4 THE PROFESSION The global market has a growing demand for evolved interior designers with competences both in the architectural composition of a space and in the design of services, in order to organize and improve the relation between space and people. The interior designer deals with the design of spaces in different fields: first and foremost, home living space in all its forms, from the isolated villa to a flat in an apartment building, from the urban loft to the temporary emergency dwelling. The Interior Designer is a key professional due to his ability to interpret and envision space,be it a new or pre-existing construction. He knows how to interpret the image of entire cities in terms of space, working with areas where tourists are welcomed, such as Elena Barbera - Hotel de Russie hotels, restaurants, cafés, stores, or malls. He also develops public spaces used by the community such as banks, post offices, hospitals, schools, or cultural sites such as museums, art galleries, cinemas, and theatres. The designer can also intervene on spaces connected to mobility such as airports, buses, train stations, and subways. Lastly, he not only operates within the field of architecture, but also in exteriors, designing squares, playgrounds, and gardens.

6 THE COURSE Job Prospects Interior Designer, Exhibition Designer, Shop Designer, Restaurant Designer, Designer for Hospitality, Interactive Exhibition Designer, Design Manager. IED Design in Rome strongly focuses on spreading competences making the Italian capital a unique place in the world: the cultural offer - made of hundreds of museums - tourist reception facilities and services that constitute the bone structure of Roman economy, that is, hospitality and catering. Main goal is training students to conceive their works with a unique spirit, merging feelings and perceptions with a rigorous functional disposition. They learn to interact with the Italian design system, that complex and unique system of relations among designers from all over the world. Great importance is also given to acquiring advanced skills in project presentation and spatial design, using both traditional and digital tools. Working within an information-oriented society, the interior designer must be able to communicate his project in a way suitable to the various media platforms. Students thus learn to draw freehand as well as use computer CAD software and create models using advanced tools like 3-D printers and laser cutting machines, to create three Gaia Ascone, Silvia Sanchietti Vinoforum dimensional digital models and to produce photo-realistic images (rendering) applying materials and lighting to virtual environments, as well as to produce project presentation videos. Students are taught to use the latest interaction technologies applied to design, such as the Arduino processor and respective sensors, experimenting different ways of sharing open source projects also by using social media.

8 THE STRUCTURE Training is divided into six semesters, for a total duration of three years, each one with a specific purpose. IED method - based on learning by doing and on project culture - allows students to immediately apply the acquired knowledge and translate it into practical design skills, essential in the job market. The educational training alternates frontal lectures and lab activity through individual or multidisciplinary team projects. The undergraduate path is based on cultural, methodological, technical and technological tools and their application through increasingly complex projects in collaboration with external partners (agencies, companies, institutions). IED faculty can count on its team of renowned professionals as lecturers, constantly supporting students in their learning experience. Students can benefit from a privileged student/teacher relation thanks to the small size of the classes (up to 25 students). Students can partially define, in relation to their training needs, their Individual Study Plan choosing among Specializations (if available), optional training activities and extra-curricular activities offered by IED network or one of the Partner universities. A teaching method that builds its value on the comparison, the exchange and the relationship among students, faculty and companies. The first year is introductory and seeks to provide students with the technical, cultural and basic design tools, teach them how to manage their creativity and identity. The training activities aim at making students familiar with the basic technical equipment and allow them to acquire an adequate design methodology and a solid cultural preparation. The second year is a moment of in-depth study, in which the method and tools are experienced through structured design workshops. The cultural, economic and technical disciplines in the study plan help students deepen and integrate contents and phases of the design process, allowing them to acquire knowledge and competence in specific professional areas. During the third year, students are introduced to cultural themes of increasing complexity and acquire the latest tools for the development and communication of the project. Project planning takes on a dominant role and students learn to independently manage the development of a project. By the third year, students enrolled in the courses taught in Italian have to show proficiency in the English language. By the third year, students enrolled in the courses taught in English have to to show proficiency in a second foreign EU language (preferably Italian). Students who possess a certificate are assigned credits and are admitted directly to the final test. For students who do not have a certificate, IED shall organize in-house language courses or courses organized in collaboration with certified institutes with the aim of obtaining the required proficiency. During these three years, project workshops, cultural seminars, competitions, conferences, special projects, visits to production plants and companies will be proposed as well. Final Project The Final Project is developed in a professional simulation context in 2 semesters and 2 steps: the first one dedicated to research and detailed study of theoretical, technical tools, necessary to develop the concept. The second one consists of the practical realization of the project itself and an in-depth analysis in terms of marketing/ communication strategies.

