout The Forest : - Choose 3 face-down tiles in The Forest and put Eye Tokens on them. - Look at the selected tiles, one by one. The Eye Tokens make sure you remember which 3 tiles you selected. - Choose one of these three tiles and show it to all other players. All players must acknowledge they saw the tile. After that, place the tile back, face-down. - You can choose one of the two remaining tiles and place it face-up. Or you can choose to leave both face-down. When a tile is placed face-up in this manner, it can no longer be collected by anyone for the rest of the game. However, tiles that lay face-up in The Forest can still have a special influence. (See Allies, page 5) 4) Count the number of points you collected again and tell the other players your score. Besides these actions, there are also 2 allies, The Knight and The Dragon, that have special abilities you can use at any time during the game, even outside of your turn. (See page 6&7)

5 End of the Game When you start you turn with enough points to win the game (See Goal, page 2), you tell the other players so. They can then use the special ability of their Knight or Dragon to reduce your score. If they do and you are left with a score that is not enough to win, the game continues on. If no other player can, or wants to, reduce your score, the game ends and you win. Furthermore, if a player succeeds to start his turn with Mandrago Roots of all six colors in his Collection, he or she also wins the game. When there are no face-down tiles left in The Forest, and nobody has enough points to win, the game ends immediately and the player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most Mandrago Roots wins. If this still results in a tie, the player with the most Allies wins the game. If there is still a tie after that, play again. The Tiles Mandrago Roots Mandrago Roots come in 6 different colors, with 3 root tiles of each color in The Forest. The tiles have the numbers 1,2 and 3 on them. These are used to show how much points a Root is worth at any time during the game. In their default state, each Root is worth 2 points, but The Goblin and Faerie of the corresponding color can influence their value, when these creatures are lying face-up in The Forest. The Faerie increases the value by 1 and The Goblin decreases the value by 1 for the Roots of their color. Example : You have 1 yellow Root, 2 blue ones and 3 green ones in your Collection in front of you. In The Forest, the yellow Faerie and the green Goblin are lying face-up. This means your yellow Root is worth 3 points, your blue ones 2 points each and your green ones are worth 1 point each. In total, your Roots are worth 10 points : 1 x 3 points (yellow) + 2 x 2 points (blue) + 3 x 1 points (green)

6 When you collect a Root, make sure it is turned in such a way that its value is pointed up. This way, you can easily keep track of your score. Whenever a Faerie or Goblin is turned face-up in The Forest, or removed from the game, all players adjust the value of the Mandrago Roots in their Collection. Allies There are 2 kinds of Allies : Day- and Night Creatures. This is indicated by the symbol in the upper right corner of the tile : Day Creatures have a sun as a symbol, Night Creatures have a moon symbol. The Satyr is an exception and is neither Day nor Night. Allies can have 2 different abilities. One is active for all players when they are lying face-up in The Forest, the other one is only active for you, when you have collected the Ally and the tile is lying in front of you in your Collection. The Faerie(Day Creature) : All Mandrago Roots of her color are worth 1 point more. : The Faerie does not influence the value of her Roots. She does count towards the Satyr s special ability.

7 The Goblin (Night Creature) : All Mandrago Roots of his color are worth 1 point less. : The Goblin does not influence the value of his Roots. He does count towards the Satyr s special ability. The Wizard (Day Creature) : The other Wizard is worth 2 points. : As long as the Wizard is in your Collection, you can look at one extra tile while Scouting The Forest (use an extra Eye Token). You still need to show one tile to the other players and you still may choose to turn 1 of the scouted tiles face-up. If the other Wizard lies face-up in The Forest, the Wizard in your Collection is worth 2 points. The Knight (Day Creature) : The other Knight is worth 2 points. : When you Collect a Knight from The Forest and place it in your Collection, put 1 Combat Token on it. You can use this token once, by removing it from the game and have your Knight perform one of these actions : 1) Choose a Night Creature from The Forest or from another player s Collection, and remove it from the game. 2) Protect one Day Creature against the special ability of The Dragon. If the other Knight lies face-up in The Forest, the Knight in your Collection is worth 2 points.

