2 Krupp cast steel manufactory One of the most significant zones of industrial archaeology in the Ruhr area is the so-called Essen west city.

4 Krupp cast steel manufactory In this area accommodating the former Krupp cast steel manufactory only a few buildings have been preserved.

5 Krupp cast steel manufactory The industrial use of the area in the Altendorfer Straße in the western region of the historical center of Essen started in winter 1819/20.

6 Krupp cast steel manufactory Until 1912 the area of the Krupp factory had already grown up to 482 hectares.

7 Krupp cast steel manufactory The area was strongly damaged during the Second World War.

8 Krupp cast steel manufactory Later on large parts of the arrangements were dismantled and levelled. As a result, that area having been industrially used for decades, widely laid unused up to the year Since that time, the area has rapidly changed.

9 Krupp cast steel manufactory Archaeological observations started in In August 2005 the foundations of the former Krupp headquarter (so called Turmhaus ) had been laid open. Together with the archaeological investigations first geodatic and photogrammetric documentations occurred.

15 Krupp cast steel manufactory The archaeological observations revealed that old functional levels were simply filled up or integrated in newer ones. The efforts removing all massive remains would have been too big.

16 Industrial Archaelogy Starting in spring 2007, the main focus of documentation laid on the area of the so-called ThyssenKrupp Quartier, the new companies Headquarter in Essen. An area of approximately 230 hectares is concerned by changes.

20 Industrial Archaelogy An archive documentation is not available or uncompleted. There is a lack of information especially concerning the oldest parts of the facilities.

21 Industrial Archaelogy An example: Probirhaus H a plant, where in 1871 for the first time the Siemens-Martin-process succeded: Probably because of the war between Germany and France there is no archive documentation available at all!

23 Industrial Archaelogy The archaeological documentation (which will be continued until 2009), poses a challenge which is mostly to be fulfilled in a race with the time.

27 Industrial Archaelogy Within the research project RIO * of University of Applied Science Bochum University of Applied Science Mainz and Department of Archeology, Essen a documentation concept for industrial archaeology projects is going to be developed. (*) RIO Spatial Information System For Survey, Documentation And Analysis Of Industrial Archaeology Objects (Supported by The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, 2007).

28 Industrial Archaelogy The local survey is done by several non-contact measuring techniques, like Close-range photogrammetry Terrestrial laser-scanning Aerial photogrammetry with the system LEO (Local Earth Observation, developed at Bochum University of Applied Science).
