2 We are delighted to present our Back to School catalogue, which includes a fantastic array of contemporary and classic titles perfect for primary and secondary schools. With special attention paid to brand-new translations from various European languages, we are committed to making timeless international masterpieces available to young English readers. Together with Hay Festival, we launched two new anthologies earlier this year: Quest (p. 12) and Odyssey (p. 21), comprising original stories from the Aarhus 39, the result of an ambitious pan-european project with the European Capital of Culture, Aarhus, showcasing 39 of the best children s and YA writers under 40 from across Europe. Themed around journeys, and edited by Daniel Hahn, Quest: Stories of Journeys from Around Europe from the Aarhus 39 (9 11) and Odyssey: Stories of Journeys from Around Europe from the Aarhus 39 (YA) encourage readers to experience lives lived in other countries, and to broaden their horizons. The stories are coupled with specially commissioned illustrations from leading European artists, including Axel Scheffler, Chris Riddell, Anna Höglund and Britta Teckentrup. Inspired by this project, we are running a writing competition open to all primary schools and we will select a minimum of ten stories to be published in a special collection. We are looking forward to reading your pupils amazing stories. For more information, please see p. 15. 11 SECONDARY-SCHOOL AGE ALMA JUNIOR 20 We are delighted to offer secondary-school students the opportunity to read stories from around Europe, covering a wide range of themes relevant to teenagers today. As Daniel Hahn, the editor of Odyssey, says: Stories make us understand how people might be different, but also how we are all the same. As readers, we take characters who seem so very unlike us (people in other places or times, with wildly different lives, even with magical powers) and find ways of connecting to them. I can t think of anything that has the power to make that connection quite like a great work of fiction. Reading may feel like a quiet, private act, a way of isolating yourself from the world; but surrendering to a good story is also the opposite of isolation. It s a way of reaching out, of communicating, silently, through our powers of imagination and empathy. To celebrate the launch of this anthology, The National Literacy Trust have produced a cross-curricular resource, intended to support educators working with young people to engage with the stories in a critical way and to explore the themes addressed in the stories. You can download the PDF from our website at the address below. We would also like to bring to your attention our series of high-quality affordable classics: our collection includes a variety of titles from well-known titles like Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, to some lesser-known masterpieces such as The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle, and a first-time translation into English of Arsène Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes by Maurice Leblanc, which pits the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin against Sherlock Holmes, the world s most famous detective. Most of the books in our list contain extra material to guide students in their reading, together with an extra section of photographs to put the author and work into context. almabooks.com/odyssey-classroom-resource Odyssey Stories of Journeys from Around Europe from the Aarhus 39 Odyssey, a volume of twenty-one stories aimed at young adults, offers a variety of takes on the theme of travelling at times funny and playful, at others dramatic and poignant covering a wide range of subjects relevant to teenagers across Europe such as coming of age, sexuality, migration, identity and displacement. Madame Tussaud s Apprentice Kathleen Benner Duble Célie is a talented young artist who, along with her partner Algernon, resorts to petty thieving on the streets of Paris to survive. It is 1789: rumours of rebellion against the monarchy are starting to spread, and the two of them get involved in the idealistic revolutionary fervour. Suddenly Célie finds herself whisked away from the tumult of Paris to the safety and opulence of Versailles.
