IdenFfying pajerns of design and innovafon that are common to various contexts and applying them within a product category -- or even across product categories is a cognifve strategy that enjoys an advantage over processing each creafve opportunity in isolafon from previous ideafon - We ll introduce the concept of systemafc innovafon and idenffy the various genres of systemafc techniques - We ll explore the history and the potenfal advantages / disadvantages of systemafc approaches to innovafon and we ll compare the theory to our pracfcal experiences - We'll ponder a rather extreme nofon in which systemafc innovafon might amplify itself by applying itself to itself (invoking the mathemafcal / computafonal concept of recursion) - We ll review a pracfcal applicafon of a rather remarkable disrupfon in the user experience domain that resulted from a systemafc approach 2
3 What is Systema(c Innova(on? Doug Engelbart didn't "invent" the mouse he "discovered" it. 3
4 What is Systema(c Innova(on? Doug Engelbart didn't "invent" the mouse he "discovered" it. Q. How did you happen to invent the mouse? Did you simply wake up one day and say, today I shall invent the mouse? A. The actual inven@on of the mouse was the result of analyzing the various characteris@cs of other poin@ng / input devices. Much as the Periodic Table of the Elements has characteris@cs that define groups along rows and columns, we laid out a grid of exis@ng devices. And just as the periodic table s rules have led to the discovery of certain previously unknown elements, this grid ul@mately defined the desirable characteris@cs of a device that didn t exist. That device was the mouse. 4
