4 PAGE 4 TE REO CONVENOR S MESSAGE: Tena koutou katoa and a very Happy New Year 2014 to all, It has been a busy Christmas season and a fast move into the New Year with February upon us and with autumn fast approaching. I recently saw a licence plate of a vehicle in Auckland that read Genealogy, I seek out dead people, now we all know what this means, however our actual search is of those loved ones as well as elusive ancestors that we seek; in order to knit together our lines of descent and to bring those ancestors home, so to speak, into IMPORTANT NOTICES PLEASE READ! Kia mau koe ki nga kupu o ou tupuna = the fold of our own respective families. Though rather blunt an interesting licence plate that certainly makes one think. Our tribal development is growing with marae, hapu and iwi with families eager to research and to hunt out those elusive ancestors. And it is to this end that the Māori Interest Group will continue to grow with the support of our Māori and non Māori families as we lead up to Conference in Wellington in May and where we are looking forward to working with our respective hapu and iwi of Wellington and the greater area. Our next report should reflect a varied format for Māori and non Māori genealogical/whakapapa research. Nga mihi nui kia koutou Owen ORMSBY Convenor Māori Interest Group NZSG Inc February 2014

7 TE REO PAGE 7 IS YOUR TR LATE? It Could Be But Don t Panic! As my dear granny ADDISON always use to say; All good things come to those who wait. Te Reo will always be available online for our members to read well before the hardcopy is even with the printers! Printing times may also vary, depending on the printer s prior contractual commitments. Please consider that the hardcopies of the newsletter are printed in and posted from Australia to our Secretary in Wellington for envelope stuffing and I can assure you, Brenda is absolutely meticulous in getting the hardcopies back in the post and out to our hardcopy members as soon as she possibly can. Also remember that the newsletter is compiled on a voluntary basis, we are not a commercial enterprise, nor do we have a paid staff no editorial staff for that matter. I can assure you, you will always receive the four (4) issues per year [February, May, August & November] for your subscription, even if an issue is a little late occasionally... There is also no guarantee-of-expectation for the newsletter to be specifically available within the issue month [Feb, May, Aug & Dec], as the editor reserves the right to withhold any issue to accommodate any event, especially towards the end of the printing month. Hopefully this will allay some concerns our members have expressed recently and remember; Don t Panic Te Reo Hardcopies will always get there eventually! 10 PAGE 10 TE REO CAN YOU HELP YOUR GROUP? The Māori Interest Group is again pleased to have been invited to the Thames Family History Expo on Saturday 17 th May And on this regard we need more people to help manage our table there are members of our group whom have regularly attended the Thames Expo but because of the demands on them, they still have not had the opportunity to leave our stand and explore the event for themselves or even visit The Treasury. Even if you do not feel confident in your own Whakapapa knowledge you can still help out by simply taking down the contact details of any interested patrons and our more experienced team can follow up. So if you are able, please consider giving just a couple of hours to give our regular team a short break. Please contact Brenda at bjoyce@xtra.co.nz if you are able to help. BM/TR Noema 13 Please Note: The correct address for Richard VALLANCE (see page 8) is : vallance_r@xtra.co.nz Wharenui, Thames Taipari's house, Thames
11 TE REO PAGE 11 HOTERENE TAIPARI Hoterene Taipari was a well known figure in the Thames district until the year of his death, He was a leading chief of the Ngati-maru and his home "Pukerahui" was situated on the rise between the Hape Creek and Grey Street, Thames, now the site of many State houses. About the year 1835 he and other Thames Maoris made a voyage to the Bay of Island to bring home some who had been made prisoners when Hongi Hika attacked the Totara Pa in It was when on this visit that his son Wirope Hoterene Taipari was born. The names Wirope and Hoterene were adopted in more modern times "Wirope" being the Maori way of saying "Willoughby" and "Hoterene" for Shortland. These Taiparis apparently were proud to call themselves after Willoughby Shortland. Both these chiefs; father and son were of great help to James Mackay from 1864 till 1867 in inducing their people to allow gold mining in the Thames district NOTES BY THE LATE W. T. HAMMOND, M.B.E. Ohinemuri Regional History Journal 26, November Hotereni Taipari of the Ngati Maru. c Father of Wirope Hotereni Taipari and Grandfather of Erueni Taipari. "Ngati Maru chief Hoterene Taipari expressed the Māori attitude when he said in a speech at Parawai that the Marutuahu were tired of war; they wanted all tribes and all races to live in peace together, as one family. If the pakeha met with opposition when seeking timber or mining rights it was only over details: the over-ruling Māori spirit was one of co-operation" (1) (1) Nolan, Tony; Historic Gold Trails of the Coromandel, 1977 AW Reed, ISBN The marae of Ngati Maru [Hauraki] today is Matai Whetu. It is located at Kopu on the southern outskirts of Thames. The Kirikiri Native School was built upon this place in 1878, and when it closed in 1973 the trustees consented to the Matai Whetu block becoming a Māori reserve for a marae for the benefit of Ngati Maru, Ngati Whanaunga and their related sub tribes of Ngati Hauauru and Ngati Te Aute. Thames is an important gold mining area. Lots to do and research in Thames, specially if your whanau come from there.

18 PAGE 18 TE REO CAN YOU HELP? INFORMATION WANTED CONTACT SOUGHT *Portrait of Kawana Hunia Te Hakeke, c1870 s In tracing my ancestry I find I have Māori connections to the Rangitikei area of Bulls. Much of what I have gathered over the years is still confusing to me. I am society member number 2266, so have been looking for some time. Perhaps you could suggest where I should look for my Māori folk. I have a baptism certificate from Australia dated 1837 where my gtgt grandfather Thomas STICKLE was baptized. His parents were given as Eihei a New Zealander and Thomas STICKLE a Scotsman. I understand ihi is a female name of the Raukawa. Thomas STICKLE had several other children but the mothers name was given as Turikatuku. I know more about her as she was reputed to be the daughter of the Ngati Apa Paramount Chief Te Hakeke, several of their children married into the RETTER, ROACH & PROCTOR families. I know RETTER families, went to school with them. Thomas STICKLE was a Mariner; he traded between Wellington and Sydney in the 1830s, his boat the 265t Barque Louisa and is well documented. His son also Thomas was born on board the boat while moored at Kapiti in It was this Thomas eldest child Anna who in 1882 married McLACHLAN, these becoming my gt grandparents. Eihei may well be Raukawa as they were in that area as an ally to the Ngati Toa at that time. I have read up on Te Hakeke who signed the Waitangi treaty on behalf of his tribe, his son Kawana Hunia is also well documented. My son is very interested in his Māori heritage, so much so he is learning the Reo and is quite proficient at wood carving. He married a part Māori girl, their latest child 6weeks old, named him Te Ahuru O Te Rangi McLACHLAN. Such is his affection for his Māori heritage. Would the group be able to advise me on where to go from here? I would like to know just who Eihei was, which tribe she may have been from. It has been suggested it was common to have a Māori woman offered to trading ship mariners, and most likely a captured one (Slave) I just don t know. (Continued on page 20)
