WWI had a severe impact on the Empire s gold coin production the Royal Mint didn t begin striking sovereigns again until 1925 but Australian mints did produce sovereigns in limited numbers in the aftermath of the war. A mere 511,000 sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1923, for example, and with such a large if unknown number of 1920s sovereigns melted down and used to satisfy foreign debt, it s no shock that we rarely get the chance to offer the 1923M.
