Yardley and the Birth of American Codebreaking, Yale, Herbert Yardley is probably the most fascinating character in cryptology, and cryptology has had many fascinating characters. It would have been a good text for a cryptology course in It shows the state of cryptology just after Yardley. Ramsay, David, Blinker Hall Spymaster: The Man Who Brought America into World War I, Spellmount, Hall used the Zimmerman telegram to bring the United States into World War I.

See Friedman and Mendelsohn above. Yardley, Herbert O., The American Black Chamber, Aegean Park Press, A shock when it was first published. It reveals US codebreaking efforts during World War I and the naval conference that followed the war. World War II WWII: Alan Turing Alan Turing ( ) was one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century and one of the leading codebreakers at Bletchley Park. He is often described as the father of computer science. Turing was an interesting personality. The end of his life was tragic. Turing was gay at a time when being gay in Britain was a criminal offense. Turing was arrested and underwent hormone treatments to cure him. He lost his security clearance and, hence, access to even his own World War II work. He could no longer travel to the United States because the US did not permit gays to enter the country. Turing (probably) committed suicide by eating an apple dipped in cyanide he had been fascinated by Snow White since he was a child. Here are three biographies about Turing: Hodges, Andrew, Alan Turing: The Enigma, Vintage, The definitive biography of Turing, one of the leaders at Bletchley Park. Quite long. Whitmore, Hugh, Breaking the Code, Samuel French, A play about Alan Turing breaking German codes and the codes of society. There is a DVD of the play in which Derek Jacobi plays Turing.
