Although saddened by his departure, e, we are delighted that he has agreed to share his thoughts on some of the coins that have caught his eye over the last 12 years. In the 12 years since I was fi rst engulfed in numismatics at Downies, I ve witnessed many different coins featured in Money Magazine. To pick a favourite during those formative numismatic years is not easy. Is it the British 1847 Gothic Crown in my view, easily the most beautiful coin ever struck or is it the Hong Kong British Trade Dollar, mixing the best of Eastern and Western numismatic designs, as it does? Of course, in 12 years, I ve seen my fair share of modern issues as well, and this...is ultimately where I ve settled. In 2011, as part of its Great French Literature series, Monnaie de Paris issued a coin commemorating Albert Camus L Etranger. Translating, roughly, as The Outsider, the book has become a fi rm favourite of mine and, upon release of the coin, I was delighted to be able to combine my professional life with my own private interests through this silver legal tender issue. 8 CLASSIC COPPER A great, if somewhat underrated Australian rarity, the 1923 Halfpenny is undoubtedly the key to the Halfpenny Series and one of the most esteemed coins of the entire Australian Commonwealth Series across all denominations. Although records indicate that 1.113m halfpennies were struck in 1923, the actual mintage of the 1923 Halfpenny is believed to be approximately 15,000. Why is this so? Although the subject of some controversy, it is likely that the low mintage resulted from the faulty dies used in Three sets of dies were produced Underrated rarity! by the Melbourne Mint workshop one of which was rejected outright, with the other two both faulty. A vast percentage of 1923 Halfpennies bear die-cracks, and it is likely that the dies were used to strike only a limited number of coins in fulfi lment of the order of the Commonwealth Government. With the number in existence well below the tiny fi gure of 15,000, this celebrated copper rarity is indisputably scarce to rare across all grades. Missing from most collections as a result, there is no doubt that the 1923 Halfpenny is one of the most important acquisitions that the Australian coin collector can make. Also sought after by those keen to broaden their investment portfolios, any chance to secure this celebrated Australian copper rarity must be grasped with both hands. 9 RARITIES Rare opportunity! Undoubtedly Australia s highest profile rarity, pursued by those within and outside the field of numismatics, the 1930 Penny is known by approximately 1,500 examples. Above and beyond the unquestionable rarity, the magnetic attraction of the 1930 Penny can also be attributed to its Great Depression heritage. The worldwide defl ationary spiral saw Australia s economy shrink, and the Melbourne Mint was not required to strike many coins from 1929 to No pennies were struck in 1930 or so it was thought. It is now accepted that perhaps 3,000 were produced to test 1930-dated dies. Likely to have been released into circulation with the 1931 Penny issue, and seldom found in anything other than well-worn condition, this lauded Australian predecimal type exemplifi es that rarity rather than quality is the driving force behind long term price growth. Indeed, since 1997, the catalogue value of the 1930 Penny in Fine has rocketed from 8,750 to 25,000. As is usually the case, the two examples of the rare 1930 Penny we have in stock have been well circulated, with both coins graded Fine to good Fine with minor defects.
