2 Overall objectives Overall objectives for are to Enhance IACS technical contribution and leadership in the global shipbuilding and shipping industry; Develop rules and standards for safer, more environmentally friendly and energy efficient ships by strengthening cooperation with regulatory bodies and the industry Support innovation and promote application of new technologies, including cyber technology, intelligent ships, etc. Continue to strengthen IACS as a global association: all Members are committed to continuous development of the. organization.

3 Priorities GBS/CSR Cyber Systems New innovative survey techniques IACS Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS) Cooperation with IMO Cooperation with industry--improvement of the mechanism of meetings with industry Other priorities

4 GBS/CSR The first priority is to ensure, at MSC 98, the completion of rectification of non-conformities identified in the initial IMO GBS audit Actions according to IACS Corrective Action Plan as committed to MSC 96, including the development and delivery of URCP, TBs etc. Close communication with industry, such as holding technical meetings, etc.

5 GBS/CSR Amendments to GBS verification guidelines IACS is committed to providing the resources needed to complete the GBS process, believing it will result in well-tuned requirements that continue to improve the industry s positive safety record This will be further discussed in Session 4

6 Cyber system Revision to UR E22 (On Board Use and Application of Computer based systems) was adopted in June 2016, and will enter into force on 1 July 2017 Cyber Systems Panel formally established from 1 July 2016 Formulation of new IACS technical resolutions covering design, manufacture, installations and commissioning, monitoring and maintenance processes regarding cyber equipment and systems

7 Cyber system IACS is also expecting effective communication and cooperation with industry through the Joint Working Group on Cyber System, just established You will hear more about the progress in Session 7

8 New innovative survey techniques Nowadays, new innovative survey techniques, such as advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT), etc.), remote inspection techniques (RIT) (real-time sensing devices carried by drone, remote operated vehicle, unmanned robot arm, divers and climbers, etc.) and other technologies are being more and more applied by the industry and IACS members in the day-to-day survey and inspections There is a growing need from the industry for uniform rules and standards to be developed and applied

9 New innovative survey techniques To promote the application of new techniques, IACS has decided to investigate their implications on survey regime, update common survey requirements, and to develop relevant guidelines/recommendations to meet the demand of latest technological advancement. You will get more information about this initiative also in Session 7

10 QSCS Central to the Classification process is the IACS Quality System Certification Scheme, established 25 years ago. A number of activities planned and conducted during the 25 th Anniversary IACS QSCS is an independent robust audit process. IACS will work to continue to improve the process working with interested parties to assure that it remains the gold Standard for classification society performance that the industry, IMO and Flag States can rely on.

11 Relation with IMO With the confirmation by IMO of IACS Member Societies rules conformity to the Goal-Based Standards, the role of IACS in supporting IMO for the shipping safety and maritime environment protection has been further strengthened; IACS has reconfirmed its long standing commitment to work with IMO as a trusted technical advisor, and will enhance its communication and cooperation with IMO; Working together with partners to promote better regulations at IMO

12 Relation with Industry Close and effective relationships with the Industry are key to IACS role as essential provider of services necessary for the safe and efficient functioning of the global maritime Industry IACS highly values the relationship with the Industry, and has made every effort to deepen the cooperation To that end, IACS senses the necessity of further improvement of the mechanism of meetings with Industry

13 Relation with Industry IACS would like to propose to fine-tune the mechanism for meetings with the Industry at three different levels: 1) Tripartite meeting in October 2) Meeting with Industry as part of December IACS Council meeting 3) Industry Technical Meeting in May/June

14 Relation with Industry Tripartite meeting in October-- discusses common related issues, where desired actions can be identified and subject to the decision of governing bodies of each association Meeting with Industry as part of December s IACS Council meeting is informed of the outcome of the Council meeting, and also serve as a source of suggestion from Industry Industry Technical Meeting (before the spring MSC meeting) -- serves as a platform for Industry and IACS to check the progress on the work undertaken by Joint Working Groups and/or relevant associations and further discuss technical issues within the scope of decisions made by the governing bodies of each association
