CarBee-Sharp Congratulations on your purchase of the new CarBee-Sharp multi-head pocket carbide sharpener. CarBee-Sharp is the most convenient sharpener you will ever own. CarBee-Sharp is so small and unobtrusive in the pocket that you will find yourself taking it along most everywhere you go. Small enough to carry to work or take along in the car. Light enough to travel with you when biking, hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. Compact enough that it doesn t steal valuable space in your tool kit, back pack or bicycle pouch. CarBee-Sharp sharpens all sorts of knives, garden implements, scissors, tools, etc. Use it for touching up your kitchen knives, pocket knives, scissors or poultry shears. Out in the garden you can restore a good edge to axes, secateurs, hoes, spades, scythes, etc. Sharpen draw knives, chisels, scrapers and other professional tools in your workshop. CarBee-Sharp is always used dry. The carbide multi-head of the CarBee-Sharp is specially designed to sharpen, finish and polish without any lubricants or cutting fluids. No oil or water is ever needed to obtain excellent results. You can restore a keen cutting edge to knives and tools in less than five minutes and there is never any messy clean up. Construction Your CarBee-Sharp consists of a special multi-profile carbide head permanently affixed to a body of high-impact injection-molded plastic and protected by the unique Securi- Klip cap. Multi-Profile Carbide Head The multi-profile carbide head is made of precision-extruded sintered carbide with ground and finished faces to allow you to sharpen, refine and polish a whole range of knives, tools and implements.

Sharpening is performed with either of the two precision-formed V-profiles. Using the edge of these V-profiles as cutters the CarBee-Sharp shaves excess metal from the tool being sharpened. Edge Refining of a sharpened edge is effected with the special flat, grooved surface with which any roughness or imperfections left by the passage of the V-profiles are polished away. Burnishing or turning of edges where desired (for scrapers and similar tools) is performed with either of the two round profiles located on the sides of the multi-profile head.

In addition to the three profiles listed above, the hollow found between the V-profiles can be used to sharpen small, pointed objects such as fish hooks. Plastic Handle The multi-profile carbide head is permanently affixed to the plastic handle of the CarBee- Sharp. The handle is appropriately shaped to promote a good grip and incorporates a semi-hilt guard to help protect your hand from accidental cuts or wounds during sharpening. Securi-Klip The Securi-Klip protects the multi-profile carbide head from damage when the CarBee- Sharp is not in use. The Securi-Klip also allows your CarBee-Sharp to be carried safely in shirt- or pants pocket.

Moreover, the Securi-Klip is designed to snap securely onto the end of the CarBee- Sharp, extending the length of the handle, thus promoting better hand control and safer sharpening operations and is so designed that it will not easily come off. It is recommended that you never use your CarBee-Sharp without the Securi-Klip snapped onto the rear of the handle. The Securi-Klip is so designed that a special technique is recommended in order to remove it. This is accomplished by grasping the handle of the CarBee-Sharp in one hand and the Securi-Klip in the other and then simultaneously snapping the two parts down and away from each other with a breaking action along a plane parallel with the wider axis of the handle. (see illustration) For some sharpening tasks on oddly-shaped tools or those that have extreme angles it is suggested that the Securi-Klip be attached to the rear of the handle so that its pocket tongue is on the opposite side of the carbide head that you are using.

Sharpening The objective in using your CarBee-Sharp is to remove superfluous material from the blunt edge of a blade in order to restore sharpness. You can see in this cut-away illustration those portions of a blunt knife that will be shaved away by the CarBee-Sharp to restore a sharp edge. Unlike some sharpening systems with pre-set angles and stones, CarBee-Sharp allows you the control to follow the original factory bevel angles of whatever knife or tool you are sharpening. Sharpening Angles You will want to be aware of two important angles when using your CarBee-Sharp. The first angle of importance will be the major angle of the entire length of the CarBee- Sharp relative to edge geometry of the blade being sharpened. This angle should be equal to the cutting angle that already exists on the blade of the tool being sharpened. Secondly and equally important is the angle of attack at which the CarBee-Sharp s cutting edge meets the blade as you stroke it along the edge of the tool you are sharpening. Normally, one will want to maintain a 10 to 20 degree angle of attack of the CarBee-Sharp relative to the direction in which the CarBee-Sharp is moving in order that the V-edge of the multi-profile carbide head meets the steel of the tool to be sharpened at the optimum angle. This will ensure that the CarBee-Sharp can give the best possible cut and finish.

