CHAPTER 2: Using Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure presents an action-packed typing adventure. You ll be presented with top-notch typing instruction as you participate in an enchanting, fun-filled adventure. The Adventure Begins Once upon a time there was a charming land known as Typelandia. Typelandia gets its name from the unique power that typed letters have in this land. Just like the letters on your keyboard! Typelandia had always been a peaceful place, full of warmth and good cheer. But recently, odd things have been happening, as if a most curious magical spell has enchanted the land! There have been reports of strange enchantments along the road to the Palace. Young adventurers should take the road to the Palace and discover the source of this magical spell! Are you ready? The first time you sign in, be sure to choose a skill level that you are comfortable with; Easy or Not as Easy. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure will then present lessons and challenges based upon your skill level. Navigating Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure Each screen in Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure has several areas that you can click. To find out whether an area is clickable or not, move the mouse pointer over it. If the mouse pointer changes or an object glows, that item is clickable. Where to Start When you first sign-up as a new adventurer, you will meet the Shoppe Keeper in Ye Old Magic Shoppe. He ll give you a brief overview of what to expect in the enchanting world of Typelandia and help you prepare for the typing adventure that awaits. Type your name using your keyboard, or use your mouse to click the alphabetic letters. When you have finished, click the OK button or press the Enter key on your keyboard. After the Shoppe Keeper introduces himself, you ll view a short presentation called How to Type, available in the Magic Shoppe. Don t worry, ergonomics is just a fancy way of saying how to sit comfortably at the keyboard. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 7

Chapter 2: Using Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure After viewing the How To Type presentation, you ll return to the Magic Shoppe. Young typists will work at a slower pace and learn just a few keys at a time. This way they ll build their confidence and the skills needed before graduating to a more challenging course. Choose a course that s just right for you! If a course seems too easy or too difficult, return to the Typing Courses area from the Magic Shoppe and select a different course, or try changing your Skill Level setting. No matter which course you choose, you ll embark on an adventure through Typelandia! There are various features available to you in the Typing Courses area: You Are The adventurer s name displays, showing which user is currently logged in. An array of magically enchanted objects will try to distract you, so stay focused on typing the words and you ll win big! If you type too slowly or make too many mistakes, the targets will get away. Game Play When you play Quack Cottage from your selected Typing Course, the settings are automatically selected based on your Words Per Minute Goal and Learned Keys. The game is over when you complete the challenge. When you play from the Palace Arcade, you can choose Lesson Content (Easy Words, Difficult Words, etc.), Words Per Minute and the Time Limit from the Settings menu. To increase the game challenge, increase your Words Per Minute goal from the Settings menu. To select a target, type the first character of the word. If you want to select a different target, press the Escape key and type the first character of the new target. The goal of Quack Cottage is to type as many targets as you can, correctly, using proper typing form, within the time limit. Game Description Work on words or on the keyboard or numbers on the 10-key pad to increase your letter and number skills as you collect coins from the Wishing Well in Coin Catch. Quickly type the characters or numbers that appear below each falling coin to pluck them out of the well. Collecting coins can be easy or difficult, depending on the settings you select. Catch as many coins as you can and earn points. If you catch all of the coins, you ll earn 1,000 bonus points. Game Play When you play Coin Catch from your selected Typing Course, the settings are automatically set to your Words Per Minute goal, Game Level and Learned Keys. The game ends when the time expires. When you play from the Palace Arcade, you can select the lesson content (easy words, difficult words, etc), the Words Per Minute goal, and the time limit from the Settings menu. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 18

Chapter 5: Typelandia s Games Begin by correctly typing the words, characters, or numbers below each coin quickly and accurately as the coins fall through the water. If you type too slowly or make too many mistakes, the coins will fall out of reach. Earn points for each correctly typed word or set of numbers. To target a coin, type the first character. To switch to a different coin, press the Escape key, and type the first character of a new target coin. In addition to collecting coins, you will see other items in the Well, too, including the ring, acorn and water snakes. The acorn freezes the falling coins, allowing you to type all of the targets and collect more points. If you type the letters associated with the ring, you will collect all targets currently onscreen. The snakes are aggravators that burn up any coin in their path, removing the possibility of collecting the coins earning points and getting a perfect score! Game Scoring The scoring system is based on both your speed and accuracy. You receive 15 points for each character you type correctly, as follows: Two character targets Three character targets Four character targets Five character targets Six character targets Seven+ character targets Run Pluto Run 30 points 45 points 60 points 75 points 90 points 105 points Don t be distracted by the scenic forest around you stay focused on the course. If you mistype a character, Pluto will stop running until you enter the right character. Correctly typed letters will enable Pluto to run faster. Be careful! Your opponent s pace is determined by your Words Per Minute speed, so you ll need to exceed expectations to win the race. Game Play When you play Run Pluto Run from your selected Typing Course, the settings are automatically set to your Words Per Minute goal, Game Level and Learned Keys. When the game is launched from the Typing Course, it ends when you complete the challenge. When you play from the Palace Arcade, you may select the Lesson Content (easy words, difficult words, etc), from the Settings menu. To begin play, start typing the text you see on the screen to set Pluto s paws a pounding, moving him across the course. If you type faster than your Words Per Minute speed, you will run ahead of your opponent. Type too slowly or make a mistake and Pluto will fall behind. The goal of the game is to win the race. Tip: If your lesson content is the Keypad-Numbers or Keypad-All Keys, press the Enter key after each set of characters. Game Scoring Run Pluto Run is a win or lose game but you earn points for each letter you type correctly and lose points for incorrect typing. Choose new settings each time you play to add variety and challenge to the racing competition! Spelunking Game Description Reach for keys beyond the home row and type with accuracy and speed as you race Pluto to the finish line. Correctly typed words keep Pluto s paws in motion! Game Description This action-packed, cave adventure will help you master challenging keys on the keyboard. Type words quickly to remove hungry Cave Critters before they reach the Spelunker. The deeper you go, in three exciting levels of play, the harder it is to escape. Watch for the Giant Hornet, Dragon Bat and the Spider. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 19

