7 Education Outreach New MOLU brochure developed A new MOLU brochure for teachers and other educators was recently produced that outlines the traveling exhibit s energy education and its correlations to the National Science Standards for grades 5-8. The $1.2 million MOLU features six self-contained learning centers with curriculum-based, hands-on activities about energy and the technologies and sciences involved in the oil and gas industry. MOLU s sponsors include Devon, Dominion, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Marathon Oil and Schlumberger. The MOLU can reach up to 192 students per exhibition day, with 48 students rotating through the exhibit during four two-hour sessions during the school day. Students receive a MOLU Pass with questions to be answered that correlate to the activities on all 24 of the exhibit s stations. Students Plenty of workshop opportunities in 2009 OEC is offering plenty of opportunities for teachers and other educators to learn about the offshore energy industry as well as receive credits for continued professional development. While several workshops last year were held at Shell s facilities in Houston, it s anticipated that most or all of this year s workshops will be held aboard the Ocean Star, where they traditionally have been conducted. A total of 18 Project E 3 : Expanding Energy Education workshops are scheduled this year, including nine each for the Knowledge Box and Playing with Petroleum. The six-hour workshops in Galveston begin at 9:00 a.m. Participants will receive a light breakfast, lunch, the Project E 3 education book (a $35.00 value) and a $25.00 travel stipend. 8 Ocean Star News Power restored to Ocean Star Electricity was finally restored to the Ocean Star on January 5 after a couple of false starts. Electrical junction boxes and breaker boxes were replaced as well as wiring on the ramp from the former gift shop to the rig. Since the telephone system was installed in the gift shop, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ike, that equipment has now been installed on the rig. Upon first visit after electricity was restored, the rig looked good and there wasn t even a lot of dust, said Lisa Lisinicchia, Ocean Star Operations Director. The elevator works, computers work and the plumbing and water works. The exhibits looked very good and, although a few pieces were damaged, most of the interactive exhibits were operable, she said. A company was pumping out the remaining water from the 1,000 gallon saltwater aquarium in preparation for cleaning and replacing the water, live rock, and the fish. A telephone contractor was in the process of installing a new switch box on the rig. A safety audit will be performed courtesy of Shell before we begin opening to the public and accommodating companies that have rented the conference room or the rig for tours and other events and teacher workshops, Lisa said. She also expects most of the museum s docents to return. Several of the workers are Texas A&M Galveston students, who were transferred to the College Station campus until the Galveston location could get running again. They are now back in Galveston for the spring semester so they were able to return at the same time the Ocean Star received power, Lisa explained. Before Hurricane Ike, the museum was on track to to post a record year for number of visitors. More than 26,000 people had visited the Ocean Star from January 1 to September 10, Lisa said would have been a recordbreaking year for the museum. As it was, we already had the highest number of student groups tour the rig, more than 5,000 before the hurricane, Lisa noted. However, companies are continuing to inquire about sending new employees to the museum for tours. Baker Hughes, for example, reserved 24 dates during 2009 to send its new employees. We have been taking their contact information and will call them when we know the rig will be available, Lisa said. OEC is still working to find a replacement for the Gift Shop and Welcome Center, as reported in the third quarter The Star, the original building was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike. Ocean Star renovations, upgrades in progress Prior to the storm and as a part of the Vision 2016 campaign, a renovation program was developed that includes overall repairs to the Rig Museum itself, Vision The initial cost of the renovations was estimated at $4 million. Several of the OEC s supporters began preparing for renovations to the Ocean Star and exhibit upgrades prior to Hurricane Ike. Rowan Companies has committed to provide in-kind donations to the renovation effort and because electricity has finally been restored after Hurricane Ike, their work will begin in the first quarter. The company will remove and replace handrails on the pipe deck as well as perform some welding, and unnecessary steel removal from the Texas deck. The derrick s substructure will be stabilized and steel replaced and refurbished. Exhaust lines from the old engines will also be removed. Schlumberger is updating several inside exhibits including light boxes and renovating the seismic vessel model and adding a new video loop to the seismic exhibit. Prior to Hurricane Ike, the company measured in order to replace some Plexiglas panels on the production and well completion exhibit on the second floor and will update the signage and verbiage on the geology exhibit on the first floor. ConocoPhillips donated five laptop and 10 desktop computers for use on the rig. After the Hurricane, fund raising efforts have been increased and the rig renovation portion of the capital campaign has been renamed Save the Star. As of January 2009, more than $2.9 million in donations or in-kind donations have been pledged by numerous companies: ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Schlumberger, Rowan Companies, The Sanford Foundation (Oil & Gas Rental Services), and Anadarko. Two anonymous personal donations have also been made. Letters were inserted in the third quarter newsletter and with the OEC Society membership renewals requesting donations to help fund hurricane repairs, the Ocean Star Renovation or general funds for the Ocean Star. More than $85,500 was raised through this initiative.
