1 2016 Fall Course Offerings O Connor Workshop KSU Th 2:15 5:10 pm ENG COURSE FULL Book 1 Wasserman Workshop UA T 5:20 7:50 pm ENG 330: COURSE FULL: A positive and inviting MFA workshop in fiction writing that gives exclusive attention to the creative work of students enrolled in the course. Students are provided a manuscript submission schedule that allows for flexible creative output. Working on a focused, specific project? Great! We re excited to see what you re developing. Want to be more exploratory and get some feedback on self-contained short stories or maybe interlinked, connected short fiction, maybe even an idea for the opening of a novel? That s great, too! You will not be creatively constricted in this workshop. Instead, you will be encouraged to take your fiction writing where the creative impulse leads you over the semester. The course includes some minor exposure to fiction writing theory that is covered in short class discussions that will directly assist students with crafting their own original fiction. In addition, students will respond critically and constructively to the work of their peers in building an inspiring, semester-long creative classroom community. Robert Miltner C&T KSU W 5:30 8:15 pm ENG CRN: COURSE FULL Brief Fictions: Since Donald Barthelme s 1988 literary essay, Minimalist Spills Bean, flash fiction has intrigued and attracted writers. This class will review the historical development of brief fictions; explore the distinctions and relationships between varied forms of brief fiction: nano fiction, micro fiction, flash fiction, and flash fiction sequences; and examine the relationship between brief fiction the comparable genres of narrative prose poetry and brief nonfiction. Readings, essays, creative work. O Connor Workshop KSU W 2:15 5:10 pm ENG CRN: 21404
2 2016 Fall Course Offerings Todd C&T CSU M 6:00 8:50 pm ENG 612 Documentary Playwriting with David Todd: Emily Mann s Execution of Justice. Moises Kaufman s The Laramie Project. Elevator Repair Service s Arguendo. Doug Wright s I Am My Own Wife. Each of these works for the stage draws from interviews, found text, diaries, public records, and other original sources in the creation of what may loosely be called documentary plays. In this course, we ll spend some time examining the strategies used in these and other samples, then focus on creating our own works in this rich and increasingly relevant mode. Participants may work with verbatim material, conduct their own interviews, delve into archives, appropriate government documents, borrow transcripts, or take other approaches in generating their projects. Original pieces may be based on actual events or apply documentary material in new or imagined scenarios. (To save a seat, davidxtodd@ gmail.com) Biddinger Workshop UA Th 5:10 7:50 pm ENG 3300: COURSE FULL: Poetry will focus almost exclusively on student writing, with a significant amount of time dedicated to workshopping. This is a friendly and productive workshop that welcomes both poetry concentrators and students taking the course to fulfill an out of genre requirement. The semester will culminate with each student creating a chapbook of original work. Pagel C&T CSU W 6:00 8:50 pm ENG COURSE FULL Gothic Philosopy: Visions, Elegies, Wars, and Underworlds: I would like/ to be used for/ years after/ my death. Eileen Myles I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,/ If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles. Walt Whitman How might a poet act as a ghost within their work, haunting the voice that inhabits it? Of what use are unnerving, unearthly images? What makes poetry alien, apparitional, anxious, or dangerous? In this class we will explore visions, catastrophes, séances, war, illness, near-death experiences, and writing through the anthroposcene. We will read work by such powerfully haunted authors as CA Conrad, Lucas de Lima, Lo Kwa Mei-en, Claudia Rankine, M. NourbeSe Philip, Joyelle McSweeney, Zach Savich, Robyn Schiff, and Nikki Wallschlaeger. We will converse with the dead, past and future.

Students will make these arrangements independently or with the help of their campus coordinator, ideally, prior to the beginning of the semester. The course will meet four days as a whole class throughout the semester, on Saturdays at YSU from 11-2, during which professionalization seminars will be held alongside conferencing in regard to student internships. Subjects of seminars include Creative Writing Pedagogy Building Literary Community Online The Business of Writing: Agents and Publishing Process Robinson-Kent Internship KSU M 5:30 8:15 pm ENG CRN: Teaching Creative Writing in the Community: This course will prepare students to apply their knowledge of creative writing and participate in a community-based teaching residency. We will also study creative writing pedagogy currently used in the community. Field experience in schools, hospitals, shelters, community centers, senior centers, and correctional facilities, will be applied through a teaching residency. Students will be expected to teach in the community a minimum of 1 hour a week for ten weeks at a location agreed upon by the student and instructor.
4 Literature 2016 Fall Course Offerings All Genres Brady C&T YSU T 5:10 7:50 pm ENG 6968 CRN: Literary Publishing: This all-genre craft and theory course will explore the wide and challenging world of literary publishing. THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON Miller UA W 5:20 7:50 pm 3300: Scholarly Editing and Publishing: Students will collaborate with one another and the professor to create a collection of nineteenth-century American literature. Each student will contribute a substantial critical commentary. Topics include the selection of texts, textual and scholarly editing, and the state and conventions of scholarly publishing. Pope UA W 5:20 7:50 pm 3300: Postwar Voices: O Connor & Malamud: After WWII it was still possible to make money selling stories to magazines; at the same time, writers were forgoing of the short story a new art form. Key collections reshaped the nature and aim of short fiction, foremost among them, O Connor s A Good Man Is Hard to Find, and Malamud s The Majic Barrel, Salinger s Nine Stories, Baldwin s Going to Meet the Man, and Updikes Pigeon Feathers. Though diverse, these writers shared something of a common visions; special attention to O Connor and Malamud. Expect a combination of papers to equal twenty pages.

While analyzing representative theorists and critics, members of this seminar will find ways to use concepts of literary theory in their own writing. YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY Tingley YSU Th 5:10 7:50 pm ENG th Century American Studies Benton YSU M 5:10 7:50 pm ENG 6918 Studies in Children s Literature Reese YSU W 5:10 7:50 pm ENG th Century British Studies: 4 Contemporary Poets: In this course we ll focus on four contemporary poets with an eye toward creating some publishable critical work a print or online article, a conference presentation, an extended review, e.g. To that end, distinguished writers have been chosen to whom less critical attention has been paid than in the case of more familiar names (like Larkin or Hughes); these writers were also chosen because they are accessible, lively, fun to read, and have a sense of humor. They are: Charles Tomlinson, Tony Harrison, Carl Ann Duffy (the current Poet Laureate), and Alice Oswald. These writers will be read in the context of British poetry after WWII, and with a brief consideration of other contemporary poets whose work could equally well have served the purposes of a course like this.
