17 Commencemen By Elizabeh Fonaine Hildebrand 92 Oudoors or indoors? Those words were undoubedly on Tom Williamson s mind he morning of he 2008 Commencemen. Have fun: he fun ha comes from a sense of accomplishmen, a sense of elaion, Wolk said. My bes advice is be lucky. I s he key o having fun and he key o working wih good people, bu i s hard o be lucky wihou aking risks. I s beer o regre he hings you did han he hings you didn do. Williamson, reiring as Wesminser s 13h presiden, received an honorary docor of public service degree. He expressed graiude o hose who shared he honor: My wife, Jean, who has helped me in so many ways; he Trusees; he remarkable faculy and saff; and he Class of I is my honor o be graduaing wih you who have made his a beer place by your presence here, he said. 20 A differen kind of McCarhyism Respeced professor clinches faculy award By Elizabeh Fonaine Hildebrand 92 While Sco Ferguson 98 was ouring college campuses during his senior year of high school in 1993, he made an imprompu sop a Wesminser one weekend. Wesminser wasn on his shor lis of schools; in fac, i wasn even a consideraion. Bu by he end of he day, Wesminser was his op choice. Wha happened during he course of his visi? He bumped ino Parick McCarhy, his year s Disinguished Faculy Award recipien. McCarhy jus happened o be in his office ha weekend. He offered Ferguson a our of Hoy and he biology deparmen, gave Ferguson s moher a jar of frui flies o share wih her hird-grade class, and, ulimaely, alered he course of Ferguson s life. Lile did I know ha his experience would come full circle 12 years laer when I chose o sudy frui fly developmen during my pos-docoral fellowship, said Ferguson, who oday is a pos-docoral fellow a he Howard Hughes Medical Insiue of Princeon Universiy. Ferguson is one of dozens of former sudens and ohers who recommended McCarhy, who reired in May afer 38 years on Wesminser s faculy, for he honor. His was one of 15 leers of recommendaion including one wih an aached documen feauring 21 addiional signaures delivered o Dean of he College Dr. Jesse Mann, urging McCarhy s selecion. The words menor, friend, enhusiasic, and inspiring were used ime and again. Their sories, and hundreds of ohers unold by hose who have benefied from an associaion wih McCarhy, underscore he reired professor s view of a life well lived. According o McCarhy, living a good life is largely based on he people you mee along he way. Those he me along he way would no doub agree. He has ouched he lives of a remendous number of sudens by being a grea eacher, a caring and knowledgeable adviser, a research menor, and in many cases, a rused friend, wroe Dr. Joe Balczon, chair of he Deparmen of Biology. Sudens love him, and he loves hem in reurn. He nurures hem wih he same care ha he nurured his own children. For McCarhy, i has been his sudens, colleagues, and he good friends he s made a Wesminser ha have kep him here and kep him happy all hese years. He remembers sudens from long ago. I s no jus he names McCarhy recalls as if reading from some aged ledger; he recouns individual sories and is genuinely proud o call many of his former sudens friends. This probably wouldn have happened, McCarhy believes, if he had gone a differen roue and bypassed Wesminser. 18

21 While pursuing his Ph.D. a Wayne Sae Universiy in Deroi in he lae 1960s, McCarhy oversaw one of he deparmen s inroducory biology labs. Wih 18 secions of laboraories a week and 50 undergraduaes per lab, he was in conac wih nearly 900 sudens. I was jus mass producion, McCarhy said. I go o know only a few sudens here. Here you ge o know almos every one of your sudens and wih some of hem, you make lifelong friendships. Tha wouldn have happened in Deroi, he said. McCarhy lef Deroi for New Wilmingon in 1970 when he joined he Wesminser faculy as he Deparmen of Biology s firs professor specifically rained in geneic research. He and his wife, Pa, immediaely conneced wih New Wilmingon; rural Lawrence Couny jus fel more naural o McCarhy, who, as a boy, spen his days geing his hands diry by playing in he woods in his small homeown of Cadillac, Mich. I was here ha a high school science eacher showed him ha he could coninue o ge his hands diry in he field of biology. I