Artificial Intelligence Robert Karapetyan, Benjamin Valadez, Gabriel Garcia, Jose Ambrosio, Ben Jair
Historical Context For thousands of years, philosophers have tried to understand how we think The role of AI professionals is two fold: - To understand reality - To build intelligent (understanding) entities
Decision Making Mechanism - Playing Chess - Proving Mathematical Theorems - Writing Poetry - Driving a Car on a Crowded Street - Diagnosing Diseases
AI Offers Some Fresh Ethical Concerns - beyond that of, say, building bridges that don t fall down - releasing a software system that doesn t crash - or, fixing a patient s broken leg following all the necessary ethical practices of medical profession
Primary Ethical Concerns People might lose their jobs to automation People might have too much (or too little) leisure time AI systems might be used toward undesirable ends The use of AI systems might result in a loss of accountability The success of AI might mean the end of the human race
Benjamin People might lose their jobs to automation: A reduction in low skill jobs will create new opportunities for people with those low level skills. New opportunities may include attaining a new skill.
Benjamin Reducing the cost of living Greatest expense of living? FOOD. A reduction in the cost of food will reduce the cost of living. Automated Farming, alongside other automated processes will reduce the Spread, a Japanese cost of food. Company
Benjamin Reducing the cost of living Another big expense of living? Shelter. Cheaper housing Apis Cor, A San will reduce the Francisco based cost of living. company.
Benjamin What will people do with their time? Creativity shall emerge. Learn/create a new skill that is not being taken by Autonomous systems. Learn how to make the autonomous systems(computer Science/Engineering).
Benjamin Automation can bring quicker advancement. Even the most under qualified people will be pushed to learn new skills.
AI systems might be used toward undesirable ends [Gabriel] Autonomous AI Systems 5,000 autonomous aircraft 12,000 autonomous ground vehicles in Iraq (Singer, 2009) no one would have moral objections to a soldier wanting to wear a helmet when being attacked by large, angry, axe-wielding enemies, and a teleoperated robot is like a very safe form of armor.
Robotic Weapons Human decision making Robots may end up making decisions At a larger scale, the possession of powerful robots (like the possession of sturdy helmets) may give a nation overconfidence, causing it to go to war more recklessly than necessary.
AI Could Lead to Loss of Privacy AI has the potential to mass-produce surveillance. Could lead to widespread wiretapping, and hence to a loss of civil liberties. Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy has said You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it. American scientist David Brin argues that loss of privacy is inevitable, and the way to combat the asymmetry of power of the state over the individual is to make the surveillance accessible to all citizens
The use of AI systems might result in a loss of accountability [Jose] AWS(Autonomous Weapons System) Constant criticism from scholars: In the event the AWS commits a war crime or violates human it is unclear who is held accountable for it.
The use of AI systems might result in a loss of accountability [Jose] Who can be held responsible? Designers, manufactures, lawmakers, owners and etc? The accountability can be spread so wide that in the end no one person truly holds the blame.
The use of AI systems might result in a loss of accountability [Jose] Even if an AI system is designed with a user override, one must consider the career incentive of a bureaucrat who will be personally blamed if the override goes wrong, and who would much prefer to blame the AI for any difficult decision with a negative outcome. - The Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence
The Success of AI End of Human Race

Apocalyptic AI Regarded as the incorporation of apocalyptic theology in books about robotics and artificial intelligence. Popular researchers: Robotics Hans Moravec Kevin Warwick AI: Marvin Minsky Ray Kurzweil Hugo de Garis
Apocalyptic AI Main Argument: Intelligent machines populate earth; and over time, will remain as the only form of intelligent life. Apocalypticism: Eg. The possibility that humans will upload their minds into machines or the possibility that robots can in fact become intelligent Dualism Sense of alienation Solution: new world without dualism Require to purify one s body into this new world Physical bodies Virtual bodies Physical space Cyberspace (ie, virtual world)
