Afrofuturism in Black Panther: STEM Focused Teacher Guide STEM Based Curriculum for Middle and High School Students By: The Woke STEM Teacher

Introductory Lesson: Afrofuturism Materials -Cell phone or tablet device with access to YouTube - PepperGram (can be ordered online at /peppergram-projector-forphone/ for $15 per kit) - Projector for animated version of Tupac hologram and Black Panther hologram

What Is Afrofuturism? Afrofuturism is a term coined by Mark Dery defined as a literary and cultural aesthetic that combines science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity, and magic realism. Afrofuturism focuses on what it means to be Black in the future. 1. In Black Panther, what are some examples of Afrofuturism? Answers may vary 2. What technological advances were examples of Afrofuturism? Answers may vary

Lesson 1: Holograms Materials -Cell phone or tablet device with access to YouTube - PepperGram (can be ordered online at /peppergram-projector-forphone/ for $15 per kit) - Projector for animated version of Tupac hologram and Black Panther hologram

Name: Date: Hologram Overview 1. What do you think a hologram is? Answers may vary 2. How do holograms work? Answers may vary 3. How is a hologram different from a normal projection, similar to a classroom projector? Answers may vary

What Is A Hologram? A hologram is a 3 - D image of an object. A hologram is created by the interference of a light at an object from different angles. The recorded size and shape of the object produces a holographic image. Did You Know? In the movie Black Panther, Shuri s lab has holographic displays, including the vehicles used remotely. The characters also use holograms to make phone calls similar to Facetime. The holograms appear through their wearable technology, inspired by African jewelry and called Kimoyo beads.

Real World Holograms In 2012, guests at Coachella, a music festival, were surprised to see the deceased rap artist Tupac perform onstage. Various individuals called the digitized performance a hologram, but was it really a hologram? If you have access to a projector, you can show students a video clip of the Tupac hologram. Pepper s Ghost is an optical illusion that creates a ghostly scene, created by scientist John Henry Pepper. The illusion can be achieved by using the Law of Reflection. Source: Pepper s Ghost

Law of Reflection Have you noticed that you look different in the mirror than when looking at a picture of yourself? This is because of reflection. When viewing yourself in the mirror, you are seeing a reflection of yourself. A reflection is when light energy bounces onto and off of the mirror surface. We can measure the angle of light moving toward the mirror called the angle of incidence and the angle of light after it has bounced on the mirror called the angle of reflection. The Law of Reflection states that these two measured angles are the same measurement, no matter where the light source comes from. Source:

Pepper s Ghost and the Law of Reflection The original Pepper s Ghost involves placing a large piece of glass (or plexiglass) at an angle between a well-lit room and a dark room. When the dark room is slightly lit and the well-lit room is dimmed, an apparition from the dark room appears to any viewers. It appears as a ghostlike image.

PepperGram Activity For the PepperGram activity each student (or groups of students) will need the following materials: A PepperGram Kit A cell phone or tablet with Youtube access

Lab Activity: PepperGram or Hologram? 1. From learning about the Law of Reflection, where should you look for the best view of the PepperGram? Why? The best view of the Peppergramis to view it from eye level. The reflected light rays are moving in one direction, horizontally from side to side, so the PepperGram must be viewed from a horizontal level rather than vertically. 2. Pause the video. Slowly move around the PepperGram. What do you notice about the image? As you move around the PepperGram, you see the same image all around. There is no back side of the image. 3. What happens to the image when you turn off the phone screen? When you turn the phone screen off the image disappears. 4. Is our PepperGram a hologram? Why or why not 1. Our PepperGram does not have a back side to the image, thus it is not 3-D like holograms would be. 2. You cannot turn off the reflection of a hologram as you did with your screen. 5. Bonus: If you were to walk around from the front of the Okoye hologram in Black Panther to the back, what would happen to the image? If you recall in the movie, Okoye s hologram showed the front AND back of her. If you walk around to the back of her hologram, you will see the back of her body.