10 METHODOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS The project activity, which is both theoretical and technical, is developed in close collaboration with professors and asserted professionals of the industry and combines tangible design and constant updating of the learning content. The workshops and cross-disciplinary projects carried out in teams of students from different backgrounds develop a multidisciplinary approach. 1 ST YEAR 2 ND YEAR 3 RD YEAR Final Project Workshop with Companies The graph represents the ratio between theoretical content and design workshops, featuring all of the undergraduate courses. Design The projects, are conducted in collaboration with companies, organizations and institutions, which allows students to immediately start measuring themselves against the production system. The final project is the synthesis of the IED learning by doing methodology, which underlies the entire three-year training program. Cultural Disciplines and Techniques Cross-disciplinary projects SUBJECTS 1 ST YEAR HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ART 1 The purpose of this course is to impart knowledge about the most important artistic movements and their leading personalities in the modern period and the contemporary age. In addition to describing how art has developed in the course of history, it aims to develop a critical understanding of art s codes and of the work of art as a complex visual text and as a phenomenon that narrates cultural, social and aesthetic evolutions, perceived in particular in terms of its relations with other forms of expression and communication (photography, advertising, cinema etc.). The course focuses on a selection of movements and of artists of relevance from Impressionism to the present day, so as to provide the methodological tools that enable students to understand and analyse current trends. DESIGN METHODS The course provides the students with the analytical tools to examine the relationship among product, people, market and processes. Theoretical concepts, taught in the course, enable students to understand which cultural factors are crucial for a project. Furthermore, the course focuses on the various stages of a product development, from the briefing to the final project. Hence, it tackles the method/ process elaborated by Bruno Munari, according to which the whole designing problem is divided into sub-problems: behaviours, people s wishes, market, functionality, ergonomics, technological a technical issues, shape and sensorial aspects. MATERIAL TYPOLOGIES 1 Familiarity with how materials behave provides the basic tools for translating an idea into a creation and understanding the expressive potential of the various materials, both traditional and experimental. The curriculum tackles this topic from two related standpoints: one technical and scientific, the other focused on the history of technology. Theoretical lessons are devoted to examining materials physical and morphological properties, as well as verifying the technologies used to transform them and the industrial and craft processes used to work with them. The course tackles all the components of a building s structure, analysing the technological processes and the technical characteristics of building components. Subsequently, students learn about all the natural and artificial materials used in defining an interior, with a special focus on their appearance and technical performance. Attention is then

12 paid to designing the bathroom and kitchen spaces in a domestic setting and all the related hardware fittings. Lastly, the course analyses how a piece of furniture is constructed by studying the materials and the assembly technologies used to make it. HISTORY OF DESIGN 1 The convention is that the study of design history starts from the second half of the nineteenth century, when the social, technological and industrial factors necessary for developing the first serial productions were first consolidated. This course analyses the leading Italian and international movements in design culture. Using a series of examples to illustrate a reasoned approach, the course summarises on the one hand the formation of archetypes of category and form and, on the other, the evolution of construction techniques and rituals of usage. With its heritage of visual knowledge, design history confers the ability make a critical interpretation that underlies the process of designing a work. The course sets out to provide students with the information they need to understand the fundamental milestones and chapters in the historical development of western architecture, from the Industrial Revolution to the projects completed in this century, also in terms of theoretical principles and in relation to the urban environment. The other purpose of this course is to furnish students with a suitable grounding in technical terminology and the methodological tools necessary for interpreting a work of architecture. The course discusses the situation of architecture at the time of the industrial revolution, then progresses to analyse twentiethcentury avantgarde architectures, before culminating in studying the design philosophy practised by the maestros of the Modern Movement by analysing their leading works. This analysis then continues with the works and the architects who have built the history of architecture from the Second World War o the present day. TECHNICAL DRAWING The course delves into the principle of descriptive, projective and perspective geometry, which are preparatory to the learning of technical design and the use of 2D and 3D project design software. The