2 Advance Shoe Range U n i q u e C o n s t r u c t i o n Evolutionary engineering makes Advance Orthopaedic Footwear both beautiful to look at and wear. S oletech Inc. with its long history in the supply of footwear and orthopaedic materials combined with its extensive knowledge of footwear manufacture identified the growing need for both medium and extra depth footwear and specifically, extra depth footwear that didn t completely sacrifice looks. Following very extensive consultation with Pedorthists and Orthotists in the United States they developed the Advance Shoe range. Advance represents an evolution in adjustable depth inlay shoes. Their goal was to produce a shoe with two specific features in mind. First and foremost, was to make the most comfortable shoes possible while paying attention to the little details which can be most irritating to a patient with foot problems and secondly to provide styling that ensures the shoes are desirable to wear. The result was two ranges of extremely comfortable, lightweight, flexible shoes with numerous features which have been well received by both practitioner and patient or customer. From low to moderate, to high risk diabetics, Advance footwear with its multiple sizes and widths has your fitting options covered. Advance Orthopaedic Footwear The Advance orthopaedic last provides for truly maximum depth and adjustability for a wide range of feet.. At the heart of the shoe lies the Strobel construction. A high quality breathable non woven insole board, provides for a very flexible shoe. Non Woven boards also have much greater resistance to tearing, 1

3 cracking and delaminating than traditional cellulose (paper based) insole materials to ensure long shoe life. Exclusive Instaflex sole construction was expressely designed to facilitate the modification, buildup and fabrication process. The key element of the unique InstaFlex construction is the combination of EVA and hard wearing rubber. The EVA provides excellent cushioning, flexibility and comfort and the rubber provides outstanding abrasion resistance, slip resistance and oil resistance. The abrasion resistance is twice that of normal rubber soles. The EVA sole is a solid EVA there are no weight relief holes in the sole which would cause problems when making a modification. With EVA as the main component of the outsole, Advance shoes are extremely lightweight. The shoe is easily modified by splitting the EVA sole and is easier to cement than typical polyurethane which is very difficult to cement.. T h e F i t Instead of using unisex European sizing, Advance Men s shoes are built on a Men s last and the Women s shoes are built on a Women s last which ensures proper and flexible fit. The Advance last in the Orthopaedic shoes provides maximum depth and adjustability for a wide range of feet. The added vertical height in the shoe accommodates swelling, deformities, brace and/or orthoses. (A special cup sole design allows the shoe to set down into the sole to effectively hide the extra depth and reduce the bulbous look typical of orthopaedic shoes) The high toe box easily accommodates even the more severe cases of hammer toes. The reason the shoe does not look as orthopaedic or bulbous in the forefoot area is due to the construction of the cup sole which allows the shoe to set down into the sole and hide the depth. Additional and ample room on the lateral side of the last accommodates the fifth toe comfortably (for mens & fourth & fifth metatarsal for womens.women with hammer toes have more problems with the fourth metatarsal than men). Availability of multiple sizes and widths from Narrow (A) to Extra Wide (3W) enable the best fit possible. 4 Three different EVA inserts (totalling 11mm in thickness), one molded and two flat are included for additional flexibility in fitting and are also easy to remove to accommodate custom orthoses and AFO s. The Details A fully padded collar with a notch to accommodate the Achilles. The collar is positioned to comfortably align with the medial anklebone. Collar designed to fit snugly under the ankle bones the point here is that the medial ankle bone is higher than the lateral ankle bone and more forward. Thus the collar is lower on the lateral side. If you look at the shoe from the lateral side you can see this. A padded tongue extends to fit more snugly against the front of the ankle assuring a more secure fit. (prevents foot from sliding back & forth) Soft supple upper leathers and pigskin leather linings are breathable to ensure comfort. Both Men s and Womens styles are available with a Velcro closure or with D-rings. The D-rings are used for ease of lacing the shoe and locking eyelets at the top hold the laces securely. 3

