3 Context. Fabriken is part of a larger venue (STPLN) driven by an NGO as a platform for citizens experimentation. STPLN is located in the former harbour area in Malmö in a building owned by the city of Malmö. The aim was to explore how a fabrication space could be integrated in such a venue.

4 The project. The projectc consisted in a two years collaboration between the NGO and the researchers of the DESIS Lab for the establishment and running of Fabriken.

5 The design process. It started with a co-design phase for the designing of the premises. It then developed in a collaboration in the running of the space that entailed both organizing and carrying out events as well as establishing more long-term initiatives and collaborations with in-house projects.

6 Governance and Policy Making Commons The NGO as a partner Fabriken is a commons-based organization meaning that users have been directly involved in its running and decision making according to different models. It is a kind of commons which is characterized by a non-consensus model (participants do not necessary share a common goal nor understanding of the space) with transient participation (who is participating changes in time). This led to a series of challenges in relation to the governance of the space, since, traditionally, commons present consensus-based governance with stable participation. In order to support sharing and collaboration in Fabriken, a central role has been played by the NGO running the premises who has worked as a partner (Orsi 2005) supporting participants sharing and collaboration as well as guarding the commons.

Moreover the NGO running the space provides support to initiatives with coaching, help in writing funding applications and contacts. Thus the organization plays a strategic role in connecting what Murray et al. (2010) defined the bees (grass-root initiatives) with the trees (more established actors)

8 Social Interactions and Relations Commons Co-ownership The sharing of space and tools, the collaborative management of the space foster the emergence of social relationships between participants. The sense of co-ownership that this entails, favours long-term commitment.

Such an engagement increases participants awareness of production processes and may lead to an increased responsibility over production processes. Moreover, Fabriken has been a platform where to experiment with different forms of located production, meaning that activities and initiatives in the space have explored how and what it might make sense to produce on a local scale in the context of Malmö.

This project provided the opportunity to explore the role of the designer in the making rather than in the prototyping or imaging of social innovation, meaning that it entailed the involvement of

10 This project provided the opportunity to explore the role of the designer in the making rather than in the prototyping or imaging of social innovation, meaning that it entailed the involvement of designers in the setting up and management of a social innovation initiative. Such an experience has been particularly giving in order to further develop understandings and ideas in relation to the designer role in social innovation. Particularly two features have played a central role, the first one has been the long-term commitment which has allowed to engage in the making. The second one is infrastructuring which entails the ability of aligning with diverse actors and their existing initiatives and interests, in order for the making to thrive. 11 Job Creation Broad value production In Fabriken leisure and professional activities overlap which entails that diverse kinds of value are produced. There are making initiatives aiming to become a business and making activities aiming at learning or meeting other people. Thus the space works as a sort of space in between where production for the market, production as way of acquiring skills and production as a social activity overlap. This means that production processes generate multiple values and thus work towards a notion of growth and sustainability that includes social aspects and not just economic ones.