8 The Witch (Night Creature) : The other Witch is worth 2 points. : You immediately win the game when you have enough points for victory, you don t need to wait until the beginning of your next turn. Other players can still use their Knight or Dragon to reduce your points below the necessary amount to win. If so, the game continues on. If the other Witch lies face-up in The Forest, the Witch in your Collection is worth 2 points. The Dragon (Night Creature) : The other Dragon is worth 2 points. : When you Collect a Dragon from The Forest and place it in your Collection, put 1 Combat Token on it. You can use this token once, by removing it from the game and have your Dragon perform one of these actions : 1) Choose a Day Creature from The Forest or from another player s Collection, and remove it from the game. 2) Protect one Night Creature against the special ability of The Knight. If the other Dragon lies face-up in The Forest, the Dragon in your Collection is worth 2 points. The Satyr : The other Satyr is worth 2 points. : When the Satyr is in your Collection, every Ally in your Collection is worth 1 extra point. (Including the Satyr) If the other Satyr lies face-up in The Forest, the Satyr in your Collection is worth 3 points. (2 points for the Satyr in The Forest + 1 point from the ability of the Satyr in your Collection) The Satyr is neither a Day nor Nightcreature and is protected from the abilities of the Knight and the Dragon.

9 Important! There can never be 2 Satyrs in 1 player s Collection. If you already Collected a Satyr and Collect a second one from The Forest, put it back in its place in The Forest, face-up. Clarifications When a player Collects a tile, the tile is no longer in The Forest, but in that player s Collection. Players place the tiles in their Collection in front of them, clearly visible to all other players. The location of the tiles is very important for the mechanic of the game. Take care to place a tile you pick up during scouting back in exactly the same place as it was before. When an Ally is destroyed by either the Dragon or the Knight, remove it from the game. Put these tiles in a pile, clearly seperate from The Forest. This pile is face-up and can be examined by all players at all times. When Scouting tiles during their turn, players mark these tiles with Eye Tokens. A player can look at these marked tiles as often as he or she likes during his or her turn. The Eye Tokens make sure players don t make mistakes when looking at the tiles again. If a player mistakenly reveals a tile he or she wasn t supposed to, that tile is removed from the game. Other players can now demand for a restart if they feel their strategy is compromised by the mistake. However, if all players agree, the can choose to continue the game. When you use a Dragon/Knight Combat Token, but the target is protected by another Knight/Dragon, the Combat Token is still used and removed from the game.

10 Optional rules Instead of placing the tiles in neat rows and columns during setup, you can choose to just spread them in a disorderly manner on the table. This makes it harder to remember the location of revealed tiles and increases the difficulty of the game. You can choose to have the discard pile with removed tiles face-down, so players cannot see which tiles are in it. This also adds an extra level of difficulty to the game. Playing in teams You can play Mandrago with 4 players in 2 teams of 2 players. Make sure members of 1 team are not sitting next to each other, so that the current team switches each turn. The game lasts until one team scores 20 points at the start of one of the team member s turn. (Add the scores of the 2 players together). When a player has Roots of all 6 colors at the beginning of his turn, his team also wins. Players cannot share clues or any other information about the locations of tiles with their team member.

11 Overview of special abilities from Allies in your Collection With the Wizard in your Collection, you can look at one extra tile while Scouting The Forest. You still need to show one tile to the other players and you still may choose to turn 1 of the scouted tiles face-up. Remove the Combat Token from your Knight and perform one of these actions : 1) Choose a Night Creature from The Forest or from another player s Collection, and remove it from the game. 2) Protect one Day Creature against the special ability of The Dragon. You immediately win the game when you have enough point for victory. You don t need to wait until the beginning of your next turn. Remove the Combat Token from your Dragon and perform one of these actions : 1)Choose a Day Creature from The Forest or from another player s Collection, and remove it from the game. 2) Protect one Night Creature against the special ability of The Knight. When the Satyr is in your Collection, every Ally in your Collection is worth 1 extra point. (Including the Satyr)