Chapter 5: Typelandia s Games They cast out multiple words all at once, repeatedly! Be ready to type all the words before they reach Professor Von Drake, or you will lose a chance. Earn points by successfully typing all of the characters, and advancing to the next level of play, deeper down into the depths of the cave! Game Play When you play Spelunking from your selected Typing Course, the settings are automatically set to your Word Per Minute goal, Game Level and Learned Keys. When the game is launched from the Typing Course, it ends when you complete the challenge. The Faire When you have completed your Typelandia Adventure, reached 90% accuracy, and 15 WPM and passed the final challenge, you ll have broken the last enchantment and earned the privilege of entering the Faire -- where new and exciting activities await! When you play from the Palace Arcade, you select the lesson content (easy words, difficult words, etc), the words per minute, and the sound on or off from the Settings menu. Begin by correctly typing the words on the target cave critters. Press the Escape key to change targets. If you type too slowly or make too many mistakes, the critters will reach the Professor! The more quickly you type and remove the targets, the more points you earn. If you let them get too close to the spelunker, you will not earn as many points. Tip: If the critters overwhelm you, press the Spacebar or Enter Key to unleash the Firestorm to eliminate all of the critters that are on the screen. The goal of the game is to complete all three levels and earn as many points as you can by successfully typing the characters on each cave critter. Game Scoring The scoring system is based on your speed and accuracy, and calculated differently for each wave during the three levels, as follows: There are bonuses for you to discover inside the Faire that you can find with your mouse pointer. You ll discover the Coloring Book and Target Typing and have access to the Palace and Village. The Coloring Book Each level features: Wave 1 critters Wave 1 bonus (second color) Wave 2 critters Wave 2 bonus (second color) Giant Critter 5 points 10 points 10 points 20 points 15 points per string *Includes bonus critters, which are a different color than the other critters on the screen, and require typing two sets of characters to zap. Tip: Type these critters first to get the maximum bonus points. You ll find a fun selection of Disney Story Characters and familiar favorites! Click a title from the list to display an image that you can print and color! At the end of play, you will see your total game points scored. Note: Cave spelunking is a great way to improve your typing skills! Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 20

Chapter 5: Typelandia s Games Target Typing Game Description Prepare to collect word targets in Target Typing, a classic carnival target gallery game. You ll hone your typing skills by correctly typing the character strings associated with the targets. Stay focused on typing the words and you ll win big! If you type too slowly or make a mistake, the targets will get away. Game Play When you play Target Typing in the Palace/Faire, you can choose the Lesson Content (Easy Words, Difficult Words, etc.), Words Per Minute and the Time Limit from the Settings menu. To increase the game challenge, increase your Words Per Minute goal from the Settings menu. To select a target, type the first character of the word. If you want to select a different target, press the Escape key and type the first character of the new target. The goal of Target Typing is to type as many targets as you can correctly using proper typing form, within the time limit. Game Scoring Duck 5 points You Baby receive Duck points for each target you type 8 points correctly, as follows: Magic Duck 8 points Funky Duck 10 points Flying Mallards 20 points Knight 15 points King and Queen 20 points 6 bottles 100 points 5 bottles 70 points 4 bottles 50 points 3 bottles 30 points 2 bottles 10 points 1 bottle 5 points At the end of play, you will see how many targets you typed correctly, how many you missed, and your total points score. Note: Play the game often and beat your score! Target Typing is only available in the Faire. The Palace Just a click away from the Faire, you ll enter the Palace interior. At the Palace you ll find the Palace Arcade and Typelandia s most challenging game: Mickey and the Pyramid of Peril. You can also return to the Faire and Village from the Palace. Target Typing is played in three rounds: Round 1: Ducks The duck round is a traditional-style target gallery. Type each word associated with the ducks. Round 2: Marionettes During round 2 you will occasionally see the Jester! If you type the characters associated with the jester with 100% accuracy, you will clear the board and earn points for all of the current targets. Round 3: Bottles. Round 3 works like a game of bowling. You ll knock down each bottle you type correctly. Any bottles typed incorrectly will be left standing. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 21

