3 eve laurent Originally trained as a designer, Eve grew up and studied in Paris. After completing her bachelor degree at the Ecole Boulle and following a graduate course at ENSCI-Les Ateliers, she decided to learn a variety of glassmaking techniques, including glassblowing, in order to give a material shape to some of her ideas. «I felt that I needed to practice a handicraft to sustain my creative process», she says. The Atelier George project, built with a view to integrating the methods and the workflow of product design, soon became a fertile ground to experiment with new ideas. Laurent, an artisan glassblower, was born to a family of ceramicists. After learning woodturning and spending many hours working in his parents workshop, he turned to glassblowing, inspired by a fascination for this both supple and fragile material. After having worked for fifteen years at the most prestigious French glassmaking companies (Saint Louis, Lalique, Biot), where he acquired more than enough skills to put his ideas into practice, he decided to create his own objects, with Eve, at Atelier George. 4 5

4 hand in hand our philosophy Eve & Laurent met in 2012 while working on a project at the International Centre for Glass Arts in Meisenthal, in the East of France. Since then, they have continued to make glass objects hand in hand, up to the foundation of the Atelier George, which embodies their symbiotic relationship. They sketch and produce their objects together, each in turn adding or subtracting elements until they are able to strike the perfect balance, the image of both their identities. This continuous search for the perfect form is the brand s signature. Shaping glass hand in hand, making ideas come to life. «Every object we produce reflects our dual identities we are both designers and craftspeople. They are indivisible, and this is what makes our trade unique.» 6 7

5 the Moire collection the Moire collection The Moire collection is the result of a work on optical and transparency effects. It is named after the «moiré» patterns of certain fabrics like tulle, which is obtained by overlaying two similar printed or woven patterns. The observation of these wavy, iridescent patterns inspired the textures found in the collection. Among the objects available are light fittings, fine tableware and wall tiles, all of which were handmade using hot glass techniques. 8 9

8 custom-made custom-made The Atelier offers its services to architects and interior decorators, and helps them build projects tailored to their needs. Professionals benefit from the team s product design skills and expertise in glass working as it helps them give form to their ideas. The glass studio already has created several products for interior design, including divider windows made from colored glass rods, doorknobs and wall tiles. In addition, the clients are provided with a color selection chart for several types of colored glass to further suit their needs. 9 the experimental studio the experimental studio Alongside producing their Interior accent pieces, the Atelier develops innovative experimental projects and tries to find new ways of processing and shaping glass. These exploratory projects are part of the «experimental studio». One of its fields of interest is digital making. «Digital tools expand the range of what we can do inside our studio. They allow us to produce our own molds, for example, or to create unconventional tools for glassblowing» Eve says. Her multifaceted academic and professional training helps her envision craft practices through a different lens as an industrial designer, for example. Since 1960, the prize reveals a new generation of creators, chosen upon both artistic and technical skills.
