3 NJAS Heron Survey Objectives To determine the abundance and distribution of long-legged legged colonial water birds at various sites and habitats used for feeding To explore foraging and aggressive behaviors in the birds To mobilize, train, and coordinate citizen scientists in conducting these surveys

8 Survey Methodology Suitable survey sites were selected based on the NJAS Avian Abundance Survey and through conversations with experts at the various sites Each site/location will be visited 10 times from June to the end of October. Each volunteer will be assigned one or two sites

10 Survey Methodology During each survey and at each point the observer records tide level, time of day, and weather information At each point the observer records how many of each species of heron and egret are seen.
11 Survey Methodology Species we are recording during this survey include: Great Egret (GREG) Snowy Egret (SNEG) Black-crowned crowned Night Heron (BCNH) Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) Great Blue Heron (GBHE) Glossy Ibis (GLIB) Green Heron (GRHE) Little Blue Heron (LBHE) Tricolored Heron (TRHE)

14 BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATIONS 3-minute observations
15 BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATIONS For each individual long-legged legged waterbird at each site/location, record: Species (enter code) The age of the bird: Adult (A), Juvenile (J). Tag color and number (if tagged) Habitat
16 BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATIONS For each individual long- legged waterbird that is feeding record: number of strikes number of successes (within 3 minutes)

19 2008 VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION June 2008 Trained 40 volunteers; selected sites based on past studies and volunteer input June-August 2008 Enlisted an additional 15 volunteers June-November Volunteers submitted over 250 surveys, more to come Too early to determine observation hours

34 2008 PILOT SEASON: SUMMARY As expected, the Meadowlands and Raritan Bay regions provide important foraging habitat for colonial waterbirds in the NJ/NY Harbor Preliminary results suggest differences among sites, habitats and tide levels Final data analysis will include a comparison of behavior and foraging success among sites, habitats and tides
