2 2 Marset News SCOTCH CLUB SCOTCH CLUB Xavier Mañosa & Mashallah The designer says The Scotch Club is the result of a long-distance creative correspondence between Berlinbased Mashallah and Xavier Mañosa s studio in Barcelona. It began with the creation on the computer of a geometric mass, which was then broken down into discrete polygons to be printed on paper and faxed to Barcelona. Upon receipt, Mañosa applied a coat of resin to stiffen the paper and reconstructed the original shape, from which he produced a plaster mould to facilitate the manufacture of the ceramics. One could say the finished product represents the fruit of the nervous tension between the digital and the handcrafted worlds: designed on a computer, transmitted by the technologically obsolete fax, and finally produced in a kiln. Toward the end of 1959, in Aachen, Germany, the now-famous Scotch Club had its opening night. The owner, seeing that the patrons were growing bored, asked a journalist to announce the songs as they were played this was the birth of the discotheque as we know it today. Xavier Mañosa and Mashallah s latest collaboration, the Scotch Club ceramic collection takes its inspiration from that discotheque, with a design reminiscent of the widely popular revolving disco ball. Its 72 faces reflect light from the interior in all directions, casting elegant, complex visual patterns around the room. Made from a meticulous and traditional design process, the lamps are fired four times using glazes specifically developed for Marset and incorporate warm, high-quality materials, such as gold. Available in white, blue, terracotta, or black ceramic, with brilliant white or gold enamel interiors, the collection includes three sizes of pendant, as well as wall and ceiling models.

7 12 Marset News NENÚFAR NENÚFAR Joan Gaspar The designer says The surprising thing about the Nenúfar is that the element that connects the discs is set not at their edges but seems to emerge through the light itself, without creating odd or uncomfortable shadows. The use of LED technology round the perimeters means one can get away with showing off like that! The outcome of the designer s arduous quest to create a fixture that seems to float on air, the Nenúfar takes its name and its delicate shape from the water lily. The Nenúfar is a cluster of pendants, based on LED technology, made up of several discs connected by the same stem, but separated from each other in a way that the beams emitted by the different elements are not broken by the lowest component, which also projects its ray of light downwards. The result is a strong, uniform, direct beam that emerges beneath the discs of an item that is midway between decorative and architectural, and can be applied to both purposes with ease. Sober and well finished, the Nenúfar utilizes topquality materials and the power of LED to radiate an exquisite luminosity and create warm, welcoming atmospheres. This fixture is in its element installed in a series creating areas lit at different heights and with various combinations of discs or on its own as a surprising, well balanced and subdued centerpiece. Choose from one, two, or three white or black discs supported by a polished chrome stem.

9 16 Marset News POLO POLO Joan Gaspar The designer says To my way of thinking, a good idea or concept is essential in industrial design, but the industrial process chosen is crucial, as the how determines the what: the industrial process determines the final appearance and the values it expresses. I believe that this flexible lamp is a perfect example of how I see products: before deciding on the parts of the final form, I was quite clear about how it was to be made, as the type of manufacturing and the materials chosen had defined a particular way of communicating, more technical but also emotive, stronger, with less parts technically simple attractive. I had been sketching it for years, and I like to see that certain aspects have remained the same: the mechanical system which controls friction (a simple clip system which uses a screw to set the necessary pressure), the technology for producing the arms (injectionmoulded aluminium featuring the joint and arm in a single piece) and also the system for pulling the springs located inside (a stainless steel strip). The shade is a very important part of a product of this kind because it is the part with which the user interacts the most. In this case, I wanted the shade to recall, in a way, the old flexible lamps, to which its size and shape refers, though the light source is certainly very different. The switch is where I express this aspect the most, using a wheel system to turn it on and off, deliberately avoiding electronic mechanisms. I wanted the click sound every time the lamp was turned on or off, mechanically recalling those early articulated lights. The fluidity of its movements and its total stability make this flexible fitting a light source which can be moved anywhere without cluttering your desk or taking up too much valuable space. Its integrated LED technology allows one to direct the beam with the utmost precision, for a light that is both focused and warm, yet highly useful. The Polo comes with a diffuser made from injected aluminium, arms and built-in swivel joints CNC milled from an aluminium block, and a rotary switch located in the upper part of the headstock. Available in both black and white, it is supplied with a range of accessories: base, clamp, table or wall bracket, and, more recently, a floor stand, which makes it an ideal contender as a reading lamp.

11 20 Marset News FUNICULÍ FUNICULÍ Lluís Porqueras Throughout his career as a designer, Lluís Porqueras has always sought an absolute simplicity in his designs, doing away with everything superfluous to leave the essence of the useful, simple object. The Funiculí is the epitome of that concept; 30 years after it first appeared, it is still cutting-edge. While the standard Funiculí was updated last year, the collection has also been extended to incorporate table and wall versions, which retain both the purity of the fixture s style and its original attributes. Using the same double-clip mechanism of the original, these scaled-down models allow easy height adjustment and 360º shade rotation to fit the needs of any room or user. The base of the table model has been fitted with a black rubber sleeve to prevent cold-contact between the metal and the table, and to impart additional stability.
