PE, in particular, is utilized to resemble natural rattan. It is especially employed in outdoor pieces such as lounge chairs and bistro sets. These models are very adaptable to varying weather conditions, and are not susceptible to insect attacks and rust. More indoor items, including sofas and beds, are likewise using plastic as the base input. Wood, rattan and bamboo, however, remain the most commonly adopted because of their sustainability. Large markets such as the US and the EU are very particular about the environment-friendliness of imported products and the origins of timber adopted in manufacturing. Local suppliers also emphasize multifunctional and space-saving models. Foldable chairs and tables, for example, can be used in the living room, kitchen and garden. Coffee tables come with multiple drawers for more storage capacity. Outdoor pieces, including bistro sets, and lounge and garden chairs, are likewise gaining more orders because they can be employed in commercial venues such as resorts, hotels and office buildings. Items come mostly in natural colors and finishes to highlight textures and wicker patterns. Some are varnished for a polished effect and to prevent termite infestation. These product trends will continue to be the focus of most design teams over the next six months. Bright colors, particularly for outdoor pieces, will also be emphasized.

Living room models contribute roughly 30 percent to foreign sales. Dining and kitchen items take up nearly one-quarter of shipments. The rest consists of bedroom pieces. Due to the country s insufficient supply of timber, hardwood such as acacia, oak, teak, padauk, and iron and rubberwood are procured from Laos, Cambodia, mainland China and the US. Some varieties are bought from Malaysia, Thailand, New Zealand, Chile, Brazil, Germany and France. White oak, ash, beech and cherry are sourced from the US and Russia. Iron and rubberwood are sometimes obtained from Cameroon, Congo, Togo, Ivory Coast, Mozambique and South Africa. Yellow balau and pyinkado come from Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar. Rubberwood, acacia and teak are sourced from the provinces of Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Quang Tri and Thanh Hoa. MDF and particleboard are bought from Binh Duong, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh and Hung Yen. Some are procured from Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand and Australia. PE and HDPE resin are obtained from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Bamboo is mostly sourced from the provinces of Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. Rattan, seagrass, palm leaf and water hyacinth are sourced from the Mekong Delta River region. Fittings, including nails, screws and locks, are bought from mainland China and Germany. Design & manufacturing R&D teams consist of up to four members in general. About 200 new models are released each year. Sampling time is within four weeks. Production processes vary between small and large suppliers. Models with intricate carvings are usually created in traditional craft villages by home-based artisans. Manufacturing steps include sawing, shaving, carving, trimming, polishing and painting. Basic equipment such as saws, chisels and sandpapers is used. Items made of rattan and water hyacinth are also manually assembled. Weaving is often subcontracted. Framing, painting and finishing are performed in factories. Large companies often have automated assembly lines. Production processes include sawing, framing, humidity treatment, painting and finishing. Saws, drillers, and edge banding, pressing and CNC machines are employed. Some suppliers with ISO 9001:2000 certification procure their equipment from Germany, mainland China and Taiwan. QC is generally performed by 15 personnel. They focus on material, humidity and termite treatments. Inspectors also ensure that the chemicals used pass the EU s REACH policy. Packaging consists of foam and cartons. Delivery time is between 30 and 90 days. Quotes are mainly influenced by design complexity and the availability of raw materials. In particular, some suppliers of rattan occasionally implement sudden price hikes, adding unexpected production costs to