course focuses on freehand design where issues linked to the operating practice, measure evaluation and the reproduction on paper. Then the course tackles the representation of the constitutive elements of a building: foundations, masonry, attics, graphic technique of interior finishing, of components, of furniture and technical systems. Students will learn the use of software that enable 2D design of objects and architecture. MODELING TECHNIQUES 1 The course provides the theoretical and practical tools to produce models using the most appropriate materials for the project scale and the different design stages. The 3D vision enables the student to examine the concept and to verify the formal consistency. Hence, the model can be compared in real terms to proportions and volumes, thus defining the project from a 3D perspective. Exercises of ever increasing complexity allow to improve the mastery of tools, processes and production details, both for the development of prototypes and final models to be presented to the client. GRAPHIC DESIGN Using graphic composition programs to acquire IT literacy makes it easier for students to express an idea and enables the digital tools of representation to be correlated with the notions of visual perception. Teaching the use of the leading image processing programs enables students to maximise the impact of a concept, manage 2D images and modify their contents. The course in graphic design provides students with the tools for making a clear, personal presentation of their creativity and skills. The course features two modules: Sketching and Multiple Language. The aim of the Sketching module is to impart a capacity to see, perceive and illustrate an object. Students are taught the various techniques of freehand drawing by doing practical exercises in class. The Multiple Language module provides the tools that students will need to manage images, texts and drawings when presenting their own work, using such graphic software packages as Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. The course aims to teach students to use the computer as a working tool, together with other techniques of illustration, such as freehand drawing and study models, developing their own language from the combination of different techniques used to narrate the project. DESIGN 1 The aim of this course is to put basic design methods into practice and to draw up the roadmap for creating a work, from the concept to the hypothesis of technological and functional development, complete with related techniques of communication. The Interior Design workshops enable students to understand the relationship between the individual and the built environment and to verify the extent to which the environment s composition influences its users perception and sensory responses. Students start out from a brief to define the details of the project s construction. The course comprises two modules: Home Design and Ergonomic Design. The Home Design module offers a first practical design exercise in the individual s most intimate space: the home. The aim here is to provide students with all the knowledge they will need to define spaces correctly, encouraging them to be creative in devising correct and innovative solutions by studying new forms of contemporary lifestyles. The Ergonomic Design module sets students on course to learn the ergonomic principles underlying design and provides them with the tools they need to check that their projects cater for the human being s need for comfort, both during the analysis stage and in the design phase. PERCEPTION THEORY AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF FORM This course aims to provide students with an understanding of sensory perceptions and cognitive processes, illustrating the scientific theories that explain how our senses function and correlating those functions with research into the psychology of form. In addition to tackling principles of colour theory, it uses the medium of the applied sciences to impart the techniques for analysing the relationship between objects, space and persons. The psychology of form establishes relations between mechanisms of perception and the issues related to the use we make of form, together with the consequential development of creative idioms. The course comprises two modules: Semiotics and CMF (Colours, Materials and Finishes). The Semiotics module introduces students to the main concepts of structural and interpretative semiotics, applying them to specific case studies of space design and to design dynamics. The CMF module stimulates student s ability to analyse products in relation to the use of colours and of finishes as design tools. The course covers colour harmonies, accords and contrasts, complementary colours and contrasts of quality and of quantity as tools to be interpreted in a design experience. PHOTOGRAPHY This course studies the idioms and techniques of photography used for creating a documentary record of a work and communicating about it. The course provides elements of image interpretation, production and postproduction, with time spent in workshops that enables students to experiment with the medium of photography, so as to identify approaches and techniques suitable for shooting photographs of spaces, scenarios and objects. 2 ND YEAR MATERIALS TYPOLOGIES 2 The course focuses on topics linked to new technologies of sustainable design and their application within the construction sector, in order to broaden the understanding of material and structure application in the design of interior spaces. The physical feature of some groups of materials in relation to potential processing technologies will be examined. In particular the course focuses on the relationship between project and energy quality and material sustainability, thus including also constructive and structural aspects. Theoretical lessons will