Chapter 5: Typelandia s Games Palace Arcade When you reach the Palace and Faire, the games are even better! Game Description Sharpen your speed and dexterity playing Mickey Mouse and the Pyramid of Peril. Use your keyboarding skills to clear all of the words from the pyramid and change them to the new target color, while avoiding the bad guys! This game has quite a cast of characters to keep you typing quickly and accurately! In the Palace Arcade you ll be able to play the games you encountered on your adventure -- but now you control the settings! If you run into Fiery, Galaxy, Knighty or Dragony, you will lose a chance. Run into Boony or Goody and earn bonus points! Watch out for Jokey, he changes the pyramid pillars back to their original color. Catch him quickly to stop him before he undoes all of your hard work plus earn bonus points! Game Play When you play Mickey Mouse and the Pyramid of Peril from your selected Typing Course, the settings are automatically set to your Learned Keys. The game ends when you complete the challenge. Set the game the way you want to play; change the words you type using the Lessons options and the WPM speed! This is the optimal place to practice your new Touch Typist skills. Mickey Mouse and the Pyramid of Peril When you play from the Palace, you can select level 1, 2, 3, or 4, and the lesson content (easy words, difficult words, etc), from the Settings menu. Begin by correctly typing the words on the pyramid pillars. Once you type the word correctly, the pillar will change to a new color. You must change all of the pillars on the pyramid to the correct color to win the round. Catch bonus balls for extra points and avoid colliding with the bad guys or you will lose a chance. Each level of play is more challenging. The goal is to change the pyramid pillars to the new target color for all rounds in each of the four levels and win the game! Tip: The top of the pyramid is always a safe place. Occasionally you will see a helpful Magic Carpet adjacent to the pyramid. You can evade the bad guys by hopping onto the Magic Carpet which will return you to the top pillar. Mickey Mouse and the Pyramid of Peril is Typelandia s most exciting and challenging typing game, featuring 4 fast-paced levels of fun! Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure User s Guide 22

Chapter 5: Typelandia s Games Game Scoring The scoring system is based on your speed and accuracy, and calculated differently for each of the four levels of play, as follows: Level Points Bonus Bonus Bonus per Word Points Points Points (Typed (Boony) (Goody) (Slippy) Correctly) 1: +20 N/A +100 N/A 2: N/A +75 3: +40 N/A : N/A +125 At the end of each level of play, you will see your point score. At the end of the game, you will see your total points score! Note: Mickey Mouse and the Pyramid of Peril is fun to play again and again try to beat your high score! This game is only available in the Palace. Getting the Most out of Your Typelandia Adventure To get the most out of your Typelandia Adventure and become a successful touch typist, here are a few tips and helpful hints. First, view the How to Type presentation in the Magic Shoppe. Starting out with the proper form and techniques will help you become the most proficient touch typist you can be. Next, select the most appropriate typing course for you, from the Suggested Typing Course to the Home Row course, all are designed to help you build essential keyboarding skills. Then, as you make your way through the adventure, follow your typing course and keep the following in mind... Practice, Practice, Practice! Not only does practice make perfect, but you ll reinforce your learning and build your skills, speed, and accuracy. Once you ve learned some keys...take a break! Visit the Academy or the Library to practice. Take breaks from your adventure often to practice and improve your skills. Type, Learn, Repeat. As keys are gradually added to your Lessons, you ll increase your dexterity, speed, and improve your accuracy. Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure has been developed with a wide variety of Lessons and Challenges so that each visit to Typelandia is a unique experience. You ll never get tired of coming back! Balancing Speed and Accuracy. To develop strong keystroking skills you ll have to trade off speed for accuracy or accuracy for speed. Both are important and you should alternate emphasis to ensure your typing success. There s no place like home... Remember to keep your fingers on the home row keys. Continuing your adventure allows you to reinforce correct fingerto-key placement and improve your typing skills. Go for the Goal! It is important that you set your Goal WPM (Word Per Minute) at or slightly higher than your current typing ability for the most enjoyment and education from Disney: Mickey s Typing Adventure. The games have been developed to work with the Goal WPM in the Settings screen to provide appropriate content and optimal level of motivation. Patience is a Virtue. You may be motivated to race to the Palace/Faire as quickly as you can, but remember accuracy is important, too. If your typing speed and accuracy skills are not well developed you won t be able to pass the last touch typist Challenge and break the final enchantment. Try to learn the keys gradually and in multiple sessions. Typelandia is a fun place, but don t let your typing session last too long or be too short. You don t want to tire your hands, but you also want to stay on Typelandia long enough to master some new skills. When you return to Typelandia you should review your previous Lessons as a warm up exercise in the Academy or take a Random Words lesson. Repeating Lessons and Challenges provides the repetition necessary to develop strong touch typing skills. In each area, try to achieve 90% accuracy or better and a speed of 15 WPM.
