OCEAN INITIATIVES 2014 CONTENTS Ocean Initiatives: a description 2014 edition Educational caravans campaign Major projects They support us A report that lives up to our expectations Campaign communication Perspectives for 2015 Project partners A word from the President 2
OCEAN INITIATIVES: A DESCRIPTION PRESENTATION Ocean Initiatives is a European program that aims at raising awareness about the issue of marine litter, and it achieves this by organizing litter collections on beaches, lakes, rivers, and sea beds throughout the year. Participatory science consists of involving citizens in the collection of scientific data, through report forms. This helps to identify local environmental issues and thus guide actions to be taken. The opportunity for all citizens to participate actively and independently to protect their environment. 3
OCEAN INITIATIVES: A DESCRIPTION PRESENTATION Ocean Initiatives, Surfrider's flagship program, is split into four phases. Citizen mobilisation Participatory science Litter collection operations Raising awareness among participants Raising awareness by organizing litter collections >> Raising awareness thanks to adapted educational materials Reducing pollution caused by litter, at its source Quantifying litter using report forms 4
OCEAN INITIATIVES: A DESCRIPTION A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH Participatory science (the quantification of litter collected) provides an opportunity for citizens to participate in the development of knowledge on the issue of litter. Following this method, an environmental report was carried out using the data collected on the ground, and will be published in November This enables expertise on marine litter to be developed. The report form, an essential tool for scientific data collection 5
OCEAN INITIATIVES: A DESCRIPTION THE EVOLUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS 25th June 2014: Amendment introduced by the French National Assembly to ban single-use plastic bags by 2016 The "If you drop it on the land, it ends up in the sea" campaign River, sea and coastal caravans European Parliament vote governing the use of plastic bags An 80% decrease by 2019 Lobbying action to ban plastic bags in the EU 22,000 letters signed and submitted to the European Commissioner for the Environment Target of 50,000 participants reached New report forms to enable the quantification of litter collected Creation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive From 2010, work was carried out to implement the Marine Strategy Framework Directive The first European legislation that recognises marine litter as pollution The international "Rise Above Plastics" campaign Target of 1,000 operations reached First underwater Ocean Initiatives project Lobbying for a European legislation recognising marine litter as pollution 40,000 signatures collected for the petition, submitted to the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs First media reports on the coastline 6
2014 EDITION FIVE CLEAR FOCUS AREAS Act upon the entire water cycle, from the mountains to the sea Involve stakeholders from inland and coastal territories Expand the regional integration of European operations Develop "participatory science" Organise major projects that bring together different audiences within Europe If you drop it on the land, it ends up in the sea 7
2014 EDITION STRENGTHENED EURO-REGIONAL INTEGRATION A strong local presence alongside organisers, thanks to the broad reach of our employees and local chapters Their roles: mobilise and provide local support for European organisers Local chapters Employees Countries benefiting from Surfrider's active mobilisation - Reunion Island - Azores - Guadeloupe - Martinique 8
2014 EDITION AN ECO-DESIGNED CAMPAIGN 847 educational kits sent! Figures at 20/06 Posters made from recycled paper, using vegetable-based inks Organic cotton & vegetable inks Reusable banners made from cloth and vegetable inks 100% biodegradable bags 9
EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN CARAVANS PRESENTATION River caravans The educational caravans campaign aims, through successive mobile Ocean Initiatives, at providing a better understanding of the marine litter s journey. 3 types of caravans for the 3 origins of marine litter: land, coastal and sea. Coastal caravans Sea caravans 10
