Struck on a blank of thin brass filled with cardboard ( Frappe cartonnee ). A Piece de Publicite, the subject of a specialized catalog by Roland Elie, and much collected in both the USA and France. Many of these shellcards were for brothels. Pieces are known from Argentina, Cuba, Hungary, New York, Denver and elsewhere. Lot Rouen, Chambre de Commerce. 5-Centimes. SILVER strike of the aluminum token. Matte Proof. Silver stamps (very small) on obverse and edge. Lot 201 Exactly as last, but the silver stamp on edge causes a bump on the rim. MB=$100 ($ ) 140+ pcs of the WW1-era Monnaies de Necesstie, rather average condition, usual base metals, none scarce, some from Algeria/Bone/Constantine/Oran Chambers of Commerce. An Evreux 2Franc, repressed due to similarity with the national issue, is in an old Hans Schulman envelope, marked R and $1.25; Hans was usually not so restrained in his pricing. 1

The planchet corresponds with the large Constitutional 2-Sols, and the rough edge indicates a cast planchet. Indeed, many of the Sols struck in Bell Metal have edges like this. Lot 206 L An3. It is unclear to this cataloger, if the center is an inserted silver disc, or if the planchet is solid, with the centers silver-coated. An intriguing piece, probably not so rare as the colossal price in the 1942 VGuilloteau catalog suggests, but an interesting comparison piece to the 1792 USA silver center cents (which now are million dollars coins). The wreath and centers incused, an early example of this minting technique. The coin is devoid of any relief, even at the rims. Curiously, most of these Banque du Peuple coins have been marked in ink. All pieces in the cataloger s personal collection of 1848 Revolt pieces also have this characteristic Lot Francs. VG3212. Distinctive due to laurel leaves extending above the head. Would likely slab as MS62. ISSUES OF THE BANQUE DU PEUPLE, 1848 An interesting series of pattern coins, always in copper, from the 1848 revolt. Note that these are not strictly government issues. These are much scarcer than the 1848 competition patterns for Republican coin designs. 3

4 Yes, it would be nice if they were gold, but this is still a remarkable set. The cataloger has seen a few such gilt strikes in Stack s auctions over the decades, but never a complete series. MB=$20 ($30-50) Made when the Paris Mint became fascinated by the coinage possibilities of maillechort (copper-nickel. From this year there are also well-known pattern coins for New Caledonia, a French colony and a source of nickel. This attractive, interesting pattern coin is usually seen in silver and sometimes bronze, but much less often in the nickel alloy which was its raison d etre. Lot A. 20-Centimes. Nickel-alloy pattern by L. Merley. 24mm. VG4453. Beautiful, rare and MS65+. MB=$60 ($ ) Lot E. 5-, 10-, 20-Francs. Uniface obverse and reverse pairs of the three denominations. Struck on Gilt Copper planchets. Nice Uncirculated. MB=$1000 ($ ) Designs as the regular issues. Pseudo-mintmark E (for Essai) under the bust on the 20-francs, and at bottom reverse on the 5-Francs and 10-Francs. VGuilloteau lists only a gold strike for the 20-Francs, but gilt pairs of the 10-Francs and 5-Francs are listed (#3619 & 3622). Each of the six pieces is struck in a collar, with the blanks gold-plated on the faces and edges. The edges are plain (smooth, or lisse ).The reverses are red copper and scratchy. The back of the 10-Francs reverse shows, in three lines, a crude thin, raised inscription: 10 FRA / CLICHÉ / 1855(.) The back of the reverse of the 5-Francs has seemingly similar markings, but these are illegible. 4

Presumed scarce or rare. MB=$30 ($50-up) Obv: female head. Rev: in center, in four lines: 1 / FRANC / BREVETE / SICALITE; legend: SOCIETE INDUSTRIELLE DU CELLULOID (star).attractive, and not previously known to this cataloger. SICALITE is a trade name for this plastic. This piece probably pre-dates by years the name change in 1928 from SIC to SNF (Societe Nobel France). Plastic coins had notable success as transportation tokens (USA, Britain, South Africa) but even as tokens there are few instances of French usage. 5

MB=$50 ($ ) Lot Political coin denominated UN ROCQUE. 27.5mm brass. Nice XF. Presumed scarce. MB=$10 ($20-up) Obv: a torch superimposed on a map of France, RECONCILIATION FRANCAISE Rev: UN / ROCQUE / in three lines, in center within a thin circle; legend TRAVAIL. FAMILLE. PATRIE; at bottom, the date Plain edge. Quite well-made. Rocque is not a French word, only a proper name. The Parti Social Francais, headed by Colonel de la Rocque in 1936, was a somewhat moderate right-wing political party and the first party on the right which achieved a mass following. (La Rocque later became a resistance figure.) Its three-word slogan is inoffensive in itself, but its newspeak intent seems clear, when contrasted with the French credo LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE. The PSF motto was adopted by Petain and appears on Vichy coins, making this piece, arguably, an important and successful pattern coin. Despite considerable experience with French tokens, this cataloger has not otherwise encountered this piece. Altho not listed in Gadoury, it fits well in the Monnaies de Tradition category which enriches French numismatics. The obverse with only the first two digits of the date, i.e. 18. On reverse, inscription, wreath, weight (12 GR) & diameter (30M/M.) There is a rather similar piece (VG5352) that is 31mm. 6

In 40 years of specialization in the Token field, this is as exceptional a love token as I have seen. MB=$1000 ($ ) On obverse, the periphery has been sectioned by simple lines, creating 6 sections.