always hough I waned o become a docor, McCarhy said. I hink ha because I said ha quie ofen, my parens encouraged i. I wasn unil he was an undergraduae suden sudying unified science a Wayne Sae, however, ha he discovered a passion for geneics. I had a couple of wonderful professors who jus inspired me, he said. I knew by my senior year ha I would insead go on o ge my maser s and Ph.D. As ime wore on, however, McCarhy found eaching ohers abou his passion o be his rue calling. I hink I discovered I liked he eaching beer han I did he research, he said. I hink ha in eaching here has o be a genuine love for wha hey re doing and he subjec area. I ve been a biologis forever and I m sill enhusiasic abou biology oday, he said. Tha enhusiasm ha has o be here, I hink, o be a good eacher. If you don have ha, I don know how you would convey enhusiasm for he subjec o he sudens. You have o feel so passionae abou i ha you wan o share i wih ohers. Many recall McCarhy s enhusiasm in and ou of he classroom. One alumna from he Class of 2006 recouned her firs meeing wih him during firs-year orienaion when she menioned her ineres in aending veerinary school. Wihou hesiaion, he pulled ou a noepad and pen and immediaely sared planning and organizing wha my schedule would look like over he nex hree years. Having sudens who are ineresed in learning and by and large our sudens a Wesminser are genuinely ineresed in academics only helps in he educaion of he sudens, he said. I s a wo-way sree: I m ineresed and passionae abou he subjec and hey ve go a pure or moivaed ineres, he said. Tha combinaion of hings makes for effecive eaching. I also helps, McCarhy said, o be passionae abou a subjec ha is forever changing. In geneics and molecular biology, here is so much happening all he ime, said McCarhy, who poins ou ha geneics and molecular biology have been acceleraing ever since 1953 when James Wason and Francis Crick discovered he srucure of deoxyribonucleic acid beer known as DNA. I hink from ha ime on, i has jus been an explosion of knowledge and useful applicaions coming ou of wha some call he DNA Biology Age, he said. There is always somehing new. Always. As McCarhy shared his kind of passion in he classroom, he was also able o coninue research by paricipaing in approximaely 30 honors research projecs over he years. All of hose were prey good research on he pars of he sudens, he said. I s been very enjoyable and rewarding o see he sudens develop and learn wha research is all abou and know ha many of hese sudens have a naural inclinaion and curiosiy abou he subjec. Alhough he now carries he ile of professor emerius and can enjoy he pleasures ha come wih reiremen, McCarhy s own naural curiosiy oward biology and his love of eaching won keep him sill for long. He s already signed as an adjunc for he fall 2008 semeser, an arrangemen ha will be welcomed by sudens and colleagues alike. (Hildebrand is he edior of Wesminser Magazine.) 22 Ino Africa Wesminser ravelers immersed in Malawian culure By Elizabeh Fonaine Hildebrand 92 Behany Olson has given many gifs in her lifeime. For holidays, birhdays, and oher special occasions, she s wrapped, ribboned and presened family and friends wih various reasures over he years. Bu i was a simple, booksore-purchased Wesminser blanke, perfumed wih he scen of heavy-duy bug spray ha urned ou o be one of he greaes presens she s ever given. The blanke, Olson s prized possession which accompanied her on her recen rip o Souh Africa, became a paring gif o her Malawian hos moher. I ook various Wesminser iems and hings from [her homeown of] Erie, bu in he end I decided o give somehing from my hear, said he Wesminser senior who was one of a 14 sudens o ravel o Malawi in May. The gif was warmly and enhusiasically received Olson s hos moher promised o wear i o church as a shawl. The warm hear of Africa, as Malawi is ofen referred, was cerainly presen a ha momen. Olson and Wesminser sudens from he spring semeser s African Hisory and Peace Sudies courses augh by Dr. Paricia Clark and he Rev. James Mohr II spen wo weeks in Souh Africa visiing Malawi, wih sops in Johannesburg, Soweo, and he Cradle of Humankind. Bu i was in Malawi a small counry he size of Pennsylvania nesled