26 FET-Open: Novel ideas for radically new technologies The Six Gatekeepers 1. Long-term vision: research to address a new and radical long-term vision of a science- and technologyenabled future that is far beyond the state of the art and not currently foreseen by technology roadmaps. 2. Breakthrough scien2fic and technological target: research must target a scien4fically ambi4ous and technologically concrete breakthrough, argued to be a crucial step towards achieving the long-term vision. The plausibility of the proposed breakthrough(s) to be aoained within the life-4me of the project must be argued in the proposal. 3. Novelty: the research proposed for achieving the breakthrough must be based on cudng-edge knowledge, new ideas and concepts, rather than in the mere applica4on or incremental refinement of exis4ng ones. 4. Founda2onal: the breakthroughs that are envisaged must be founda4onal in the sense that, if achieved, they would establish an essen4al basis for a new kind of technology and its future uses, not currently an4cipated. 5. High-risk: the inherently high risk of the research proposed will be reflected in a flexible but effec4ve methodology for exploring alterna4ve direc4ons and op4ons, supported by open and agile research and innova4on prac4ces. 6. Interdisciplinary: the proposed collabora4ons are expected to go beyond 'waterfall' configura4ons in mul4-disciplinary science- and technology research. Instead they should seek new solu4ons through genuine exchanges, mutual learning, cross-fer4lisa4on and synergis4c advances among distant disciplines in order to open unexplored areas of inves4ga4on and new direc4ons for joint research.

Threshold: 4/5 Weight: 60% Contribu2ons to the impacts of the WP: Importance of the new technological outcome with regards to its transforma4onal impact on technology and/or society; Impact on future European scien4fic and industrial leadership, notably from involvement of new and high poten4al actors; Quality of methods and measures for achieving impact beyond the research world and for establishing European thought leadership, as perceived by industry and society.
