2 Dan Tilden Natural-edge Design Friday 1:40 PM 3:10 PM D136 Dan will discuss the many possibilities of incorporating the natural edge on your hollow vessels or bowls, showing how using a natural edge begins with the first cut of the chain saw or bandsaw. Join the conversation with your ideas and opinions of his and his students designs, and then watch Dan turn a natural-edge vessel from start to finish. He will focus on the process and techniques of turning a hollow vessel how to mount the piece, properly cut the wood, and measure for a consistent wall thickness. Dan Tilden Maximizing Expensive Wood Friday 3:30 PM 5:00 PM D136 Instead of losing precious inches of expensive wood to faceplate screws or the foot of a chuck, learn how to mount the piece quickly and effectively to a waste block with a strong adhesive. Sanding both glue surfaces completely flat and parallel to each other creates a safe and solid glue joint. With these tips, Dan will turn a hollow vessel, maximizing every possible inch of expensive or rare turning stock. Vivien Grandouiller Spheres Saturday 8:00 9:30 D136 Spheres can be decorated with more spheres. Vivien will first turn a sphere and hollow off-center with the lathe and a Foredom, then increase the decoration with masking techniques for sandblasting and airbrush painting. The result is simple and elegant. Vivien Grandouiller Menhirs and Ogives Saturday 10:30 noon D136 Vivien pays homage to monoliths found throughout Western Europe with airbrush painting, sandblasting to highlight the natural growth rings, and sculpting with a Foredom. This is a toys-for-boys session that goes beyond basic turning. Ed Pretty Beyond ABC Friday 8:20 9:50 D137-D138 Most turners have been told that the universal three-step approach to woodturning is as simple as ABC Anchor, Bevel, Cut. While this outlines the basic aspects, there is a lot more to a controlled cut than simply putting the tool on the toolrest, placing the bevel on the wood, and making a cut more than is seldom, if ever, discussed. None of it is complicated, and all of it is completely logical. This demonstration will give you a full understanding of Anchor, Bevel, and Cut and will help you understand at least two causes of catches that you may never have considered. You will never ruin the rim of a bowl on the finishing cut again. Eli Avisera Blocks & Inlays Friday 10:40 12:10 PM D137-D138 Eli will explain how to prepare the Avisera blocks and inlays, such as cutting and gluing, and then will turn a goblet with a long stem, while explaining the techniques of turning a thin long spindle. He will explain designing and finishing the product. Eli Avisera Square Bowl & Puzzle Friday 1:40 PM 3:10 PM D137-D138 Turning a square bowl with a thin wall requires attention on the corners, but Eli makes it look easy. He will decorate the bowl with acrylic paints and continue the decoration with a skew chisel. In the second part of the demonstration, Eli will turn a box with a decorated lid of silver leaf, to demonstrate different effects. Learn about this woodturning puzzle. Eli Avisera Decorated Plate Friday 3:30 PM 5:00 PM D137-D138 Eli will turn a 12 diameter platter with attention to design and using woodturning tools efficiently, including how to sharpen. He will demonstrate different techniques of decorating the rim, including carving, texturing, and coloring. May 17, p.m. Page 2 of 17

3 Ed Pretty Spindle Replication Saturday 8:00 9:30 D137-D138 It s safe to say that very many turners are reluctant to tackle a project that involves turning more than one piece alike, such as spindles or matching bowls. Turning multiples involves a few simple tricks that demystifies the process, using a couple of basic tool skills that are far less complex than is commonly believed. Understanding the process can turn something that is usually considered boring into something that greatly enhances tool control overall and can be meditative. Wayne Miller Acrylic Segmenting Saturday 1:30 PM 3:00 PM E141-E142 As turners, we understand that there is no right way to do any of the operations, especially in stacked ring segmenting. After mastering cutting segments; gluing, clamping, and stacking rings; turning; and finishing, why not investigate other materials? Like acrylic. The steps are the same, but the technique is different because of the nature of the material and characteristics of the adhesive. Turning, sanding, and finishing also require different techniques. Learn the subtle differences with video and several hands-on demonstrations. Saturday 8:00 9:30 E147-D148 Learn all about the mysteries of ornamental turning and how it can be used to add decorative elements to your turnings. Jon will provide an overview of the various lathes, tools, and accessories that are used to produce the wide array of patterns made possible through ornamental turning, both historical and modern. He will demonstrate various cutting and work-holding techniques to help visualize how the specialized equipment is used to generate the ornamental patterns. Saturday 10:30 noon E147-D148 Anyone who has tried their hand at ornamental turning quickly realizes that it is relatively easy to produce continuous concave surfaces using a rose engine, but it can seem impossible to cut a smooth convex surface. Jon will show three distinctly different ways to overcome this challenging problem. You will see how to approximate a curve using a faceting technique. Then the traditional technique for producing curved surfaces using a curvilinear apparatus will be demystified. Finally an overview of some historical spherical slide rests will pave the way for a modern approach to the same problem. Friday 8:20 9:50 D135 Panel Discussion - Many makers have used arts and craft shows to sell their work. These are great venues to meet collectors and soon-to-be collectors. Collectors are always a welcome sell, but collectors are a very small part of a sales strategy, which means as a maker you need many other avenues to sell your work. Join this diverse panel to see where these professionals are selling their work. There will be a lively discussion and hopefully many participants sharing their strategies for making sales. It does not matter which carrier you use your package is one of millions in their system each day, to be delivered with indifference in a certain manner at a certain cost. A simple question: What does it take for the work to arrive intact? The panelists will discuss the many aspects of this topic, followed by a Q&A opportunity. The top 10 mistakes in packing artwork. Selecting and using packing and cushioning materials. Selecting a carrier (FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.) and their requirements for packing, plus costs of various shipping options. Advantages of a shorter transit time vs. cost. Insurance of work in transit. What options/advantages are available in lieu of carrier-based insurance? Work shipped in multiple sections because of size, weight, or material differences. Instructions required for reassembly, especially by someone other than the artist. 12:10 PM D135 Panel Discussion - At some point, an artist s fragile creation must leave the careful, loving hands of its maker or be returned from the exhibition curator or gallery, and thrust into the topsy-turvy world of transportation.