5 Advance Comfort Footwear The Advance Comfort last provides a medium depth fit for a wide range of feet and especially for the low risk foot in need of just a little more room. The Comfort last incorporates many of the features of the Orthopaedic last. The toe box provides extra room needed by many patients with problem feet. There is extra room to accommodate the fifth metatarsal. The collar is designed to fit comfortably under the malleoli and is fully padded as is the tongue. Inserts - Advance Comfort Footwear comes with two inserts ; one molded and one flat for flexibility in fitting. Uppers Both Mens and Womens are made from full grain leather Linings - Mens are lined with pigskin and Womens in a nylon treated to wick moisture away from the foot and keep the foot cooler. Outsole the outsole is also Instaflex construction. The shell is compression molded EVA with rubber pads molded to the forefoot and heel areas. Whereas the Orthopaedic sole is a total contact sole for increased stability. The Comfort sole has a slightly breasted heel. The Comfort sole is not made to be modified. The Advance Comfort shoes have less depth and are more fashionably designed. Advance Comfort Expandable Upper Unique approach to dealing with dorsal deformities. The Spandex-like upper is also moldable to relieve pressure at sensitive points. By heating lightly with a heat gun the upper can be molded to accommodate hammer toes, bunions or the problems caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Available in both a tie and a Velcro version for both Men and Women 4

6 Advance Orthopaedic Footwear designed to make modifications easy. The Sole The Instaflex construction comprises a high abrasion resistant EVA shell with a rubber insert molded to the EVA. When looking at the sole in profile you will notice two lines which extend around the side of the EVA shell. The bottom o f these two lines is the cut line which is the guide to use when cutting and separating the sole from the shoe. Follow this line with either a band saw or knife to make a smooth separation. Once this is completed, proceed as you normally would with a build-up. Buff each part lightly to create a smooth surface. As a general rule all the parts prepared for bonding should be roughed and clean of dust. We recommend one of our EVA s such as the (medium density) or (medium/firm) density for the heavier patient. Orthosole The OrthoSole is an oversized blocker sole that provides the modifier with the perfect replacement sole. It is particularly useful in those cases where the sole needs to be widened or modified with a flare. This provides the same sole appearance and performance characteristic of the original sole. This will prevent a split and widen operation and provide a continuous smooth surface on the bottom of the shoe. The OrthoSole is approximately 4.5mm thick and is available in black only. It has abrasion resistance which is twice that of normal rubber soles and is non marking. In those cases where the patient is extremely hard on his/her shoes, the OrthoSole is an excellent replacement outsole for Advance and other types of footwear. Simply rough and even out the current outsole; or cut off the present outsole, rough the surface and cement the OrthoSole using the appropriate adhesive. The Orthosole can be used for flares, stability, or just as a replacement sole for any kind of shoe. Available in Small, Medium, Large and X Large to cover 5

7 Fitting Aids Multi Density Diabetic Insole Comprised of pressure relieving Plastazote type top cover, and molded supportive EVA base this is the ideal insert for pressure sensitive feet. (Approx. 8mm thick) Shock Absorbing Poron Comfort Insoles Perforated Poron cushion surface next to the foot on molded EVA base with additional Poron insert under heel to reduce shock from heel strike. An excellent insole for reducing shock absorption and fatigue. Additional EVA fitting Inserts For fine tuning the fit of the shoe, three thicknesses of fitting inserts are also available 3.2mm, 4.8mm and 6.4mm Ritz Stick Simpl e to use.no conversion of sizes to try and work out. Just ask patient to stand on our Ritz stick, measure length and width and then read off required Advance shoe size. 6

8 SUMMARY OF KEY ISSUES Advance has been successful in designing an extremely comfortable lightweight shoe that take s care of many people s problems. The key difference between Advance and some other brands such as Rockport or Clarks is that they are comfort brands but are not designed to deal with people who have problems with their feet. These problems don t have to be a serious problems, but could be as slight as needing additional room for the fifth toe, which is a basic feature of the shoe. With multiple insoles there is the flexibility for fitting, particularly when someone has a difference between the two feet. This gives them additional room for an off the shelf orthotic or a better insole without affecting the fit. Good toe box broad and room for people with problems with their toes. Long wearing outsoles with Rubber, but advantages of EVA as well. Comfort shoes good looking within the context of providing all of the features and benefits of Orthopaedic shoes Advance shoes are good for people with problem feet, but also for people who are at the point where they need just a little extra room for a comfortable fit. Can service people with Advance that they cannot service with brands such as Clarks or Rockport. true comfort retailing.. Advance Orthopaedic represents the best in maximum depth footwear, while the Advance Comfort Footwear should be considered as a medium depth shoe. The Advance philosophy is that it is easier to take away depth with fitting inserts than it is to add depth to a shoe. 7
