SAY HELLO! Terri I am a Civil Engineer. I design and build bridges. Aisha I m a Powergrid Engineer. I look after electricity cables, poles and substations. Sarah-Louise Sarah I m a Design Engineer. I work out and design switches that drivers use to control cars. I am a Mechanical Engineer. I work out what equipment we need to make big things like gates and bridges move. Amanda I am an Aeronautical Engineer. I fix and maintain aeroplanes so they are safe to fly. Nancy I m a Chemical Engineer. I solve problems at a factory that mixes and melts metal.
Spot the difference Sarah-Louise is testing the car part that she designed. There are 10 differences between these two pictures. Can you spot them? Sarah-Louise works for a company that designs and makes switches, buttons and controls for cars like window openers and gear boxes. She is part of a team of people and is very good at measuring things! Bzzzzzzzz Welcome! Knock knock! Who s there? Carl Carl who? Carl get you there faster than a bike! Give me a brake, that s wheely funny! 1 Answers are on page 16
Match the engineers at work and play Engineers are all different. And like everyone else, they like doing all sorts of different things. At work A B C D E 2 F
At play A C B D Answers on page 16 E F 3 Over five million people work as engineers in the UK but loads more are needed! The word engineer comes from the Latin word meaning cleverness.
Which cable is Aisha fixing? A B C Electricity cables need replacing if they are very old or need to be bigger for heavier currents. 4
The tallest electricity pylon in the world is the Yangtze River powerline crossing in China. It s 270 metres high the equivalent of a 90 story skyscraper! UnBEElievable. Aisha works in Sheffield looking after the cables that bring electricity from power stations into houses, shops, factories, schools in fact, everywhere! Answers on page 16 ANSWER = 5
Nancy has written 16 engineering words on her noticeboard. Can you find them? (they can be straight across, up and down, diagonal or back to front) CAD Communication Computer Creative Design Engineer Experiment Explore Problem Solving Spanner Weight Tools How Things Work Machines Measure Power Word search Have you heard the one about the chemist who was reading a book about helium? She just couldn t put it down! Nancy works in a foundry a big factory that melts and makes metal - outside Sheffield. Her job is checking that the chemical processes are working well, so she works with a team of people and she needs to be very organised. 6 Answers on page 16
Doing what I want what I really, really want When I was a baby I loved building with my bricks and hated having to stop. Time for bed When I got bigger I liked making dens... Make sure you tidy up What s she saying Teddy?...and on holiday I built sandcastles with Need any moats and turrets and things. help? Make your own Dad! At nursery I loved playing with the trucks... What do want to be when you re grown up?...but I was still always given dolls for Christmas. A fireman I want to make roads and bridges Superman A princess Thank you Granny
School was fun with lots of things to do and lots of new friends to make. I learnt to read and do sums....but my granny said... Girls don t need to learn maths! Urgh that s smelly What you doing that for? When I got to secondary school I loved doing experiments. You re going to get all dirty Not everyone liked the things I did, and that was hard sometimes... You re soooo boring Nerd I loved learning how tunnels were built....but me and my friends had lots of good times too.
Some people made me feel that I couldn t or shouldn t do what I wanted to... Girls can t do science It s men s work It s not very ladylike Preposterous! Don t you want to be pretty? My friend s grandad My life is ruined the man next door the woman in the supermarket Mr Miller at school I was fed up and didn t know what to do next and that girl in my class Do you remember my friend Mandy the electrician? Let s talk to her. What can we do? When my mum s friend came round I told her about my problems and she burst out laughing. Can girls be engineers? Of course they can! If you want to be an engineer be an engineer. All you need to decide is what kind of engineering you would like to do. I was so happy! I asked teachers, my family and friends for advice and all of a sudden I knew what I wanted... I want to be a civil engineer. I have always wanted to build bridges, tunnels and towers.
You re really good at all this I just love it I passed all the tests and exams I needed, and did work experience with a building company......i went to college, and then I got a job and worked my way up. Yes Boss She s a natural A very impressive young woman She s amazing We re so proud of her You show them girl Now I ve won a prize for doing exactly what I always wanted to do... to be a Civil Engineer. Don t let anyone put you off from going as far as you can in your life.
Amanda fixes planes to keep them safe. She needs to be good at solving problems for her job. Amanda is solving this number puzzle using logic. Every row, every column and every minigrid contains the numbers 1-6. Don t guess! You can work it out. Sudoku number puzzle There are 4,000 women who fly planes for a living in the world. Hive Five! Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in She disappeared five years later trying to fly all the way around the earth. Nobody knows why or where Answers on page 16 11
Match the pictures Sarah is out with her team surveying the canal lock that they are going to upgrade. Can you match all the squares here with where they are on this picture. Locks on canals are a brilliant invention! If a boat needs to go up or down hill, then people steer them into the lock, shut the gates, and use the machinery to let the water go up or down. It s like a giant watery staircase. Answers on page 16 12
Knock knock! Who s there? Canoe Canoe who? Canoe come out and play? 13
Join the dots to reveal what it is -Doctor, doctor, I feel like I m a bridge! -What s come over you? -Oh, two cars, a big lorry and a bus! Terri is looking at the plans and designs that she made for her latest project! A woman was in charge of engineering one of America s most famous bridges. Way back in 1883, Emily Roebling made sure that building of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York was completed. Did you know that one of the most famous bridges in London was actually built by women?! Waterloo Bridge is often called The Ladies Bridge because of all the women who helped build it in
