2 3D Printing is it relevant to us! Rapid prototyping technology might not be appropriate in a traditional academic library. Nevertheless, throughout the discovery process and fundamental to our proposal we recognised that our potential support of such tools might well be a good fit for a knowledge centre and campus hub of research and learning communities. Support of related technologies is not uncommon in the learning or research commons of the modern academic library. -Educause.edu

4 Library spaces Libraries and library professionals face multiple challenges in meeting user needs in the digital era. Where the higher learning institute libraries are still lagging behind to provide to various users spaces in their libraries. Tinker space & 3D printers in libraries is one of the emerging trend in the Indian higher learning resource centres, "It's actually part of a larger trend...where once we thought of libraries as places where we had things for people, now we really do things for people - or do things with people."
5 The Idea The Tinker Space has been set up with the help of InnoYuMe, a startup lead by students of PGP , Saumya Mathur and Nikhil Menon with the support of Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), IIMA. The InnoYuMe team set about a fact finding mission to understand the actual ground realities, team spent a whole month, interacting with the community members, including the students, faculty, staff and their families. They ran surveys, as it turned out, close to 80% of sample set had members interested to work in the lab, and surprisingly, most of them wanted to Tinker and create as a hobby instead of as compulsory course work.
6 Tinker Space The Vikram Sarabhai Library "Tinker Space" is dedicated to promote creative thinking and conversion of ideas into physical products. The space can be used by the IIMA community to design and create new products through a 3D printer. The Tinker Space has a 3D scanner and a small electronics lab with basic equipment including Arduino Uno original, Raspberry Pi original, breadboard, soldering gun, DC motor, SD card module, Arduino bluetooth module, IT sensor, multi-meter, LEDs, etc.

8 What is 3D Printing? This is what we usually have in mind when we think about printers wanted to print objects with width, length, height. But 3D printers make what we imagine. 3D printing involves adding the materials to the objects layer by layer.
9 How it works The process of transforming 3D printing filament into a 3D model (Fused deposition modeling) 1. The filament is fed into the FDM 3D printer. 2. The thermoplastic is heated past their glass transition temperature inside the hot end. 3. The filament is extruded and deposited by an extrusion head onto a build platform where it cools. 4. The process is continuous, building up layers to create the model.
10 3D Modeling 3D printable models may be created with a computer-aided design (CAD) package, via a 3D scanner, or by a plain digital camera and photogrammetry software. 3D printed models created with CAD result in reduced errors and can be corrected before printing, allowing verification in the design of the object before it is printed.
11 STL (STereoLithography) file Most 3D printers require you to have an STL (STereoLithography) file to print. You can design your object in any 3D modeling software, such as AutoCAD or any of the free software programs shown below. You can also use or modify a pre-existing file from a design library.

14 3D Printing Startups ideas To what degree is this decision influenced by a startup level of risk tolerance, the complexity of its products, or its preference for incremental versus radical innovations. 3D printing technology has gone from a cutting-edge novelty to a growing and popular industry for new startups. Entrepreneurs and consumers alike can use 3D printers to create useful products ranging from jewelry and light fixtures to replicas of human tissue.

As professionals, librarians constantly monitor policies to adapt to new information formats and user interactions and services. Librarians should not wait to begin a 3-D printing space for some ideal time in the future when all the problems will be solved. Start now, with your goal and some policies that will indeed progress. The rest will fall into place.