alternate with practical exercises in order to enhance the awareness of innovative technical methods. DRAWING TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES The course aims at refining rendering skills, from free hand drawing to digital tools, to enhance rapidity and communicational effectiveness in the presentation of an idea. The project is then described in its stages according to the most suitable way: free-hand preliminary drawings and digital renderings achieved with the latest and most updated software. MODELLING TECHNIQUES 2 This development on the practices of model-making is designed to support the courses in design, which need models to study and present. The course also teaches more complex techniques of model- making, combining technological skills with the practices of craftsmanship. The fact that this course is organised as a workshop implies that the techniques are learned directly and provides a pragmatic approach to facilitating students understanding of geometries and volumes. The curriculum also contributes to their search for a personal idiom. This course enables students to gain familiarity with a more experimental use of materials, getting to grips with a variety of practical techniques. Developing models or prototypes to support the design courses, it focuses on such traditional materials as paper, cotton, wood and plastics, expanding the possibilities for making models by including latex and resin moulds. The course also tackles and experiments with approaches for using CAM technologies, such as rapid prototyping, 3D printing and laser cutting machinery. HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE 1 History of architecture is analysed from the point of view of projects methods and the technological and social contexts. The course delves into the heritage of the Modern Movement and its expression in the various geographical contexts, both European and international. The programme of the course traces back events and avant-garde movements after the Second World War, in order to provide a historicalcritical knowledge of formal archetypes and the protagonists of the architectural culture. Through the analysis of buildings, projects and documents, the characteristics of architecture of the last fifty years are outlined. DESIGN 2 Developing on the theme of the information learned during the first year, students must now demonstrate that they have absorbed a design methodology by drawing up projects with a greater degree of complexity and more itemised definition of formal and technical details. Students take part in design workshops to refine their ability to elaborate interior design concepts, ranging in application from areas of distribution to outdoor areas, temporary installation designs and alternative spaces for preparing, selling and consuming food. The course is articulated in two distinct design experiences: Shop Design and Interaction Design The Shop Design module tackles the topic of designing spaces related to selling goods and services, by conceiving spaces that are both exciting and functional. The aim of the Interaction Design module is to train designers of interactive installations and services to be capable of understanding, interpreting and incorporating the latest computer technologies in spatial contexts that call for updated form of communication, designing interactive scenarios or services with a high degree of technological innovation. PRODUCT DESIGN In this course, students work on projects in which theoretical and methodological issues are combined with practice, demonstrating that they have absorbed a design methodology by drawing up projects with a greater degree of complexity and more itemised definition of formal and technical details. Guided by tutors, they complete projects by applying their method to a variety of disciplinary sectors. In this way, students put their creative visions and the sustainability of their ideas to the test. 3D COMPUTER MODEL-MAKING TECHNIQUES The course focuses on the digital processing of images in a 3D context. The first part of the course analyses 3D surface modelling software, the automatic generation of perspectives, views and sections, shadows, surface texturing and rendering. The second part of the course delves into rendering and animation to create, visualise and control 3D objects through texturing and lighting techniques. Rendering and animation techniques are a tool to produce photorealistic renderings of great impact for 3D architecture design. SOCIOLOGY OF CULTURE Sociology, as the science of social phenomena, represents one of the most effective tools to understand the complexity behind the modern world. Hence it is one of the most valid instruments to study the development of cultures, of ethical and social values, of lifestyles and of new collective changes. The course tackles the historical origin of this discipline; it delves into lifestyles and the dynamic of social interaction and its diffusion processes. Moreover, social forms of communication, the birth of communication processes and communication tools are analysed. HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE 2 This course focuses on the history of art since the second World War. An interdisciplinary study of the political and social history of recent decades provides the background against which contemporary production is described. An analysis of case studies