We advise using moderate pressure. You will begin to see (and feel) when the CarBee- Sharp is removing metal properly and you will soon learn to adjust the amount of applied pressure to suit the type of metal you are working on. Slow and precise movements will produce better results. Maintain the correct angles and stroke the CarBee-Sharp smoothly and repeatedly along alternate sides of the edge until the desired sharpness is obtained. Direction of Cut Another important consideration will be whether you hold the CarBee-Sharp from above or below the edge being sharpened. Usually, one can hold the CarBee-Sharp from below as shown at A, but when the angle of the edge being sharpened is very acute, the CarBee-Sharp will have to be applied to the edge from above as shown at B. The CarBee-Sharp can be used by stroking it along the edge in either a direction away from you or else towards you and it will work equally well in both directions. A note of caution would be that we recommend that one should sharpen the point of a knife in such a way that the direction of the CarBee-Sharp is towards and off of the point. In this way

one avoids potential puncture wounds. Conversely, when sharpening the heel of the knife, the cutting action of the CarBee- Sharp should be towards that end of the knife, thus ensuring the you can bring a clean, sharpened edge all the way back to the knife handle. When approaching either extreme end of a knife blade, reduce the pressure slightly as you bring the cutting action of the CarBee-Sharp to a halt. Important: 1) Do be aware that applying excessive pressure will not speed up the sharpening process and can even lead to deforming or damaging the edge you are working on. Slow and precise movements will produce the best results. 2) Never slap the multi-carbide head of the CarBee-Sharp against the edges being sharpened. Doing so can result in damage either to the edge of the tool being sharpened and can also result in nicks or chips in the carbide of the CarBee-Sharp. 3) Avoid using the CarBee-Sharp on tool edges which are significantly chipped, damaged or cracked. The shock of hitting such imperfections during a sharpening stroke can damage the multi-profile carbide head. If you do decide to use the CarBee-Sharp on such damaged edges, exercise extreme care when passing the CarBee-Sharp over the damaged areas. Edge Refining Once the initial sharpening is completed, turn your CarBee-Sharp over and use the flat, grooved side of the multi-profile head to refine your sharpened edge. Maintain the same major angle of the CarBee-Sharp relative to the tool edge which you used during sharpening, but this time make sure that there is no angle of attack so that

the flat, grooved edge refining face remains in full contact with the tool edge. Any particles that still remain along the blade-edge following the edge refining can be removed by stroking the blade lightly on a scrap of wood as pictured, as though you were actually trying to saw through the scrap piece. The result will be the removal of the last imperfections and a perfectly smooth edge. The difference in edge quality is shown in the artist s close-up renderings in the illustration. Compare the just sharpened edge at A with the final, refined edge at B. Burnishing The round profiles can be used for finishing and smoothing serrations and microserrations on a sharpened edge in those cases where the regular, grooved finishing side of the CarBee-Sharp can not be brought to bear. In this case the movement of the CarBee- Sharp would be a short up-and-down stroke in the serrations. An example of this would be the finishing of the serrations of a bread knife.

These round profiles are also excellent for use on scrapers and similar tools for burnishing or rounding-over operations and may also be used in a back-and-forth manner to refine the insides of small scooped cutters, gouges or chisels. Finally, these round profiles are excellent for many kinds of deburring operations. Note: We feel that the above recommended procedures for sharpening, edge refining and burnishing will yield the best results from your CarBee-Sharp. However we realize that some owners may develop their own preferred style of using the CarBee-Sharp for sharpening, finishing or burnishing the edges of tools, so feel free to alter our suggested techniques. Fishhooks Fishhooks can sharpened by holding the CarBee-Sharp in a fixed position and rubbing the point of the fishhook back and forth on the hollowed portion between the two V- cutters.

Maintaining the CarBee-Sharp The special carbide head of your CarBee-Sharp will give long service but, when desired, can itself be resharpened by rubbing both flat sides of the carbide head on a fine diamond hone. When performing this sharpening operation on the carbide head remember to keep the diamond hone wetted with a small amount of water and apply pressure in such a way that the carbide head always remains down flat and in full contact with the surface of the diamond hone. The best method for this is to place the diamond hone on a solid backing surface such as the edge of a table top or bench and work the CarBee-Sharp down against it. If there is any damage to the V-profiles, then the sharpening process should be continued until the edges are once again free of nicks or chips. Excessive rehoning is not necessary nor desirable. Safety Notes: Be especially careful hold your hands in safe positions when sharpening dangerous tools. Always maintain a good, slip-free hold on both the CarBee-Sharp as well as the tool you are sharpening. In addition, make sure that you are standing or sitting in a secure posture so as to avoid slipping or unexpected movements when performing any operations with the CarBee-Sharp. Never use the CarBee-Sharp if the multi-profile carbide head is has for any reason become significantly damaged, broken or loose. Never forget to wear proper eye protection when sharpening tools with brittle edges.
