Course Day/Time Instructor ENG 407 Language and Style for Writers Language and Style Core Requirement in the MAE and MAWP Lang/Lit/Teaching/Publishing Elective in the MAWP (If not used to fulfill Language and Style Core Requirement) Elective in the MAE and MAWP This course is a comprehensive examination of structural elements and stylistic devices that experienced writers use across a number of creative and professional genres. The course begins with the categories and conventions of Standard Edited English, including sentence constituents, sentence types, and phrases and phrase functions. Attention then turns to definitions and components of style, which include stress and intonation patterns of sentences, syntactic transformations that enhance emphasis and focus, diction choices, rhetorical punctuation, and the development of one s personal writing voice. By analyzing and mastering these structural dimensions of style in texts from a wide array of authors, students will acquire an understanding of how stylistic choices affect readers perceptions and responses as they, at the same time, come to a deeper understanding of their own writing styles. Assignments will include written analyses of style in fiction and nonfiction texts and problem sets involving editing and amending texts to improve, among other things, clarity, economy, coherence, and balance. The culminating project is a study detailing and critiquing the predominant stylistics features of a piece of literature nonfiction. Craig Sirles ENG 429 Topics in Renaissance Literature: Love & Desire in Renaissance Drama MAE: Renaissance Requirement; Elective Cross-class crushes, interracial obsessions, committed companions, hook-ups and same-sex sweethearts: love and desire in early modern drama is a many splendored thing. In this course, we ll look at Renaissance Drama through the lens of love and desire to consider changing norms of sex, marriage, desire and love in their cultural contexts as well as our own. Readings will include Shakespeare s Othello and The Merchant of Venice, Christopher Marlowe s Edward II, John Lyly s Gallathea, Ben Johnson s Bartholomew Fair, John Webster The Duchess of Malfi, and John Ford s Tis Pity She s a Whore. Special attention will be paid to the afterlife of these plays in films and performances. T 6:00-9:15 Francesca Royster ENG 439 Topics in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Literature: The Novel and the New World Richard Squibbs

2 England s adventures in colonizing the so-called New World territories of North America in the 17 th &18 th centuries coincided with the emergence of the novel as a distinctive form of modern prose fiction. As this new genre morphed into lengthy, often inwardly-directed narratives of protagonists struggling through moral and experiential development in everyday life (or the novel as we know it), English writers in particular found in colonial encounters with native peoples and foreign environments, and the opportunities the colonies afforded for individuals to start anew, fertile ground for exploring the possibilities (formal, thematic, and ideological) of narrating fictional lives. By pairing novels by Aphra Behn, Daniel Defoe, Edward Kimber, Unka Eliza Winkfield, and Charles Brockden Brown with critical/theoretical writings on the novel as-genre by Georg Lukács, Ian Watt, Nancy Armstrong, Northrop Frye and others, this course will pursue the myriad ways in which New World experiences shaped the novel in its moment of emergence, and vice versa. ENG 464 ENG 472 ENG 475 MAE: 18 th Century Requirement; Elective Studies in American Authors: Hawthorne and Poe This seminar will focus primarily on short stories written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe and will consider as well Poe s poetry and Hawthorne s novel The House of the Seven Gables. The readings of these two popular, yet challenging antebellum authors will be paired thematically. We will also consider their publication histories (in magazines and collected and published as books) and the history of publishing during the antebellum period as part of situating the texts within their broader historical contexts. Students will prepare in-class oral presentations on critical readings and develop a final paper project over the course of the term. MAE: 19 th Century Require ment; Elective Literary Theory This course will introduce you to some of the most important interpretative methods that have influenced literary study throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Together we will read about queer theory, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and Marxism, and develop a vocabulary for asking questions about the nature of literary study, reading, and interpretation. We will examine concepts of authorship & textuality, what it means to relate a text to a historical context, the slipperiness of language, and the ideological and aesthetic effects of works of art. MAE: Core Requirement Topics in Literature: Rewriting the Romance Rewriting the Romance As norms for courtship, sexual behavior, and gender identity shift, popular romance fiction shifts with them and as romantic possibilities proliferate, so to the subgenres and self-critical moves of this most popular of popular genres. This course will tease out the artistic, philosophical, and political complexities of some recent romance novels, with an eye to how they rewrite our sense of the past and how they adapt the enduring tropes and Marcy Dinius Bill Johnson Gonzalez Eric Selinger

