INTRODUCTION Eight days cruising aboard the luxurious Legend sees you discovering the beauty and magic of the Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin. Spectacular volcanic scenery and an incredible and unique array of wildlife awaits as you cruise from island to island. Shore landings allow you to walk across the varied terrains, in amongst iguanas, boobies, the nesting sites of turtles, through mangrove forests and forests of cacti. This is a journey like no other. ITINERARY
DAY 1: Monday, Embark & Bachas Beach Depart the mainland of Ecuador for your two and a half hour flight to San Cristóbal Island in the. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the M/V Legend. Please note that the National Park charges a visitor fee of USD100, payable on arrival, which funds park maintenance and supervision in the, as well as ecological study and conservation. The Islands are located about 1000 kilometres (620 miles) off the Pacific coast of South America. The archipelago is comprised of 13 major islands and scores of islets that served as a living laboratory for Charles Darwin, the renowned evolution theorist. Long before Darwin arrived in the, seafarers knew these isolated islands as home to some of the strangest and most wonderful wildlife imaginable, including birds that could swim but no longer fly, aquatic iguanas, dragon-like lizards left over from prehistoric times and the giant tortoises for which the islands were named. In the afternoon we visit Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz. Behind the beach lie two small flamingo ponds with iguanas, coastal birds, Darwin s finches, mockingbirds, and gulls, as well as interesting native and endemic vegetation and red and black mangroves. This beach is one of the main nesting sites of sea turtles in the. You will also find the remains of sunken barges, once the property of the United States Navy when they operated an airbase on Baltra Island during World War II. DAY 2: Tuesday, South Plaza & Santa Fe We arrive at South Plaza Island for a dry landing and a walk through a cactus forest, looking for both marine and land iguanas and the endemic hybrid, only to be found here. We continue to Santa Fe Island for a wet landing on a white sand beach surrounded by a sea lion colony. Here we find the larger land iguana as well as a number of endemic species including hawk, snake, rice rats, a variety of finches and one of the four species of mockingbirds. Later, enjoy some snorkelling where you may be joined by some of the wildlife.
DAY 3: Wednesday, Punta Pitt & Cerro Brujo This morning sees us landing at Pitt Point to walk across an olivine beach before a hike over rocky terrain to a volcanic tuff, taking in magnificent viewpoints on the way. This is probably the only site where the three booby species of the can be seen together: Nazca, bluefooted, and red-footed; as well as two species of frigatebirds and a sea lion colony. In the afternoon we visit Cerro Brujo, or Witch Hill, an eroding tuff cone and a beautiful white sand beach, great for snorkelling and sunbathing. We visit a lagoon where migratory bird species can be seen: blacknecked stilts, ruddy turnstones, whimbrels, other sandpiper species and white-cheeked pintails. Cerro Brujo offers beautiful views of Kicker Rock, the southern part of San Cristóbal and the adjacent coast. DAY 4: Thursday, Tortoise Breeding Centre & Tijeretas Hil Today we make a dry landing at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and visit the San Cristóbal Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre to learn about the National Park s conservation programs. You will also have the opportunity to visit the port village, have a drink or shop for arts and crafts and other souvenirs. From there we go to Tijeretas Hill which involves a high intensity walk amidst beautiful landscapes and a magnificent view at the foot of a frigatebird nesting colony.
DAY 5: Friday, Gardner Bay & Osborn Islet This morning sees us making a wet landing at Gardener Bay on a beautiful white coral sand beach guarded by a colony of sea lions. There are no trails, so we stay along the shore where we may spot hawks, American oystercatchers, ground doves, hood mockingbirds, yellow warblers, lava lizards, marine iguanas, and three species of Darwin s finches - a subspecies of the large cactus finch, which is similar to the large ground finch, the small ground finch and the warbler finch, another endemic subspecies. You can swim and snorkel amongst a great variety of fish, manta rays, and white-tipped reef sharks. We continue to Osborn Islet for its volcanic formations and large sea lion colonies and seabirds. You will also see marine iguanas, lava lizards and Sally Lightfoot crabs. We hike up towards nesting grounds of Nazca and blue-footed boobies before the impressive site of the world s largest colony of waved albatross. We also visit Soplador, a seaward blowhole that shoots water over 20m into the air. DAY 6: Saturday, Isla Floreana Today we visit two sites on Floreana Island, Post Office Bay and Cormorant Point. Floreana is known for its fabulous snorkelling sites, its vibrantly pink flamingos and its black sand beaches. You will land on a beach and head to a spot where 18th century whalers placed a wooden barrel for use as an unofficial mail box which continues today, so don't forget your postcards! In the afternoon, we head to Cormorant Point for a hike to the salt water lagoon which is home to flamingos. You will also get to swim in Champion, one of the best snorkelling sites in the Islands. DAY 7: Sunday, Isla Santa Cruz Today we reach the highlands of Santa Cruz and visit a private farm where giant tortoises are found in their natural habitat. There is the opportunity to walk inside a lava tube and visit pit craters before venturing into endemic scalesia forest looking out for vermilion flycatchers. In the afternoon, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and the giant tortoise natural reserve and conservation project. Later we return to Puerto Ayora for some free time to explore and to shop for souvenirs.
DAY 8: Monday, Daphne & Disembark We circumnavigate the islet of Daphne, an eroded tuff cone formation that was created by successive volcanic activity, for an opportunity to see Darwin s finches, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, swallow-tailed gulls and brown noddies. Afterwards, you will be taken to the airport for your return flight to Guayaquil or Quito.
