Class 3: Data Entry Skills Presenter: Carol Hansen Devine, M.A. Ed. Family History Consultant Desert Hills Ward, West Richland, WA Recorded 18 Nov 2016 Taming the FamilySearch Goliath
Class 2 covered getting a user name and password to Family Tree, an orientation to the person page, and the process of connecting your ancestor to existing data. Class 3 (this class), including: 1. Add a name, with nickname and spelling variations 2. Add a real or approximate date 3. Add a definite or best guess location
Why are data entry standards important? Incorrectly entered data results in duplicate people
and duplicate people have duplicate families
Duplicate people result in duplicated family ordinances
Vital Info section: name given at birth (male or female) Woman s maiden surname Jr or MD Infant daughter
Other Info section: nicknames
Other Info section: name and spelling variations Adding a woman s married name here is helpful in finding death and burial records. Watch for alternate spellings found in records. Add them here to help Family Tree discover possible duplicates.
Enter Challenging Names! 1. Harry Junior Hansen, called Junior as a child 2. Ezekiel Morgan Wilson known to friends as Zeke 3. Emmett Devine sometimes spelled Divine 4. Infant daughter of John & Mary Jensen, who died as a baby. 5. Melissa Marie Hendricks, whose gravestone reads Melissa Marie Larrison. 6. Megan Grace Masters, who married and later divorced Jens Joneson. 7. John Jefferson s wife, Patience, maiden surname undiscovered. 8. Mrs. Jenny Kitchell, who is now marrying Jason Smith.
Add and standardize a date Type Then, accept* the standard ( standardize it ) * From the offered dropdown list, click the matching item FmSrch recognizes. When the Standard line turns green, FmSrch is ready to use the data you entered.
Partial or Best Guess Date Helps us find vital records Use about, before or after
Entering Dates! 1. Born May 13, Died in October Born about two years before grandpa died in When married? First child was born Missy s died before her Dad s will was written in Jeremy s died sometime after certifying his sister Ruth s age so she could marry in Estimated 2 nd marriage date? Jasper s first wife died in childbirth in Jasper kept the 6 little kids at home and remarried.
Add and standardize a place When birth location is unknown, name of country is sufficient to reserve ordinances
Enter & standardize a Best Guess Place Step 1: Enter place with possibly, or probably. From the bottom of the offered dropdown list choose None of the above. Helps us find vital records Step 2: Click click here Then, from the offered dropdown list, choose the closest available option.
Entering Places! 1. Born in Richland, Benton County, WA 2. Born in Medford, Nova Scotia 3. Born somewhere in Pennsylvania 4. Where married? First child was born in Umatilla County, Oregon. 5. Where born? Her next younger and older siblings were born in Jenkins County, Georgia. 6. Where died? 86 yrs. old in the 1940 US Census for Washoe County, Nevada. 7. Where born? Marriage record says of Lockhart Texas
Covered in Class 3 1. In FamilySearch, entering data correctly helps us discover duplicate people, find vital records, and avoid repeating family ordinances. 2. In the Person Page, add: Person s name at birth in Vital Info section Alternate names, nicknames & spelling variations in Other Info section 3. How to enter and standardize: Dates, whether known or estimated Locations, whether real or best guess Homework Assignment Before beginning Class 4, edit incorrectly entered names, dates and places you find in at least 5 person pages in Family Tree. Be sure to standardize the dates and locations.
Coming in Class 4 Bring the Person Page to life by adding: A cameo portrait A scanned group photograph A story, with attached photo A life sketch Please join us!
