28 Slide 27 Fisheries Observations Lobstermen wondered why 'fixed' gear often relocated between hauls. Given new AQUAlogger 530WTD data, they have now documented when these movements occur

29 Slide 28 Fisheries Observations Nov 7: trap dropped to 317m for some hours before being lifted to 300m Smaller oscillations in depth show tidal variations While water level may not affect fishing, temperature oscillations could have an influence

30 Slide 29 Fisheries Observations December 20: trap moved from 385m to 460m, most likely by strong surface current. No immediate effect in temperature record showing well-mixed water. Downward trend in temperature between Dec 23 and 27 from ~8.5 C to ~6.5 C, then ~12 day temperature oscillations superimposed on tidal signal.

32 Slide 31 Oceanographic Observations Depth record shows clear tidal cycle with springneap variability. Significant drops in temperature e.g. 5 th & 12 th March with no corresponding change in depth or water level.

33 Slide 32 Oceanographic Observations Neap to spring cycle ~1m variation at high tide. First 3 days show minimal temperature variation with tides End of month shows much larger variation. High tide peaks correspond with temperature peaks Maximum difference between high & low tide of 0.8 F

36 Slide 35 Summary Technology commercially available and proven in field, both as fishing aid and scientific instrument. Software allows user to control manual interaction, so suitable as scientific instrument or for use on vessels of opportunity Data is available to view as soon as the instrument is retrieved: Clear benefits to the vessel Increased incentive to participate. Low-cost, precision instrument to gather data from commercial and scientific vessels Depending on sampling regime and frequency of download, battery life may exceed 5 years. Cost per data point collected during this time is tiny

37 Slide 36 Vision Growing need for information Research vessels = $$$ Instruments such as AQUAlogger 530WTD increase temporal and spatial variability at minimal capital and operational cost Using vessels of opportunity builds relationships between commercial users of the seas and oceanographic researchers. New technologies such as this data logger maximise the opportunities that vessels of opportunity offer, with minimal training and manual interaction required for successful operation.
