3 About: Ricardo Espinosa Ricardo Espinosa R&D Engineering Manager Kimball International - Furniture Group Ricardo Espinosa, R&D engineering manager at Kimball International, one of the most recognized office furniture manufacturers in America, is a design Engineer with 20+ years experience in engineering and CAD technologies. He has extensive experience in product development, including design, engineering; manufacturing; and materials. His experience includes leading multi-location engineering teams in the consumer manufacturing industry, including, consumer electronics, hospitality, retail and office furniture. He implemented successfully several engineering systems (3D modeling, PLM and simulation). He has a bachelor s degree in design engineering from University Autonomous of Guadalajara, and is an expert in complexity reduction and continues improvement. Ricardo enjoys woodworking and painting as a hobby and time with his wife and 3 kids.. Page 3

4 What you will learn This session will demonstrate how to adapt and modify imported parts in the assembly environment to really take advantage of synchronous technology. New or experienced users will be exposed to the concepts of how synchronous modeling works with single or multiple native or imported part files in the assembly environment, considerably reducing time, error and stress. No part is an Island; all parts in an assembly are connected. Working in the assembly allows complicated edits in multiple parts without affecting fit. This session is geared towards designers and engineers who need speed and flexibility when working with multiple native and imported parts. The goals are for attendees to learn how an integrated design can allow faster revisions, maintaining the design intent while minimizing the steps and hitches in the design process. This presentation will also include live demonstrations to better show key concepts. Page 4

We have to work in isolated parts and then position then in an assembly. Relationship constrains were the only way to make them work. With Synchronous Technology we can manipulate parts and features while working in the assembly. All components are visible and editable. We can manipulate multiple features from different parts at the same time, using existing features as reference. Dimensions, measurements and constrains are not critical any more. We use all those components in several standard and special products. We moved from I-deas to Solid Edge in 2004, leaving behind hundreds of Cad files. We were able to importing and reuse them only if we use with little or no modifications. We had to create from scratch several parts that were very similar to existing parts because it was easier that import and edit. In some cases we had to hire consultants to do the job using a different Cad system because all the data was in that system. That was expensive, slow, and painful. Now with Synchronous Technology we can import and edit all kind of files and use them in the same assembly. Working in the assembly environment allow our engineers to see the whole picture, reducing error, time and frustration. Page 6

New parts should match perfectly the existing parts We need to create modified copies of the existing parts and then mfg. specs. If we create new parts in SE from scratch is going to be very hard to make them perfectly match the existing ones. The options are modify the imported files or edit the original files in the original cad system. Can we create the new parts in Synchronous Technology with perfectly matching curves? Page 10
