3 Dharohar means Heritage. Sanchay means to accumulate. The rich heritage, which has been developed and accumulated through generations of wisdom and experiences by various regional communities across India has immense potential to carry forward the tradition, indigenous styles, art, craft and culture. The state of offers great possibilities for understanding and carrying forward a vast repository of heritage. The native sensibilities of local people have evolved art, craft, culture, architecture that demonstrates profound understanding of a way of life, ethos, relationship with nature and environment, materials, resources, building science. Unfortunately, these traditions face erosion due to increasing modernization and loss of sensitivity towards rich heritage. The art and craft forms in the vernacular cultures and lifestyles, and the traditional knowledge systems are not some relics from the past. They Introduction emphasize on continuity as well. It is important to explore new ideas combining the roots with innovation embedded in heritage. The proposed projects, aim at identifying, documenting, exploring, experimenting and disseminating the rich heritage of through the medium of: o Art and Craft Workshop Series o Heritage Inventories Heritage Inventories

4 There is an urgent need to understand and acknowledge our rich heritage Dharohar. The art and craft forms are a media to carry forward this heritage. They innately imbibe strong principles of every day life, and reflect on varied aspects, design being one of them. Project Dharohar in :, a Medium

5 o through Art and Craft (HPAC) Workshops are proposed as a series of workshops, which provide a platform, where design, art, craft and industrial process engage with each other to create an understanding for the existing heritage and lead to synergies for innovation. o Workshops will be centred on hands on work process, which will give a context to skills and broaden the outlook. The exhibitions at the end of workshops aim at displaying the explorations, and boosting the participants confidence. HPAC Workshop Series othese workshops will also provide base work for development and conceptualisation of the theory of Cluster Mapping and Documentation across regions of with a thematic focus on heritage preservation through the medium of art and craft forms. o Among the younger generation of artisans, craftpersons especially, these workshops envision to encourage an insight, value of their skills and an ability to deal with new ideas. Among the participants, the aim is to bring out a sensitivity towards heritage, and to shape a humane, analytical design process. o HPAC workshops may be considered to be the operative end of the larger centre, where individual art and craft clusters may be engaged with in the near future.

6 Through the proposed workshop series, which centre on heritage preservation in, IIT Roorkee aims to engage with varied art and craft forms with a contemporary vision and integrate them with design education and design industry in order to bring out innovative directions for the future. Secondary Objectives are: o To provide a convergence for varied artisans, craftpersons, interiorarchitects, researchers, designers, heritage managers and experts to explore prototypes that Objectives exhibit tradition and continuity o To establish a link between Heritage (Traditional Knowledge Systems) and contemporary Design Innovations through Workshops o To develop network and linkages between various organizations and institutions dealing with (especially art and craft) o To create a directory of the artisans and craftpersons of. This shall benefit several researchers, students, design professionals and organizations. o To establish a strong web presence for the project Dharohar

18 There is an already existing craft map of. Probably, one map may not be able to do justice to the entire state. The project proposes to develop further such maps for different regions/districts, and for diverse themes, not just crafts.
