2 ABOUT THE NIJC HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS Since 2000, the National Immigrant Justice Center s (NIJC) Human Rights Awards luncheon has honored human rights champions and celebrated the contributions of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders. The event draws more than 1,000 attendees and provides critical funding for NIJC to ensure that it can continue to promote human rights and access to justice for immigrants. Visit immigrantjustice.org/humanrightsawards AWARDEES Keynote speaker & Jeanne and Joseph Sullivan Award recipient: Dolores Huerta Dolores Huerta is an American labor leader and civil rights activist who cofounded the National Farmworkers Association with César Chávez in 1962, making famous the popular rallying cry, Sí, Se Puede! Huerta has received numerous awards and accolades over the past five decades, recognizing her advocacy on behalf of workers, immigrants, and women s rights, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. In 2017, a biographical film titled Dolores was released, highlighting her lifelong commitment to social justice. Today at 87, Huerta continues her lifelong work protecting human rights; developing grassroots leaders; and advocating for the working poor, immigrants, women, and children. She is president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Human Rights Practitioner Award recipient: Jones Day Jones Day is a long-time pro bono partner with NIJC. Most recently, the firm created a national project to represent detained immigrant women in Laredo, Texas where its pro bono attorneys are conducting Know Your Rights trainings and intakes, and representing women seeking asylum. This is a unique project as it responds to a need for access to counsel in an area of the country where there are limited, if any, legal services available to poor asylum seekers. In addition to providing detained representation and legal consultations to hundreds of individuals, the firm has represented more than 150 non-detained immigrants. Human Rights Corporate Award recipient: Microsoft Corporation Microsoft is the leading platform and productivity company for the mobile-first, cloud-first world, and its mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Microsoft is committed to respecting human rights by seeking to avoid infringing on the rights of others and working to address adverse human rights impacts with which it is involved. Microsoft also commits to promoting human rights by harnessing the beneficial power of technology to help realize and sustain human rights everywhere. 1