3 ENG 477 conventions of the form to the evolving relationship-structures, sexual dynamics, and critiques of love that mark our contemporary moment. Our course will include a diverse array of heterosexual and LGBTQ romances, as well as supplementary readings about the genre and relevant theoretical works about romantic love. Please note that our texts may well be sexually or theologically explicit, and possibly both. Students uncomfortable with such material should keep this in mind when deciding whether to take the class. MAE: 20 th /21 st Century Requirement; Elective Topics in Publishing: American Literary Magazine IDEALISTS AND HAPPY FOOLS: THE AMERICAN LITERARY MAGAZINE T 6:00-9:15 Barrie Borich Hybrid Course: We will complete work on D2L and meet face-to-face on these dates: Jan 8, Jan 29, Feb 26. March 12. We will also have two Saturday morning off-campus field trips February dates TBD. There will always be idealists and happy fools, so there will always be literary magazines. Rob Spillman of Tin House This hybrid online and face-to-face course makes use of digital media, archival collections, and experiential editorial practice, to examine the American literary magazine, from inception to contemporary practice. We explore the missions, functions, styles, personalities, experiments, and aesthetics of select little magazines and literary journals published from the early 20th century to the present day, particularly those representative of great moments of change in both political and literary culture. Using digital archives, DePaul Special Collections, and field trips to the Newberry Library and the Read/Write library archives, class participants compare and contrast the ways literary journals develop in response to changing times, in keeping with innovations in literary form and in tandem with changes in publishing technologies. Students also deliberate over submissions and choose at least one creative work to publish in the national literary journal of the urban essay arts, SLAG GLASS CITY. The outcome is an in-depth understanding of the literary journal s relationship to editorial vision, book publishing, and individual author s careers. ENG 477 Topics in Publishing: Book Publicity/Big Shoulders Books A writer can spend years crafting a book to perfection. But once that book is sent out into the world, it takes on a life of its own. Will it thrive or be forgotten? A carefully thought-out marketing plan is essential to helping that book succeed. Using DePaul s Big Shoulders project Garcia Boy as a guide, students will discover what makes a book newsworthy. They ll learn how to recognize story angles, target audiences, observe and pitch media, create effective promotional materials, and produce an event, often collaborating with others, to maximize readership and impact for Sheryl Johnston

4 a book and its message. ENG 478 Topics in Teaching: Grammar for Teachers This course will provide an overview of traditional views of English grammar as well as insights provided by a more descriptive approach. We will then apply this knowledge to examples of published prose from various sources (i.e., both fiction and non-fiction). Students will thus develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of the English language and the inherent difficulties in explaining it. T 6:00-9:15 Robert Meyer Writing Workshop Topics: Novels II This course will focus on editing and revising the novel form, using essays and student work to demonstrate how fictional elements work together to create an organic whole. Students will discover how successful novelists shape their stories using point of view, form, tone, characterization, plot, narrative time, significant detail, and precise language, along with higher-form issues like counterpointed characterization, narrative structure, and pacing. These craft elements we will use as guidelines, not limitations, in the revising of our own novels. We will discuss student manuscripts in a space that encourages honest criticism, always balanced by respect for the writer. In class and during individual conferences, we will explore strategies for revision of each student s work. This is the second course of a two-course sequence. Any student who has a completed manuscript of at least 60,000 words can take Novels II without having first taken Novels I. Writing Workshop Topics: Writing Childhood In this cross-genre course, students will study works of fiction and nonfiction about youth and adolescence as a means to 1) explore childhood in their own prose, 2) understand what made them writers, and 3) focus on what sort of writers they want to become. Among the authors discussed will be George Saunders, Charles Baxter, Toni Morrison, Lucy Grealy, George Orwell, James Baldwin and Tobias Wolff. T 6:00-9:15 Rebecca Johns Trissler Miles Harvey Writing Workshop Topics: Poetry and the Work of Seeing We will use documentary and feature films (Leviathan, Samsara, Bad Writing, and Paterson), short poetry films, poetry about art, and study the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, James Wright, Franz Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks, Seamus Heaney, Jane Kenyon, Donald Hall, Joe Brainard, and Sharon Olds) to learn techniques for describing consciousness, the mind playing over the world of Chris Green

5 ENG 490/ JOUR 515 matter. You will make poetry art objects, a short poem-film, and complete a tenpoem portfolio. Writing for Magazines This course is an advanced immersion and writing workshop into the creative nonfiction forms of magazine writing. Students will analyze past and contemporary classics, generate ideas and research and write their own articles for a fast-changing medium, and hear from guest professionals. We treat magazine writing as an art form, every bit as creative as fiction and poetry. Ted Anton ENG 509 ENG 509 Internship Using both film and readings (Startup.com, Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads: Finding a Path to Your Perfect Career, and The Defining Decade: Why your twenties matter and how to make the most of them now), the class applies its lessons to your internship and your future career. You will also seek guidance from DePaul s Career Center, an English alum, and an interview with someone on your career path to explore what makes work meaningful and strategies for career success.
