2 Introduction Opening of areas is a political decision General environmental issues are addressed in OG21 TTA1 Facilities suitable for development in environmentally sensitive areas are considered relevant for this TTA

3 Characteristics of Environmentally Sensitive Areas on the NCS Close to shore Important areas for fishing and fish reproduction Vulnerable marine ecosystems such as coral reefs High tourist value (scenery) Main issue is to avoid oil spill and other environmentally harmful discharges

4 Resource base NPD has estimated the value of oil and gas outside Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja to have an expected NPV of 105 BNOK. NPD, 2010) Additional areas may be regarded as enviromentally sensitive, i.e. Barents sea and near shore Troms and Finnmark

7 Key technologies defined Online seabed survey and environmental monitoring Subsea processing hub with inherent leakage detection and prevention systems; separation, water treatment and reinjection, and oil and gas boosting for transport to shore. Power from shore to operate the subsea processing hub. Enhanced trawl protection and design for co-existence with fisheries Subsea wells and production system with integrated secondary containment system and online leakage and integrity monitoring.

11 Technology development cost The development cost for the required technologies as defined by the TTA is in the order of BNOK. This indicates a strong business case when compared to the NPD estimate of an NPV of 105 BNOK for the petroleum resources in the Lofoten, Senja and Vesterålen Additional areas defined as environmentally sensitive will further strengthen the business case

12 Technology development program Entry into environmentally sensitive areas may have a long time frame, however some of the technologies identified will need a long time to develop and qualify: Remote/online monitoring for leakages and process conditions Improved erosion/corrosion modeling, monitoring and prevention Mechanical integrity monitoring and inspection technologies Advanced subsea processing (i.e. gas dehydration, export quality processing, fiscal metering, automation)