EDUCATIONAL CARAVANS CAMPAIGN RIVER CARAVANS show that the litter that is dropped inland passes through the whole water cycle and ends its frantic journey on the coastline and in the oceans. FROM THE SEINE TO THE 7TH CONTINENT In parallel with the 7th continent expedition, about 125 secondary school pupils were made aware of the upstream and downstream of the Seine (Châtillon-sur-Seine to Le Havre). The program consisted of scientific experiments and educational collections with by the crew. CARAVAN IN THE GIRONDE ESTUARY More than 150 children were mobilised along Europe's largest estuary through four educational stages: Bourg-sur-Gironde, Verdon-sur-Mer, Saint- Yzans and Saint-Vivien There are also many others, more information of which is available on our website 11
EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN CARAVANS THE COASTAL CARAVANS evoke the issue of litter discarded or washed up by the ocean on the coast. THE BASQUE COUNTRY CARAVAN Travelling from Hendaye to Anglet, passing through Biarritz, this caravan reached over 300 participants during the flagship mobilisation weekend. The program includes: cultural activities, LandART, etc. 12
EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN CARAVANS THE SEA CARAVANS symbolise litter thrown directly into the sea BELEM This year Belem and Surfrider are working together to fight against litter! Surfrider provides training to apprentice sailors, who are navigating, and organizes full educational packages (exhibitions, stands, activities, etc.) in the various ports of call. TARA Méditerranée The TARA expedition in the Mediterranean aims at studying micro-plastics and at increasing public awareness about environmental issues. The expedition will include almost thirty stops during which Surfrider will organise exhibitions, awareness stands and litter collections. The micro-plastics samples that will be collected during the expedition will be used by Surfrider for its work on litter. 13
MAJOR PROJECTS PRESENTATION Major projects are organised by our networks of volunteers, chapters and coordinators, who organise fun supplementary activities to raise public awareness on the problem of marine litter. 25 PERSPECTIVES FOR 2015 Crédit photo: jeancliclac / An evolution within society Over the past 20 years, the goal of Ocean Initiatives (IO) has been to drive a profound change within society by promoting eco-friendly behaviours among citizens and therefore fight pollution and increase awareness within Europe and its various territories. 25
PERSPECTIVES FOR 2015 Working on solutions to the problem! Since our participants are often regulars, we will adapt our educational tools by reducing content on the origins, journey and impacts of litter; instead focusing on the best behaviours to adopt in order to promote solutions to the problem. Strengthening our preventive fight against pollution even further! Relaying the message Each participant of an Ocean Initiative will be invited to become an ambassador, which will give the participant the opportunity to provide educational support to his/her own network through various means and media. 26
PERSPECTIVES FOR 2015 The origins of marine litter We will continue to work on the upstream/downstream program, i.e., to make the public understand that the pollution found in the sea and on the coast (downstream) mostly comes from higher up in the drainage basin (upstream) Participatory science This will be further strengthened, by inviting the organiser of an Ocean Initiative to quantify and qualify the litter collected. A smartphone application will also be developed to facilitate this work. 27
PARTNERS OUR PUBLIC PARTNERS Through their moral and financial support, these European institutions confirm Europe s political commitment to fight littering. 28
PARTNERS OUR PUBLIC FINANCIAL PARTNERS Most of these national, regional and departmental institutions have followed us for many years and are committed to making Ocean Initiatives dynamic and successful across all territories. 29
PARTNERS OUR PRIVATE FINANCIAL PARTNERS Through their advice, help and commitment, these companies and foundations go above and beyond in providing the financial support necessary for the campaign s success. 30
PARTNERS OUR COMMUNICATION PARTNERS Ocean Initiatives only have impact if they reach new volunteers every year. These partners offer us their expertise and use their networks to mobilise the largest number of people possible, thus contributing to raising awareness. 31
PARTNERS OUR NETWORK PARTNERS In communicating with their members and supporters, these federations and networks reach a public that is informed and concerned by the problem of marine litter. OUR SPORTS NETWORKS PARTNERS 32
PARTNERS OUR COLLABORATORS LEMONTRI Retrieving cans and plastic bottles during Ocean Initiative in Île-de- France TERRACYCLE Participants receive points in exchange for sending their litter to Terracycle. These points can then be used by participants to make financial donations to any NGO of their choice, including Surfrider.
