1 Indian Art Course Description KHS 9 th 12 th ~ 2 Semester Elective A design course, which will enable students to make an original design, based on the elements & principles of Northwest Coast Indian design. Students will utilize these functions in various styles of Indian handicrafts and artistry. Students must have completed a design course in order to take the various styles of Indian art. KGBSD Course Standards: Standard 1: The student will be able to implement the rules and forms of Northwest Coast Indian art. Standard 2: The student will be able to select and use art materials that are appropriate for that style of Indian art. Standard 3: The student will be able to create a Northwest Coast Indian design following the rules and forms of Northwest Coast Indian art. Standard 4: The student will be able to create a Northwest Coast Indian design in beads, using the traditional colors, and following the rules and principles of Northwest Coast Indian art. Standard 5: The student will be able to create a leather doll, moccasins, or pouch. Standard 6: The student will be able to create a two or three-dimensional Northwest Coast Indian carving. Standard 7: The student will keep supplies, equipment and area in good condition. Standard 8: The student will be able to speak and understand many words and phrases in the Tsimshian language. Standard 9: The student will be able to create a carving tool. High School 1
2 Content/Performance Indicators: Standard 1: The student will be able to implement the rules and forms of Northwest Coast Indian art. 1.1 Identify primary, secondary, and tertiary form lines. 1.2 Draw ovoids using guidelines and principles. 1.3 Position inner ovoid and draw an eyelid liner around it. 1.4 Draw U-shapes using guidelines and principles. 1.5 Draw basic design of a head of an animal or fish using ovoid and U-shapes and following the rules of Northwest Coast Indian Design. 1.6 Draw a body design to go with the head. 1.7 Color primary, secondary, and tertiary form limes correctly. 1.8 Identify and speak words and phrases in the Tsimshian language. Standard 2: The student will be able to select and use art materials that are appropriate for that style of Indian art. 2.1 Transfer design to felt or wood. 2.2 Use traditional color in the correct areas. 2.3 Bead design in an allotted time period. 2.4 Change thread following the procedure. 2.5 Trace patterns and cut leather with minimal waste. 2.6 Cut and sew rabbit fur. 2.7 Sharpen glover s needle, straight, and hook knives. 2.8 Use India ink, and penholder with an extra fine point. Standard 3: The student will be able to create a Northwest Coast Indian design following the rules and forms of Northwest Coast Indian art. 3.1 Use space, line, shape, and form elements of Northwest Coast Design. 3.2 Use unity, balance, and proportion in design. 3.3 Use a variety of ovoid and U-shapes. 3.4 Distinguish the differences in the representation of Northwest Coast Design. 3.5 Use the correct colors. 3.6 Create an acceptable representation of Northwest Coast Design. 3 Standard 4: The student will be able to create a Northwest Coast Indian design in beads, using the traditional colors, and following the rules and principles of Northwest Coast Indian art. 4.1 Transfer design neatly onto material. 4.2 Do beading techniques neatly. 4.3 Use traditional colors in an appropriate manner. 4.4 Change thread as need arises, using the correct procedure. 4.5 Prepare the beaded project for the edging. 4.6 Complete a neat project in an allotted time period. Standard 5: The student will be able to create a leather doll, moccasins, or pouch. 5.1 Trace around pattern onto deerskin and cut neatly. 5.2 Use and sharpen glover s needle correctly. 5.3 Do a neat overhand stitch and sew leather project correctly. 5.4 Insert polyester stuffing into body of doll correctly. 5.5 Create a head from cheesecloth, stuffing, and leather and attach it to the doll s body. 5.6 Cut rabbit fur with a razor blade, sew it, and attach it to the doll. 5.7 Draw a face onto the leather doll, using India ink and pen with extra fine point. 5.8 Sew lining correctly. Standard 6: The student will be able to create a two or three-dimensional Northwest Coast Indian carving. 6.1 Know grain of wood, and be able to sand it without scratching the wood. 6.2 Use straight and hook knives safely. 6.3 Do a V-cut and straight cut correctly with a lot of practice. 6.4 Sharpen knives correctly. 6.5 Carve neatly and plane the correct elements of design for contrast, emphasis, and balance. 6.6 Sand and prepare project neatly and professionally for completion. 6.7 Apply stain of varnish onto wood neatly and without waste. High School 3
4 Standard 7: The student will keep supplies, equipment and area in good condition. 7.1 Put supplies in folder or bag and into designated area. 7.2 Follow directions on the correct procedure on storing beading supplies to prevent spilling beads and losing needles. 7.3 Follow directions for transferring design or tracing patterns onto materials and cutting materials correctly. 7.4 Follow directions on the correct procedure on storing beading supplies to prevent spilling beads and losing needles. 7.5 Follow directions on knife safety and care. 7.6 Clean assigned area at the end of class period. Major Activities: Draw one Northwest Coast Indian design (head and body). Bead three Northwest Coast Indian designs or make a small dance robe in place of beading. Sew one leather project using skin. Carve Northwest Indian designs. Make carving tool handles in woodshop. Make carving tool blades in welding. Cultural field trips through state and Ketchikan Indian Community as available. Speak and understand words and phrases in Tsimshian language. High School 4
