3 JULIA PFEIFER Designer Julia Pfeifer is an accomplished textile and jewelry artist of thirty years, proven through accolades and museum spotlights. A master artist with representation in museums, homes and workplaces, she has designed and innovated in multiple mediums: As a child my father taught me to study how a material will act, giving me the skill and ability to express myself in any medium. Julia has found that the world of wood is where she plans to stay. Julia s father, Harry Weitzer, is mentoring her in the craft of wood, production efficiencies and aesthetics as a designer for Wood Lighting Design. Having run her own production factories Julia is eager to continue with designing lights. In her vast experience of designing and making American Craft artwork, Julia has always been interested in the interplay of light and wood, now expressed in the designs created from the combined artistry of father and daughter.

7 HARRY WEITZER Master Designer Harry Weitzer is a significant pioneer of mid-century modern design in the Pacific Northwest who continues to innovate into the twenty-first century. Through his hands-on educational experiences at Black Mountain College in the late 1940s, Harry discovered you make your best work when you take full responsibility for it. Having worked with architects and designers of both institutional and residential interiors, Harry s astute knowledge of wood, production efficiencies and aesthetics has contributed a large collection of culturally meaningful, high quality furniture made to last for generations. Throughout sixty years in the business of designing and making furniture, Harry has always been interested in applying wood to lighting. Now with this focus, his materials and designs reflect his artistic delight and a lifetime of experience, providing us with true mid-century qualities direct from the maker. Harry is a living master from a period that is greatly appreciated in today s museums, homes and workplaces.

10 WOOD VENEER Natural Works of Art The joy and satisfaction in owning your hand-crafted lights is the knowledge that each piece is a one-of-a-kind original, thanks to nature s creativity. Since no two trees are identical, every leaf of veneer is unique in grain and hue splendid in its randomness. We carefully choose veneers to achieve compatible color and texture within pairs or groups, while retaining a singular character. All the wood is hand-sanded and treated before being constructed into your authentic artisan light.

11 POPLAR Poplar veneer is typically a creamy light beige to a very pale greenish yellow toned color that deepens with age. Premium grade poplar veneer such as we employ is known for its clear grain and generally has very little to no pin knots or mineral streaks and boasts a satiny texture and tight uniform grain. We sand the wood to give it a more powdery look to its surface and then wipe it with a clear polyurethane. This effect softens the green hue and when lit the golden hues are predominant. Poplar works in almost any design setting or against an array of home or office furnishings. Poplar has a rich history dating to Roman times. The name Populus refers to the fact that the trees were often planted around public meeting places. Early renaissance Italian art was painted on Poplar wood, including the famous Mona Lisa! Stringed instruments, such as violas and harps, will often use Poplar wood as a main structural component.

12 CYPRESS Predominately yellow in tone, with occasional reddish, chocolate, or olive hues, quartered Cypress wood veneer is a very nice light wood that works well with nearly every style. The quarter sawn look produces nice straight lines. The look of the veneer is like yellow pine but with a very tight grain. Rich in resin the wood throws off a warm and subtle light. The Seminole American Natives called Cypress Hatch-in-e-haw, meaning Wood Everlasting. Designers prize its uniformity emanating from the tight growth rings. We enhance the already desirous appearance by sanding and oiling the veneer to bring out the warm hues, enriching the grain in the process. The veneer is at home in both formal and casual settings.

13 TAY Our gray Tay wood veneer is immediately recognized for its clarity of color, texture and how it integrates with a wide range of interior styles. When cut, perpendicular to the growth rings, it produces a lacewood effect prized by architects and high-end builders for design spaces. Quarter cutting also exhibits ray fleck for even more character. Gray Tay veneer is harvested from the African Koto tree and has a wide range of uses from sporting goods (table tennis paddles) to medicinal use (anti-microbials). But it is most coveted for joinery and when sliced for decorative veneer. We select only the straight grain variety for optimal stripe like appearance. The proprietary European method of pickling the wood for months in a dye results in a beautifully translucent light, creamy color into a cool gray.

14 BIRDS EYE MAPLE We have mastered the art of Birdseye Maple veneers, especially our proprietary gray originating in Europe. The European method of pickling the wood for months in a dye results in a beautifully translucent product. Science has yet to determine what creates the phenomenon present in Birdseye Maple. Found primarily, but not exclusively, in sugar maple the name derives from the appearance of swirls that resemble eyes of birds in an otherwise smooth but distinctive grain. Birdseye Maple is not due to knots as would produce burls. It is a highly sought after wood for furniture making, cabinetry and home decor. After, we sand the wood producing a powdery texture which is then wiped with polyurethane. The result is a glossy, ribbon like luster when not lit and a warm, lacy translucent look with subtle shadows dancing through the eyes when lighted. Gray Birdseye Maple fits with the entire color spectrum and will be instantly compatible with your other furnishings.

15 KARELIAN BURL Grown in the forests in Finland and Russia and harvested in winter from a frozen landscape, Karelian, also known as Masur Birch, is a slow growing tree with a trunk covered by distinctive bumps and ridges that conceal a burled wood with a marble-like pattern. The most prominent patterns show a kind of bursting and cracking that only appear in trees grown in particular soil conditions. There are typically live edges and pin holes identified with this species. The wood has nice figuring that is very similar to Birdseye Maple though of a different origin. The creamy, golden color with random, chestnut brown streaking yields stunning contrast for decorative items. It has been crafted for royalty into a host of items including jewel boxes, frames, inlays and collectibles. A favorite of woodcrafters for centuries, Karelian veneer exudes a warm glow when lighted. Unlit it remains a piece of art onto itself, flattering homes and offices of many styles.

16 HOLLY Growing along the west coast of North America from California to British Columbia it has quickly spread into native forest habitats, where it thrives in the shade. It is known for its bright red berries which bring cheer during the holiday months and offer food for a variety of birds in this cooler part of the year. Holly wood is the whitest of all woods, dense and hard and can be readily stained and polished. It is commonly used in furniture, inlays or in engraving work. It has a creamy white color and smooth texture. There is no figure in the grain, so irregular grain is not easily detected in the finished product. One of the old uses has been keys, pegs and inlay work in musical instruments. One surprising use is that sometimes this beautiful white wood was stained black and used as a substitute for ebony.
