1 Reed & Weave November 2017 Edition Hello to you all! President s Message. Our last meeting was filled with some wonderful weaving and spinning stories as well as beautiful products of our art. Thank you to all who shared their artistic talents. Every time we share, we inspire! We are at a cross roads for our guild. We are scheduled to have an election next month, but not all our officer slots are filled. As you know, I ve been your interim President this year. Now our two Vice-President positions are also open. Those who have been the leaders of the guild need to step down. So, we need guild members to step up into these positions. We will help those who volunteer. We will call for nominations at our next meeting, have our vote and see what happens. So, let me know if you can do the job! I m happy to be teaching Wedge Weave in November. It is a make and take project where you will learn about the basics of this intriguing woven structure. The guild will provide a little kit with tools, yarn and a handout to take home. The only items you need to bring are a pair of scissors and a metal fork from your kitchen drawer! 3 November 13, 2017 program - wedge weaving Wedge Weave technique is characterized not only by a diagonal weave structure, but also a rippling effect to the selvedge. This latter effect produced by the weaver on purpose as a part of the woven technique. However, it was thought by those novices purchasing the rugs that it looked like bad weaving, therefore many Navajo weavers stopped production of the rugs to sell. Thus, not many 19th or early 20th century Navajo wedge weave rugs exist. Many modern weavers, however, have rediscovered this intriguing way of weaving. Join Kathleen Waln as she discusses and demonstrates this beautiful and dynamic weaving technique. She will provide a short slide show of finished rugs and a step by step wedge weave photo guide. All attending will have the opportunity to weave their own wedge weave sample. Kathleen has prepared a kit with a small warped cardboard loom, yarn, a weaving needle and a hand out. The guild will pick up the cost of the kits. If you wish to bring your own tapestry loom and yarns, you are more than welcome to do so. Although the kits include almost everything you will need, she asks you to bring scissors and a metal kitchen fork (to use as a beater.) You must sign up for this workshop. 7 Weaving and spinning classes / workshops IEHG WEAVING FOR BEGINNERS & BEYOND Suzanne Chappell, Instructor NEW Fall 2017 Weaving Schedule Learn to weave (or refresh your skills) on a 4-shaft or a rigid heddle loom in a small class setting. This is a project based class that covers weave structure, yarn and project selection, measuring yarn, warping the loom, weaving and finishing a project. Classes have 3-5 students. Loom rentals are available. PROPOSED* Fall Tue.
