1 Studies in Computational Intelligence Volume 749 Series editor Janusz Kacprzyk, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland
2 The series Studies in Computational Intelligence (SCI) publishes new developments and advances in the various areas of computational intelligence quickly and with a high quality. The intent is to cover the theory, applications, and design methods of computational intelligence, as embedded in the fields of engineering, computer science, physics and life sciences, as well as the methodologies behind them. The series contains monographs, lecture notes and edited volumes in computational intelligence spanning the areas of neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, cellular automata, self-organizing systems, soft computing, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems. Of particular value to both the contributors and the readership are the short publication timeframe and the world-wide distribution, which enable both wide and rapid dissemination of research output. 5 Preface We describe in this book recent advances in the fuzzy logic-based augmentation of neural networks and in optimization algorithms and their application in areas such as, to just mention a few, intelligent control and robotics, pattern recognition, medical diagnosis, time series prediction and optimization of complex problems and system. The book is organized in seven main parts which contain groups of papers focused on a similar subject. The first part consists of papers in which the main theme is the use of type-2 fuzzy logic in meta-heuristics. It basically consists of papers that propose new concepts and algorithms based on the type-2 fuzzy sets for dynamic parameter adaptation in meta-heuristics. The second part contains papers which are mainly concerned with the theory and applications of neural networks. It includes basically papers dealing with new concepts and algorithms in neural networks. The second part also contains papers describing applications of neural networks in diverse areas, such as the time series prediction and pattern recognition. The third part contains papers that present the theory and practice of meta-heuristics in different areas of application. The fourth part presents diverse applications of fuzzy logic in the control area which can be considered to be intelligent controllers. The fifth part contains papers describing applications of fuzzy logic in diverse areas such as the time series prediction and pattern recognition. The sixth part includes papers describing new optimization and evolutionary algorithms and their applications in different areas. Finally, the seventh part contains papers that present the design and application of different hybrid intelligent systems. In the first part of the book with five papers, we are concerned with theoretical aspects and applications of the type-2 fuzzy logic in meta-heuristics which basically consists of papers that propose new concepts and algorithms based on the type-2 fuzzy logic for dynamic parameter adaptation in meta-heuristics. The aim of using the type-2 fuzzy logic is to provide a better uncertainty management in the process of searching for an optimal solution to a problem considered. In the second part dealing with the theory and applications of neural networks, there are four papers that describe different contributions which propose new models, concepts and algorithms centred on the neural networks. The aim of using v
6 vi Preface the neural networks is to provide learning and adaptive capabilities to intelligent systems. There are also papers that describe different contributions on the application of these kinds of neural models to solve complex real-world problems, such as the time series prediction and pattern recognition. In the third part, devoted to the theory and practice of meta-heuristics in different areas of application, there are five papers that describe different contributions that propose new models and concepts which are also applied in diverse areas of applications. The nature-inspired methods include variations of different methods as well as new nature-inspired paradigms. In the fourth part, diverse applications of fuzzy logic in the control area, which can be considered intelligent controllers, are presented in five papers that describe different contributions on the application of these kinds of fuzzy systems to solve complex real-world control problems, such as in robotics. In the fifth part, on applications of fuzzy logic, there are six papers that describe different contributions on the application of these kinds of fuzzy logic models to solve complex real-world problems exemplified by the time series prediction, medical diagnosis, fuzzy control and pattern recognition. In the sixth part, focused on the optimization, there are five papers that describe different contributions which propose new models, concepts and algorithms for the optimization inspired by different paradigms. The aim of using these algorithms is to provide general optimization methods and solution to some real-world problem in areas such as scheduling, planning and project portfolios. In the seventh part, there are eight papers that present the nature-inspired design and applications of different hybrid intelligent systems. There are also papers that describe different contributions to the application of these kinds of hybrid intelligent systems to solve complex real-world problems such as the time series prediction, medical diagnosis and pattern recognition. In conclusion, the edited book comprises papers on diverse aspects of fuzzy logic, neural networks and nature-inspired optimization meta-heuristics and their application in various areas exemplified by intelligent control and robotics, pattern recognition, time series prediction and optimization of complex problems. There are theoretical aspects as well as application papers. We wish to thank the authors for their excellent and inspiring contributions and anonymous peer reviewers whose insight and suggestions have helped a lot to improve the contributions. And last but not least, we wish to thank Dr. Tom Ditzinger, Dr. Leontina di Cecco and Mr. Holger Schaepe for their dedication and help to implement and finish this large and ambitious publication project.