and monographic lectures about individual Italian and international maestros of the avant-garde help students understand what is happening today and to develop a critical capacity of their own. DESIGN MANAGEMENT The course analyses both strategic marketing tools in relation to the product (stages and realisation methods, time, costs and advantages) and market / consumption mechanisms of the social contest and targets. The course tackles the concept of brand, which stands for the main topic for the definition of values that the company is willing to transmit to the market and the values that the market actually perceives. Then the newgeneration consumer will be studied as well as his approach to objects and spaces, in the light of marketing and the experience that it represents. Moreover, the strategic side of marketing is analysed in order to understand and foresee consumers expectations. 3 RD YEAR DESIGN 3 This course features workshop exercises of increasing complexity compared to the previous courses in Design. The scale of operations is outdoors. Students interpret projects for street furniture and service designs, whose purpose is to improve the quality of their locations, paying attention to economic, environmental, technological and commercial restrictions, as well as to those set by users. These workshop exercises focus on the theme of community spaces in a continuum with outdoor spaces museums, large offices and motorway service stations raising students awareness about the many different kinds of people who use them and the many different ways in which they are used. These are spaces that hover somewhere between places for meeting together, for conveying culture and for using leisure time, which are increasingly equipped with digital technologies and services. According to the type of interior in question, students have to manage the lighting technology design, the complexity of safety stipulations, energy sustainability and environmental comfort. The course is articulated in two modules: Designing Community Spaces and Designing Multipurpose Spaces The Community Spaces module tackles the topic of designing pubic space as a place where the members of a community relate to each other. From the office to the commercial space and from the square to the metro station, students get to grips with the community dimension of design, studying its dynamics and its potential. The Multipurpose Spaces module tackles the topic of versatile spaces and devices, where form and function meet on a common terrain of comparison, in designs whose natural expression is vested in system and process. VIRTUAL ARCHITECTURE The student learns to use software for photo rendering that can recreate products, objects, materials, lights similarly to a

snapshot. Hence, the designer can create 3D objects and environment through photo-like images in order to verify material and chromatic choices of the project. The student gains expressive and interpretation autonomy, his/her skills range from the concept to the animation of details, and from interactive and flexible video production to the photo-insertion in a real context. PHENOMENOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS The course deepens the development of phenomenology that explains the relationship between reality and artists expression. The course helps to understand how contemporary forms of creativity (art, fashion, advertising, design) are born, represented and perceived. Especially cinema stands for an environment where the design of the set, of objects and of lights is intertwined with product design and architecture. Some films are analysed where interior architecture and design are lived by the actors as a relationship man object real space and where the audience mentally perceive them through perception and identification. CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY The course aims at identifying shapes and symbolic relationships in the collective imagination, in relation to tangible and intangible goods of the post-war era. In particular the course focuses on the recent crossbreeding of design with other social emerging practices, communication fluxes, environment, technological development and cultural and social identity. The course aims at deepening mankind history as the evolution of the human species, as the evolution of society and evolution of economic anthropology. It analyses the anthropology of signs as symbolical aspects (art, symbols, gestures, visual aspects, magic, religion) and how to use rituals (games, words and speeches, rites, law, costumes, magic, religion). LAYOUT AND DISPLAY TECHNIQUES The course deals with problems attached to the communication of the idea behind the project, of the project itself and the creation of professional tools such as the portfolio to be presented to the customer. The course focuses on the communication of the project idea, through visual communication, the elaboration of a storyboard, conceived as an organizational chart of the narration of the project. Moreover the use of software for the generation of multimedia tools for project communication purposes are taught. DESIGN 4 This project, along with the Thesis Laboratory of the second term, represents the final project, where the student expresses his design and analytical skills acquired during the 3-year course. The school proposes to students project topics arranged with companies, associations and institutions or based on themes developed by the students themselves. Projects with companies enable students to experience a professional assignment within a didactic context. Ke, Du - Monte dei Paschi di Siena
