Regulation Past, Present & Future Examples of how different regulation has created markets, driven innovation & enabled companies to migrate from products to a service based business model A instance where an industry is ahead of the regulation & an absence of regulation may kill innovation This is not a call for more regulation, rather an illustration of how regulatory change has enabled & driven innovation
Consumer - Hands free driving legislation On December 1, 2003, a law, "The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003", came into force to prohibit drivers using a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, while driving one of the 1 st in the world Before this change in the law, there was a nascent Bluetooth market focused on wire replacement This one piece of legislation changed the Bluetooth market & drove a wireless revolution in audio and in handsets
Industrial - Fire Regulations (US) US Company engauge, originally in the Fire Extinguisher (FE) pressure gauge business, has used regulation & enforcement to develop a connected extinguisher The wireless sensor reports FE pressure & location in accordance with US Federal Law This allows companies to know they are compliant with all Fire Code regulation to avoid costly fines or worse liability in the event of an incident This innovation has now means engauge can offer EaaS or Extinguishers as a Service
Healthcare Monitoring Sleep Apnoea On 1 st January 2016 new EU rules for the licensing of drivers with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) OSA affects 4% of the UK population or 3.4M in the UK EU Directive now mandates the monitoring of patient compliance to treatment Mandiblular Advancement Device (MAD) from Somnomed with built in wireless monitor Devillebis CPAP treatment is connected using Mobile network
Future Autonomous Cars Yes/No? Driver assistance now common in many new cars Park pilot, Lane departure, RADAR Controlled Adaptive Cruise No regulatory changes needed for these Autonomous car tech will be mainstream market ready by 2020 What about regulation?
Future - Developments ahead of regulation? Many regulatory challenges lay ahead Most notably the questions of ethics & liability Summed up by the ethical questions If an autonomous vehicle finds itself in a situation where it will either hit a person in the road or an oncoming car, which will it choose? If one or the other were inevitable, would it rather hit another car full of passengers, or crash itself into a wall, potentially hurting its occupants? Most industry observers are predicting up to 10 years for widespread regulation to catch up with the Tech & the market
Summary IoT businesses are already being enabled by existing regulation expect more to come Regulation is traditionally developed in collaboration with stakeholders through consultations this is an opportunity to engage with regulators & help shape the rules In the UK - Expect an Ofcom consolation to explore the needs of security of IoT As seen above, many regulatory situations present opportunities for innovation business success
