3 Gustavo Alonso Currently Professor at the Institute for Pervasive Computing, ETH Zurich Before that, at IBM Almaden research Centre and UC Berkeley Research interests include web services, adaptation and composition, aspect-oriented programming, etc. 3

4 Harmke de Groot Project manager and Ambient Intelligence System architect in the Digital Society program at Philips Research (AMIGO & BETSY projects) Before that she worked at the Philips Semiconductors as a project leader and system architect in the area of communication systems Contributed to the system development of Philips Bluetooth baseband solution, that to day has been sold more than 40 Million times (also Bluetooth standardization) 4

5 Carsten Magerkurth Deputy head of the "AMBIENTE- Smart Environments of the Future" research division at Fraunhofer IPSI His research interests include ubiquitous computing, user-interface design, and pervasive gaming 5

6 Pierre-Yves Saintoyant Director of EMIC, a new research and development organisation set up by Microsoft to focus on advanced technology development in EU Before that, he worked for 4 years in Microsoft Research in Cambridge managing the external research organisation, and for 12 years in technical consulting, first as a principal consultant at Coopers & Lybrand, then as the Director of Microsoft Consulting Services in France He is the author of numerous papers on information system strategies and management 6

7 Oliver Sims He has over thirty years experience in IT, and has earned international recognition in the Enterprise Architecture field Over the past ten years, he has held leading positions in several startups and small companies, and before that held a senior technical position in IBM He was also a founder member of the OMG Architecture Board, and has contributed to the development of MDA and UML2 As an author, he has several books (including coauthorship of the influential Business Component Factory) and numerous articles to his credit 7

9 Position Statements - 1 For acceptance of intelligent services, it is more important that there is a match between the perceived level of control and the wanted level of control, than that there is a match between the perceived privacy and the wanted privacy (Harmke) 9

10 Position Statement - 2 Until artificial intelligence methods become sophisticated enough to realize a context aware selfadaptation of the appropriate proactiveness of smart services, services require to be highly user configurable to range from automatic, reasoning, proactive behavior to user controlled and user initiated behavior (Carsten) 10

11 Position Statement - 3 The topic of this panel is perhaps the most important and pressing area in the whole service orientation area. It has also been the most ignored. Service orientation will do nothing for users unless we make it do so. And, in general, it is users who turn the potential value of IT into real value - but only if they are provided with the right tools (Oliver) 11

12 Position Statement - 4 Services offer a unique opportunity to dramatically improve the software tools we know today and put the user at the center and in full control of his digital lifestyle. Services are both a reality today, as illustrated by the Windows Live recent announcement, and a rich field for further research to fully achieve this dream (Pierre-Yves) 12

13 Some personal questions Does being in control mean that I have to use different tele-controls for different devices? To what extent are services invisible and imperceptible? How much do we need other (than Software/Service Engineering) disciplines (e.g. Cognitive Science, Psychology, Linguistics)? How many Jini like devices are really manufactured? To what extent human issues are really taken into consideration? What about people with special needs? How can we reconcile personalisation of services with security and privacy? How much autonomy and proactiveness does/should our digital environment support? 13
