Box 398, Captain Cook, Hawaii on or about May 1, ! A set of thirteen (13) American late Classical style gondola dining chairs, Louisiana or Mississippi ca , each with arched crest over a curved vase outline back splat, the fitted black leather upholstered slip seats flanked by curved sides rails, raised on sabre front legs. Twelve chairs shown in photograph.!! Condition: One chair with loss to vase shaped back splat. Minor wear from use.! Heights: Varying from approx. 30 3/4 to 31 1/2 inches! Provenance:! Possibly David Pipes (1790-?), owner of the Beech Grove Plantation, Mississippi.! By descent to David Washington Pipes ( ), son of David Pipes.! Inherited by David Washington Pipes second wife Anna Key Fort Pipes (1885-?).

3 ! By descent to Sarah Randolph Pipes Carson Crawford, granddaughter of David Washington Pipes and his second wife Anna. Their granddaughter s mother with the same first name Sarah as her daughter, Sarah Randolph Pipes Carson ( ), married James Carson but divorced him after the birth of their daughter. The older Sarah died as a result of a car accident in 1926 and her daughter Sarah Randolph Pipes Carson Crawford was raised by the grandparents.! By inheritance to Walter James Crawford, M.C., who married Sarah Randolph Pipes Carson Crawford. The chairs inherited by him following his wife s death.! Ownership transferred to the Walter J. Crawford Family Trust.! Notes: Sarah Randolph Pipes Carson Crawford was raised by her grandparents David Washington and Anna Pipes who lived in New Orleans. Their New Orleans house was filled with Southern plantation furniture which reportedly came from the Beech Grove Plantation in Mississippi or possibly from another Southern Plantation called Catalpa located in Louisiana owned by the Fort Family. In the family genealogy, David Washington Pipes ( ) second wife was Anna Key Fort. Included in this Southern plantation furniture was the set of thirteen dining chairs.! Comments: This set of dining chairs was produced over a period of perhaps a decade or so by unidentified craftsmen working for or on a Southern Plantation. The absence of uniformity in the appearance and dimensions of the chairs and the lack of sophistication in the overall construction of the chairs reflects the homegrown charm of Southern plantation culture when attempts were made by plantation

4 owners of limited means to mimic the refined products of Europe and the Northern American States owned by their wealthier Yankee cousins. It is not entirely clear whether these country versions were reproduced by slaves or freeman living on the plantations, or by less technically skilled furniture makers living in the same rural areas near the Southern plantations. The Southern plantation provenance and rustic charm of this set of chairs adds immeasurably to their value.! Market analysis: Sets of sophisticated examples of American Classical style gondola dining chairs made in the Northern States from this period often sell in the range of $2,000 to $5,000. Although copying the same style, the above set of chairs is from the American South and displays an inherent folksy charm arising out of pre-civil War Southern Plantation culture. Less sophisticated, such pieces are highly sought after and valued by collectors of Americana and hence the value of these Southern Plantation Classical gondola chairs is somewhat higher than similar but more sophisticated examples from the North.! Fair Market Value: $7, ! One (1) American Louisiana ca drop-leaf rectangular dining table with two side single plank drop leaves supported on gate legs, the center table top and leaves all raised on tapered cylindrical legs with ring turned accents and ball feet resting on casters.! Condition: Generally good. Some discoloration to wood finish. Joinery of one gate leg cracked. Casters probably added later.

5 ! Height of table: approx. 28 inches! Size of table top with two extended leaves: 47 3/4 X 69 1/2 inches! Provenance: Same as the preceding set of dining chairs.! Comments: This table and the following two side tables/dining table extensions were probably produced on the Beech Grove Plantation in Mississippi, the Catalpa Plantation in Louisiana, or in a country furniture workshop in the immediate vicinity of these two plantations. The lack of sophistication in the construction of this table indicates its Southern country origin.! Market analysis: There is nothing remarkable about this drop-leaf dining table which is a typical example of furniture produced in the Southern States before the American Civil War. The provenance of this piece adds immeasurably to its value.! Fair Market Value: $2, ! Two (2) American Louisiana ca side tables/dining table extensions, each with gate leg supporting a single drop-leaf with rounded corners, the tops raised on slightly tapered cylindrical legs with ring turned accents and ball feet resting on casters.! Condition: Some wear and discoloration of finish from use. A split to plank top of one side table/dining table extension where two planks were originally joined. Casters added slightly later.

6 ! Height of side tables/dining table extensions: approx. 28 inches! Two sizes of side tables/dining table extensions tops: 45 1/2 X 48 inches and 45 X 48 inches! Provenance: Same as the preceding set of dining chairs and drop-leaf dining table.! Comments: These two side tables/dining table extensions appear to have been produced at about the same time as the preceding dropleaf dining table. Like the drop-leaf dining table, there is a similar charming lack of sophistication in the construction of these two pieces which have slightly different top dimensions. Pairs of such drop leaf tables used as extensions for a dining table are somewhat unusual! Market analysis: As in the example of the previous drop-leaf dining table, the provenance of these two pieces adds immeasurably to their value.! Fair Market Value: $3,000.00!!! Wayne W.
