1 Module 3c: Youth and climate change Games Games Sisters Mirzadi (l) and Rabia stand with their mother next to a water pump in a makeshift camp on the road to Benazirabad. Pakistan s southern Sindh province was hit hard by the monsoon spell that started on 09 August (Photo: IFRC/ PRCS / Olivier Matthys) Experience has shown the effectiveness of transmitting information about climate change risks through games and exercises. This is because they are based on participation, role-playing, decision-making and other forms of artistic expression. This type of learning, involves sensations, feelings, new behaviours and response to various stimuli through simulated actions. Below are a few games that are used by other National Societies to work with children and youth on climate change. Read the objective to find out which games might be most suitable for your group. We have to adapt to the changes to be able to cope with these changes. The climate is different in 30, 50 or even 100 years time. Young people write a story that takes place in the future. Main actor is an adolescent. The story can play anywhere all over the world (Latin America, Asia, or just around the corner). Authors should think about what the world will look like in the future. They have 30 minutes to write the story. After time is up, everybody reads their story out loud. The group discusses which parts of the stories might come true, what s realistic and how you could avoid negative changes happening. Stories could be collected, validated and published in a book. 12 Title: Terra Game upon request at Spanish Red Cross Spanish Red Cross in collaboration with the Centre for Cooperation in the Mediterranean Spanish, also available in English and French (currently working on an Arabic, German, Romanian and Portuguese version) 14+ years 2 hours and 45 minutes To reflect the influence of human activity on the general degradation of the planet. To make participants aware that the planet belongs to everyone and therefore we are all involved in the task of preserving and improving the environment. Games Module 3c: Youth and climate change 43

13 DESCRIPTION: The game consists of three phases: FIRST PHASE: Presentation of the game, setting up of groups, and assignment of roles to each group and its participants. Presentation of TERRA as an imaginary planet formed by five countries: Chaos, Volcano, Amazon, Bato, and Niobe. The role each player assumes is that of an inhabitant in a determined country, always acting with the relevant characteristics. Among members, positions can be elected (political representative, secretary, member for the ICES (International Commission for Environmental Surveillance). During the game, the positions will rotate, except for the member of the ICES, who will always maintain his/her post. SECOND PHASE: During this phase the activity of the dynamic is being developed. This phase consists of seven parts. Although each one of them has the same functioning, different topics related to the themed blocks will be developed. Each part will make reference to a different environmental problem of global importance and will always be introduced with an international statement. THIRD PHASE: Debate and final conclusions. Here some examples of the questions that can be used for starting the debate: What real countries could be compared to the fictional ones that appear in TERRA? Which countries are more guilty for the degradation of the environment, and why? General opinion of the participants on each statement. This game is best played in a classroom or lounge room big enough so that the placement of tables can be distributed as follows: A total of 14 tables 1 table for Chaos 2 tables for Volcano 3 tables for the Amazon 2 tables for Bato 3 tables for Niobe 1 table for the "International Meeting" A table for materials A table for the reading of statements (this table can be replaced for a lectern or simply nothing) chairs, according to the number of participants You need to give each country the number of materials necessary for the development of the game. There are certain materials that are common for everyone, but later each one of the countries will have specific materials. Material and explanation will be included in the Game Box (can be requested at mediterraneo@cruzroja.es). EXTRA INFORMATION: Ideal group: players (30 at the most).
