What s New This chapter introduces new features and a list of improvements & enhancements that can be found in this release of SketchBook Ink. Improvements and enhancements Improvements have been made in the following areas: Improved stroke quality Android stylus support - SketchBook Ink supports pressure sensitivity for native Android styli. Pen Only Mode - In Pen Only Mode, you can only sketch with the stylus. This prevents your fingers leaving inadvertent strokes. Your finger still can open menus, pick brushes, and do multi-touch gestures. Pressure-sensitive brush - Once your stylus is recognized by SketchBook Ink, the pressure-sensitive brush appears at the top of the Brush Palette. This brush is specially designed for use with the stylus pressure-sensitivity and does not work with your finger. Flurry - This feature provides valuable anonymous information on how our users use SketchBook Ink and the types of devices being used. General bug fixes
Tips Before You Begin Here are some tips to help you before you start sketching: Start with background elements and build up your image. To load an image as a background, see Import images on page 9. Undo is your best friend. Use it instead of the eraser strokes to remove strokes. Your image will render faster for this. See Editing on page 7. Use the Tour Guide to quickly refresh yourself with features found in Ink. Tap to hide the UI and have full use of the canvas. See Hide the UI on page 5. Tap-hold to get the Color Picker and quickly grab and change your brush color. See Capturing a color on page 6. Zoom in to focus in on an area and add detail. Keep in mind, fine sub-pixel detail may not be visible depending on the resolution of your output image. See Sub-pixel brushes on page 7 and Navigating on page 5. Render times are determined by the number of strokes and the export size. See Selecting an export resolution on page 13.
Getting Started Create a canvas Tap and select New Canvas. Select the orientation. Navigating While drawing, use two fingers to zoom in/out and pan around. The view sharpens automatically, as SketchBook Ink dynamically renders and enhances your drawing. To see your full image, tap. Save your work or variations of it as a PNG to your Photo Library, using the Gallery. Hide the UI Tap to hide the interface as you sketch. Tap again to display it.
Color Customize the color palette Tap-hold a color from the palette to open the Color Editor and create a color. Tap the canvas. Selecting a color Do either of the following: Tap the Color puck to access the Color Editor. Tap a color in the Color Palette to select it. Swipe up or down within the palette to access additional colors. Capturing a color Do either of the following: Tap-hold to get. Drag your finger so the bull s-eye is over the color you want. Within the Color Editor, tap to capture a color on from your canvas.
Brushes After selecting a brush, use the slider to set brush size. Sub-pixel brushes Use sub-pixel sized brushes to create fine detailed on high resolution canvases. These strokes will only be visible on your ipad when zoomed in close enough. Sub-pixel brush zoomed in Sub-pixel brush zoomed out S Brush for S Pen users Once your S Pen is recognized by SketchBook, the S Brush appears at the top of the Brush Palette. This brush is specially designed for use with the S Pen s pressure-sensitivity and does not work with your finger. Pressure-sensitive brush for Android stylus users Once your device s stylus is recognized by SketchBook Ink, the pressure-sensitive brush appears at the top of the Brush Palette. This brush is specially designed for use with the stylus pressure-sensitivity and does not work with your finger. Pen Only Mode In Pen Only Mode, you can only sketch with the stylus. This prevents your fingers leaving inadvertent strokes. Your finger still can open menus, pick brushes, and do multi-touch gestures. To enable Pen Only Mode, tap and select Enable Pen Only Mode. To disable Pen Only Mode, tap and select Disable Pen Only Mode.
Editing During the different stages of creation, try these tools for editing your work: You want to remove the last stroke(s). Undo You want to start over and have a clean canvas. You re almost finished and want to refine your work, removing bits, sculpting it. Clear Layer Erase or New Canvas You made changes to a previously saved sketch and now you want to undo everything and go back to the original. Revert S Menu for S Pen users Once your S Pen is recognized by SketchBook and the S Pen is near the screen, press the pen s button. The S Menu appears. Use it to clear a layer, fit your image to the screen, undo, or redo. Tap any of these options to select one. If you don t want to make a selection, tap outside menu to exit it.
Layers Tap to access the Layer Editor. It contains: 1 Background layer to set the background color of your drawing. See Set a background color. 1 Underlay layer to import a background image. See Import an image. Inking layers to build up your drawing and separate key elements. These layers can be reordered. Select a layer Tap a layer to select it. Add a layer Create a new empty layer that appears over other layers. In the Layer Editor, tap. To reposition it, see Reorder layers. Hide a layer Tap a layer, then tap to hide it. Tap to make it visible. Change layer transparency Tap a layer, then tap-drag the Transparency slider to the left to make the layer transparent. Tap-drag it to the right to make the layer opaque. Clear layer Tap a layer, then tap to clear its content.
Import images Tap, then to load a background image. Choose an image. Set its opacity. Tap the canvas and draw. When saving your SketchBook Ink sketch, the original background image is unchanged. At any point, to hide the background image, tap, then, and. To load a new one, tap, then. Set a background color Tap, then the Background layer. Tap and select a color. Tap the Layer button to return to the Layer Editor or canvas to return to your drawing. Reorder layers Next to the layer you want to move, tap and drag the layer to change its position. To make a layer appear in front of another, move it above another. To make a layer appear behind another, move it below another. Delete a layer Remove layers to make room for new ones by tapping the layer,, then Delete.
Gallery Tap to access the Gallery and do the following: Return to the canvas - Tap. Select a file - Tap a sketch to select it. Tap to load it. Create a canvas or save your work - Tap. Duplicate an image - Tap a sketch, then tap. Also, use this to create variations of your work. Delete a file - Tap a sketch, then tap.
Saving Save your work Save a copy of your work one of two ways: Tap, select New Canvas. Tap, select Gallery, and tap. Save variations of your work Create a copy and have variations of your work. Tap tap a sketch, then tap., select Gallery, Auto-saving If your device is low on power or memory and shuts the app down, SketchBook Ink auto-saves as you work. When re-launched, SketchBook Ink will load the last working file prior to shutdown.
Tranferring and Managing Data Sharing and exporting , upload, or export your work to share it. Use Dropbox. Since SketchBook Ink is resolution independent, output to the resolution you need, without sacrificing image quality. When determining your exported canvas size, the larger the canvas, the larger the file size, and the longer it takes to render and upload when exported. When selecting a canvas size, take into account your device s limitations and only choose the size you need. Try one of SketchBook Ink s default export presets. Selecting an export resolution 1. Tap and select an option: Photo Library, Dropbox, or 2. If prompted, swipe through the following export Resolution presets to select one. 3. Tap Export.
Setting a Custom Resolution For users requiring a unique canvas size or higher resolution image, use Custom. Knowing your output destination can help you optimize things, since a larger resolution means longer rendering and uploading times. 1. Set the resolution by either dbl-tapping a field and entering the pixels or tap-dragging the slider.sketchbook Ink maintains a 5:3 aspect ratio. 2. Tap Export. Flurry This feature provides valuable anonymous information on how our users use SketchBook Ink and the types of devices being used. Turn data collection on or off in your preferences : Settings > Data Collection Settings > Approve Data Collection See the About > Legal/Privacy page to read the data collection notice.