beween Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia where hey spen mos of heir ime. While he counry is noed as he hird mos impoverished naion on he plane and faces such issues as disease, crime, and a high deah rae, members of he ravel group found i o be rich in culure, spiri, and humaniy. Despie he counry s hardships, members of he ravel cluser hosed by he members of he Pisburgh Parnership, a group formed wihin he Presbyerian Synod of Blanyre weren shelered from he Malawian people. Insead, hey were encouraged o immerse hemselves in he counry s culure. There hey paricipaed in and sang in church worship services, raveled o various mission sies, oured he Mulanje Mission 20

23 Hospial, me sudens from he Zomba Theological College, and go o know he smiling children from hree differen orphan ceners. Each suden also spen ime wih a hos family. And while a journey o Souh Africa would cerainly be incomplee wihou aemping o spo he celebraed Big Five he lion, elephan, rhinoceros, leopard and buffalo as well as he giraffe, zebra, hippo, and wildebees, he Rev. James Mohr II, college chaplain, definiely waned o shif he focus from being on an African safari. My goal was for i no o be a rip where hey wen o he zoo, said Mohr, who helped each he Peace Sudies course. Insead, he sighseeing he really waned his sudens o observe had o do wih he human spiri. I wasn jus abou aking a rip. I waned hem o mee people wih an enirely differen background, gain an undersanding and appreciaion of he culure and he people, and experience worship from an African perspecive, said Mohr. In a counry where here are more han one million orphans mosly due o AIDS/HIV-relaed deahs of heir parens and he life expecancy is roughly 43 years of age, i s difficul o imagine much happiness and a faih. The people of Malawi embrace life. They are fearless in heir faih in God, said Olson. She poined ou ha courage wheher i be in he face of he daily horror of he HIV/ AIDS crisis or he jump from a rocky cliff ino a waerfall s pool is par of daily life in Malawi. We asked hem Isn here anyhing you re afraid of? and hey gave us looks of shock and responded No, why? God is wih us. There is nohing o be afraid of, said Olson. Behany Olson spends ime wih a couple of her new Malawian friends. The srong sense of communiy is also prevalen among he Malawi people, Olson said. I was forced o hink a lo abou his idea of communiy, because in America, i is no uncommon o no know he name of your neighbor. When a family in Malawi ges a new goa, he whole communiy embraces his goa i s he communiy goa. And 60 people for dinner o celebrae he The Rev. James Mohr prepares a sermon for a Harves Sunday service. Sudens and he Rev. James Mohr lead Malawian children in "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." new goa really is jus a few friends. The group aended one Harves Service, which boh Mohr and Olson recalled as one of he mos overwhelming and enlighening experiences of he visi. Mohr, in fac, was unexpecedly asked o preach he service, which cenered around Ecclesiasics 3:1-8, A Time for Everyhing. Despie he economic sruggles and he need o feed heir own families, despie he poor growing condiions of he land, each person arrived a he Harves Service wih heir gifs of grain, frui and vegeables for God. Their sacrifices were so ouching. This is food hey could use o feed heir children, bu hey were joyful o give i, said Olson. I was so moving o winess. The spiri of God was definiely in ha room. And while Olson said she discovered much abou he African culure, he experience forced her o look wihin and was surprised ha she learned even more abou herself. I lef wih a much broader world view, Olson said. This experience was so imporan o me personally. I allowed me o branch ou and see he world differenly. I helped redefine who I am as a person. Now I ry o ake five-minue showers insead of 15, because I know wha i s like o value fresh waer. Now I m open o rying new foods because in Malawi, if you don clean your plae, i s offensive and waseful, she said. This was a rip of a lifeime. One minue I m seeing hippos and nex minue I m playing wih children and making hem laugh and smile, said Olson. Some may have hough his kind of rip was oo expensive. Bu o me, i was worh every cen.
